General Discussion / Emoticons?

Is it just me, or have the emoticons disappeared?

I've been busy making mostly motorcycle gear and doing leatherwork lately.  Just looking at some posts and thought I'd share a seat I just finished.  This is only the third truck seat I've done.  Nothing fancy, but he likes it better than sitting in a hole!

I haven't been posting as frequently over here because I've been teaching myself to do leatherwork so I've been spending most of my time on the Leatherworker.net forum.

There's been some recent development on a new upgrade for the digital servo motors.  The one on my Highlead has a knob for adjusting speed, but the digital ones have an L.E.D. readout with touch buttons to move up or down in speed.

They also have a laser beam inside that is used to control the speed of sewing when you press on your foot pedal.  It seems that they were VERY sensitive with very little travel in the pedal to go from stop to wide a$$ open!

If anyone has one of these new motors, it's worth the time to check out this thread and video about the upgrade/modification.

I just got a new Cobra Class 4 yesterday and the speed control is absolutely FANTASTIC!  8)

Here's the links to the thread and video:

I hope this helps if you have one of the new digital brushless servos.  Mine is working soooo good, I may buy one for my Highlead....and I'm not having any problems with it!

I know I've read about the marine people having problems with water leaking through seams.  I just got an email from Sailrite about a video they uploaded on YouTube.  I just watched it and it looks like it might help you marine people out.  ;D

Thanks to Peppy, I deleted a spammer's account while they were actually online in the act of spamming!

Bet they were surprised......unless it was just one of those automatic bots!

General Discussion / Finished my first door panels today.
February 26, 2012, 10:12:56 pm
One of our friends sons has a little Mazda pickup that he's been working on fixing up.  He picked up some door panels at the junk yard, so I told him I would cover them for him.  Figured it help him out and give me a chance to practice.  Wanted to do something a little different for him, but not too complicated.

I want to make some tool rolls and other HEAVY weight gear.  I'm looking for some brown canvass duck like Carhartt coats are made from.

Anyone have a source for SS Hog Rings?

I am looking for a supplier of a marine vinyl that has a disstressed leather look.  If you've ever seen the bomber jackets that have the distressed look, that's what I'm looking for.

Here's a sample of something similar to what I'm talking about.

I thought I had a sample book with it in it, but I can't find it now.  If anyone knows of a supplier with this, Please let me know.

I stumbled across this site quite a while back when I was searching for info on building a small sneak boat to use in small ponds and creeks.

This is a FAR cry from what I was searching for, but I found this project very interesting.  This guy does some amazing woodworking.  Actually, he does a lot of amazing work, including some of his upholstery work too.

Here's a link to his site.  He has documented his progress in great detail and I thought the members on this forum would appreciate his attention to the smallest details.

For the best experience, start at the beginning rather than skipping around.

Hope you enjoy his work as much as I do.  BTW, you can sign up to get periodic email updates from him.  I usually receive one every 3-6 months, so you're not bombarded with emails.

ENJOY!

I just wanted to let everyone know about a mistake that was made RIGHT by www.fabricsupply.com.

First off, let me say that I have ordered from them in the past and received fast service and GREAT prices!  Never had any problems.  :D

I recently ordered 30 yards of heavy tonneau material that was on sale for $3.95/yard.  This is my second order of this material.  Great material at an even better price!  I still had a little left, but knew I needed to re-order to finish up a couple of jobs that I had started but not finished yet.

When the material came in, I immediately noticed that it was a different grain pattern from my last order. :o  I sent them an email and asked what they could do to fix it.

They said that there was a mistake in pulling the wrong material, and that they would give me a 25% refund on the material if I could use it.  That was great, but I still needed to get another 30 yards of material in the correct grain pattern.  I told them I would keep the material, but asked if they would be willing to ship out the new roll with free shipping.

I got a reply back that they're shipping out another roll with the 25% credit on the first roll with free shipping on the second roll, no questions asked! ;) ;D :D  And even included the tracking number!

You can't ask for better support than that!

We all make mistakes in our business, but it sure is nice when a company bends over backwards to make it right!  I know we have other suppliers on this forum that stand behind their products and services, and I just wanted to let everyone know how satisfied I've been with www.fabricsupply.com  It helps us all out when we let each other know when we have problems, but it also helps to know there's good companies out there too.

