General Discussion / Re: Staining Furniture Cane
February 28, 2011, 02:08:44 pm
Hey. Doyle,  I do a lot of caning, and frequently have to stain the cane to match the frame.  As you noticed, the cane and frame were sprayed with lacquer stain all at once at the factory, which is why they all matched when new.   I use Behlen spray lacquer, and less successfully, an oil-based stain on back (which absorbs well) and front (which doesn't).  I have had the most success with the spray.  I frequently mask off the wood if it is in good shape, and don't bother with the clear sealer.   Get on The Wicker Woman website, for all kinds of advice.

I have an old pair of fingerless sailing gloves.   The fingers tend to be a little longer, which is great for tying springs

I use double welt cord and a double welt foot, and make two passes, pulling the second pass tight.

I follow Joy's recommendation (also recommended by the British upholsters) for
washing it in the washing machine.  works like a charm.  If anyone needs  a supplier, Albany
Foam sells it.

Hey, looks a lot like my shop! ;D ;D  I have two 4 x 8 sheets of plywood on braced 2 x 4 legs butted up against each other.  gives me an 8 x 8 surface for cutting.  Upholstery supply roll goods (decking, burlap, muslin, etc.) are mounted on closet rods attached to one wall and a couple of vertical 2 x 4's.  machines are in front of South-facing windows, and the thread is on shelves set between the 2 x 6 studs.  Bobbins, needles, etc. are in a rolling cart that lives between the 2 machines.  I do mainly furniture, which sits on sawhorses in the middle of the room.  Tools are in a mechanic's rolling tool cart against one wall.  Once in awhile, I can even see the floor! ;D

Chris,
Go easy on those who feel that they have nothing to live for.   Having been suicidal, I know how easy it becomes to just stop fighting and  end it all.  There are as many reasons as there are suicides, and not all can be prevented.   I am very glad that you have found the cause of your suicidal thoughts, and that you have an active support system in your wife and doctors.  Not everyone is so lucky.

General Discussion / Re: Cushion migration
October 18, 2010, 02:41:35 pm
many of the older high-end pieces had  strips with a ring on them sewn into the side boxing of the cushion.  This attached to a hook on a piece of elastic stapled to the back of the side rail (or, in the case of the middle cushion, the back rail) before attaching the outside arms and back.
