General Discussion / Old singer
August 13, 2015, 06:48:28 pm
Anyone ever heard of a Singer Model 1688? It was patented in 1890s
It was used by an Upholsterer in the 1930s and beyond.

July 05, 2015, 07:03:34 pm
I've been reading and joining in a group on Facebook. Called Upholsterers Friendly forum
https://www.facebook.com/groups/582682581756217/
It is interesting to read about their businesses. Seem most of them are in the UK. Just thought I'd pass it on.

In search of a decent used machine to replace one that has been around just to long. The one that need replacing is Consew 206 RB (1) I believe. We have several feet for it so I'd like to find one that can use them. If you know anyone selling out and preferably close to Florida please keep me in mind.
Walking foot decently priced. I also would like to know if a double needle could be used as a one needle as needed. I would like a double needle for french seams but don't want to have it only useable for that purpose.
 Thanks.

The Business Of Upholstery / Sample book displays
February 03, 2015, 07:13:57 pm
Any pictures of your sample book displays? I want to reorganize ours. I was thinking about a slat wall system but don't want to buy new. Looking on CL hasnt come up with anything yet. Any ideas?
Right now they are on hooks. I have probably 4 to 5 hundred books mostly the small ones not many large. All hanging on hooks. Some on large peg boards but the weight pulls the hooks through the peg board.

The Business Of Upholstery / Busy Busy Busy
January 23, 2015, 05:39:25 pm
Since taking over the shop it has been unbelievable. I can't say it's because I now own it because most customers that call or walk in don't know yet. But none seem to care and are happy to do business with me.
Now that is great. But it's hard to keep up. I have not been able to do much work on the bench side of things and my one good Upholsterer is doing what he can to keep up. I am meeting with a possible sales woman on Saturday to help with sales calls but that wont help with the phone and walk ins. Each of the three Mondays so far have been ungodly busy with people coming in and on the phone. This past Monday my two guys were out on deliveries and I was alone in the shop with 3 deep of couples needed to be helped. This went on for 3 hours. It is a good thing to be busy but I need to get work out faster. I don't want to over extend myself with Payroll so I'm up for suggestions. Maybe after a few months and getting a bit ahead financially it will be easier to hire more people.
Another thing is keeping these jobs straight. I'm working at it and I'm confident it will all work out scheduling wise but it not that way yet. I'm taking pictures, putting them with names and tagging the pieces. But I've lost tract of a couple of jobs already. Who belongs to that chair and what fabric is for this kinda thing.
I guess I just had to vent a little. But if anyone has any ideas I'm listening.

The Business Of Upholstery / Web desginers
December 22, 2014, 06:43:04 pm
So can anyone here recommend a good designer to redo my site? I have done them for years but now I have lost Front Page as no one supports it and I don't have the time or willingness to learn something new. I need a nice site done on the cheap :) Sounds like a customer huh LOL

The Business Of Upholstery / cotton
December 22, 2014, 04:15:57 pm
For you furniture people. Do you use cotton? Or have you succumbed to the Dacron era?

I'm going back to cotton and wonder where you all purchase it. I can get it right next door to my shop. (no shipping) but it is a heavy blend. This might be the norm now a days so I'm asking. I don't expect to find pure cotton anymore but a decent blend would be good.

The Business Of Upholstery / Tomorrow is the big day
December 15, 2014, 06:05:08 pm
Well the day has come. Tomorrow I buy the business. Been a long time coming but it sure snuk up on us. Should be signing the papers around 2 or so and then all I have to do is pay the bills. Oh and try and get some work done at the same time. And sell jobs, answer phone, listen to the Designers and run like hell for the door to go home at night to do more there. I remember all that well and miss it greatly :)
Wish me luck guys and gals I'll need it.

The Business Of Upholstery / Business slogan
November 04, 2014, 05:14:30 pm
Well it is getting closer. I take over the business December 15th. I picked up a replacement van this past saturday and am very please with it. It's a 07 GMC Savana 3500. In great shape.
Now I am thinking about the lettering and need to come up with a good slogan to go along with the name. When I was in the remodeling business for a few years my slogan was "I will never leave you hanging" and it went over well with customers. But I can't seem to come up with a good one for the Upholstery. Even though I've done this most of my life LOL. So I'm asking my friends here for some input / ideas.
Company name is Minichillo's Upholstery Inc. Located in Tarpon Springs Florida.
 Any ideas?

General Discussion / issues here
September 22, 2014, 05:25:07 pm
Has anyone else had problems here? I'll explain.
I see new posts noted on the icon and there are no new posts. Whenever I click on things I get a downloaded index file from the board. I tired posting a few times lately and all I got was that download. Am I the only one?

The Business Of Upholstery / Business Name
July 31, 2014, 04:21:36 pm
I've been looking for a name for awhile. As I may have mentioned I am buying a business called Bob's Custom Upholstery. I want to keep the Custom Upholstery part and was going to just go with Paul's Custom Upholstery but I can only get the .net domain name for that. So what do you all think? Be honest.
The domain wont be able to include the ' but it can be remembered.
  Thanks gang.

The Business Of Upholstery / Finding help
June 13, 2014, 04:57:09 pm
I cant believe how hard it is to find a seamstress. I've had ads running for over a month and no one yet. I also find it hard to believe some people are so excited about the job make an appointment for an interview and don't show up. I've also had 2 that said they can't accept a job unless the pay is $$ minimum. Two of these so far with no Upholstery experience thinking they can make big bucks in this business. What is with the workers today? Whenever I have taken a job no matter where and how much I was making I worked my butt off. It's just how I am I guess.
My ranting is over now have a great week end everyone.

The Business Of Upholstery / different corp types
April 25, 2014, 06:52:44 pm
I will be incorporating this year and have been reading about it. I wonder if any of you know the best type to use.

I like the S corp tax advantages and see I could do a LLC and file for S corp tax status. Or I could just do the S corp thing on its own. What would be the benefits one over the other.
