Ok, all you car guys (I am an old-timer on this board - ask Doyle - but I do furniture, so I haven't posted much lately.)   I have been asked to replace the velcro on a Truxedo lo pro tonneau.  anyone know where I can get it?  Apparently it is specialized to be stiff....

I (very nicely, with a sweet smile) suggest that they get additional quotes.  I do not give discounts, and it's cash or check upon delivery, no exceptions.  Unfortunately, I have gotten very good at the smile sweetly routine! ::)

Doyle, and Chris - there is one major difference between auto mechanics and upholsterers:  most -people need their cars, and are required to have them inspected.  People don't "need" their furniture, or even their marine work.  So, many consider us a luxury, especially in this economy.  (And the younger crowd would just as soon toss and buy new cheap crap!) 

That said, how would you go about marketing a valuable, but not necessary business?

Carol, I am one of the old old-timers here, and I have done both upholstery and seatweaving (cane, rush, etc.) for over 30 years.  There is a demand for hand caning, because there are so few of us who do it.  Google the Wickerwoman website - a few years ago, I put my name on her site, and have had people bring me chairs from Manhattan!  (I am 90 miles north!)

If you are looking to find a substitute for horsehair, for, say, antique work, Albany Foam has a synthetic version much like fine curled fishline.  It works up much like the natural product.  (Great for folks who want their antiques done traditionally, but hypo-allergenically, but it's not exactly "green")

Kim Buckminster of Buckminster Upholstery actually has a Nauga!  I  must assume that it had been caught and stuffed after its' demise... ::)

I have found put (the hard way, of course!) that both sharpies and ball point pens will bleed through vinyl (except black, of course)!  I use a very soft lead pencil on the wrong side of vinyl, with no problems!

We "get" to take the turkey to the family feast tomorrow, so we put it on the barbecue today.  Wonderful smoked flavor!  Grateful that I am still able to do that!  Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm with Paul:  it depends.  I usually call people by their first name (I think I'm the oldest one on the board, so most folks are fine with it.)  Certain folks that I think of as "courtly", I refer to by their title.

We were told to evacuate Long Beach Island yesterday.  (Sat on the beach through the earthquake - felt like a bumpy plane ride).  We left early enough to avoid the major traffic, and got home to the Hudson Valley in record time.  Now we are all battened down, shop (fortunately, for once) is on the 2nd floor, lawn furniture secure, generator primed and ready (DON'T want to lose the sump pump!) and we are awaiting the deluge.  We are about 70 miles north of NYC and are supposedly on the edge of the hurricane.  We'll see....