I highly recommend that you check them out.  I'm on their mailing list and get a sales flyer monthly, with great deals.

THANKS TAMMY and FABRIC SUPPLY!  800-645-9998

If you have a company that's treated you right, tell us about it!

Sailrite pushes their http://www.sailrite.com/Soapstone-Marking-Pencil-White for marking on fabric.  I've seen it in several of their videos.  So I bought a couple of them and so far I like it.  The retail price is $5.10.  Round marker with NO refill.

Good ole Harbor Freight has a 4 Piece Soapstone Marker Set for $3.99.  I got one on sale that was cheaper than that, but don't remember the exact price.  It comes with a round marker and a refill plus a rectangle marker and refill.
http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece-soapstone-marker-set-46051.html

I just checked, and the Harbor freight marker is on back order, but you may pick one up at your local store.  I had bought mine for welding use and never thought about using it for fabric.  Guess what, it works great too and it's cheaper.

Just wanted to share this with all of my buddies on the forum.  I know we've talked about markers before and I don't think soapstone ever came up.  Doesn't work too good on vinyl, but I've still got my silver marking pens for that and they work awesome!

Hope this helps someone out!

I just saw a video that Sailrite has on YouTube where they use HH66 to seal a seam and make it waterproof.  They're doing it on a vinyl coated truck tarp type material, but I wonder wouldn't it work on canvas or sunbrella type material too??

Watch the video and tll me what you think.  I know several of you have had problems in the past with sunbrella boat covers leaking.  Maybe this is the answer?

Hope it helps someone. ;D

General Discussion / Need some boat seat advice??
March 12, 2011, 08:24:29 am
Hey guys, and gals!  I need some guidance on pricing a boat seat job.  There are two single bucket seats, one single low back seat, and a couple of pedestal seats that I forgot to take pictures of.  I have absolutely no idea of how much to charge for this job since it's my first boat.

Just recovering all the seats back to original is the plan.  The guy had his driver seat blow out while towing it down the road and scuffed it up pretty good.  He originally talked to me about just replacing the wooden bottom that had rotted and was the cause of it blowing out.  Now he's looking at recovering everything so it'll match!

I want to give him a price for just the one driver seat, then a price for the whole job.  I know prices vary by region, but I'd appreciate some advice so I have a starting point.  I have 2 local shops that I might be able t o get a quote from but I haven't contacted them yet.  I just went and looked at the job this morning, so nobody will be open till Monday.

One other thing, any recommendations on vinyl that would work good in this application?  Anybody have any favorites in a mid range price that will compare to the original material?

Here's some pics.

The first pics are the seat that blew out.

This is what's left of the 1/2" plywood base.  It also had vinyl covering it.

The other seats.  In the first picture you can see one of the pedestal seats turned upside down behind the built in seats.  There are two of them and I think they had a bottom with a flip up separate back.  I'll have to go and have another look to be sure.

Here's a picture of my first "Paying" motorcycle seat...only my second total, the first one I did was for me.  I'm aspiring to Saddleman's French seams! :D  Course now that he's got his dual needle fancy machine, that'll be hard to do.  Let me know what you think.

This is off of a sport bike that a guy at work painted.  They wanted a bike with wood look.  The bike looked pretty good, but the paint on the seat didn't last long.

The before and after.

General Discussion / 1996 GMC Z71 Seat Question??? HELP!
February 20, 2011, 08:23:34 pm
My drivers side seat on my truck will not stay latched back in the normal seating position.  The release handle on the side still feels springy, like it's working properly, but it just springs forward ALL THE TIME!

When I get in the truck, I have to put something behind the seat to keep it from laying all the way back flat when I lean back on it.  Basically it just moves freely back and forth, but the spring holds it in the forward position until I lean back on it!

Anyone have any ideas on what to look for to fix it?  I was hoping not to take it completely out, but I may have no choice if you guys can't give  me some ideas.

BTW, it's bucket seats with a flip down armrest on the right side.  Just the standard seat.

I just bought an Engel Hot Knife and was thinking about buying the cutting foot for it.  Is it better to use the cutting foot or put a piece of formica on top of my table to cut on?

I also need two bulbs for it.  Does anyone know if they can be bought locally at somewhere like an auto parts store, or if I have to order them from a Engel wholesaler?

Thanks!
