The Business Of Upholstery / hot knives
August 22, 2017, 02:56:29 am
So how do all you that use hot knives do it. Do you use a yard stick under the cut, a sheet of something to protect the table? What tricks can you put into words? I just ordered a knife. Tired of all the fraying.

The Business Of Upholstery / Narrow crown gun
July 12, 2017, 06:17:26 pm
I don't know if I have brought this up before but I'm going to again anyway. I have searched for a narrow crown staple gun for a long time. I have one from Harbor Freight but it uses 18 gauge staples. They may as well be nails. Way to thick. While stripping some bar stools for the past week or so I see the 22 gauge narrow crowns and it makes me want to find them. This is to staple on vinyl double welt. I am using my standard guns and coloring the staples but these are so much better being narrow crown. Do ANYONE know where I can get a gun and staples 22 gauge?

The Business Of Upholstery / need a jig ideas?
June 17, 2017, 07:30:44 pm
I need to build a jig that will be very simple to use and hold a section of fabric that is between 4" to 8" wide. A gripper type tool mounted to a bench that I could slide the fabric in and when pulling on it makes it tighten down on the fabric to hold it. Sort of a concentric roller thingy. Does anyone have any ideas on where I might find some possible parts for such a thing? Or even buy something pre made if not to expensive.

Does anyone have an extra set of UPH dies #30 they would part with? Not HUX. I have several set of HUX dies and need to find the UPH size. They don't seem to make them in both sizes anymore.
Let me know if you have some and for how much. Thanks

I really miss my cushion machine.
I have been sucking down filling to fill cushions and it works well but it takes longer, and just doesn't do as good a job as the lochner did. I've made a spot for it but have to find one. Anyone know of one in the Tampa Bay area?

The Business Of Upholstery / Seam guide
February 10, 2017, 08:15:07 am
Has anyone used a guide that will follow the seam so there is a even top stitch next to the original seam? I have seen these somewhere and they consist of just a piece of steel that rides in the seam to guide the fabric. So a baseball stitch can be done better with one needle,

The Business Of Upholstery / Contracts
November 01, 2016, 06:37:06 pm
I've never used any form of Contracts with my customers either private or trade people so I am at a loss here. I think I need to create one for C.O.M. customers to explain the liability of C.O.M.s and who is responsible for what.

Does anyone use such a thing? If so would you mind sharing? Or point me in the right direction. I'd like to have something by the first of the year.

  Thanks

For you furniture guys, My girl can sew this pretty well but has a hard time with it. Also can't seem to put a zipper next to it. I personally don't sew this well myself so I can't help her much. Do any of you have a process or even a foot size to work with?
  Thanks.

The Business Of Upholstery / Winged headboards

Does anyone else make these? I did my first one last week and it came out beautiful. I would like to pick brains on this.

So I am requesting some input on machines. We have all discussed this many many many times I know but I'm looking for some hands on model numbers I might look for. I want to pickup another machine to sew things like Sunbrella, thinner goods, that will sew well and smooth and has reverse and available welt feet and accessories. I have two walkers one is compound and they both are too heavy duty to do a good job on thinner fabrics. I also am thinking about a double needle machine so I torn on which to go with.
I realize the double will sit allot unused but how well do they work as single needle machines?
I don't want new, Been there done that, and not thrilled at the outcome for the outlay. I stay at the lowest end of the money chain whenever possible.

So what do you guys and gals see as a good choice in the area. I see many Juki 5550 something on craigslist. I have no experience with these read some good about them. IDK. Help me will ya!

  Thanks my friends.

The Business Of Upholstery / Home Shows
September 07, 2015, 04:38:04 am
Chris and anyone else that may have done shows.

We went to the Florida Home show yesterday and my wife offered up the idea of taking our business to one. I'm not sure about bringing pieces of furniture to a show but am considering cornices, headboards, that sort of thing along with a book or two of pictures.
Can anyone offer some tips on the best way to go about this? Are some shows better than others?
I have been to several of these through the years and can't say I ever saw anything to do with Upholstery.
It might be an interesting experience. I know I would need a sales person to be part of it. I'm not the greatest in sales. But I would be there. It seems there are a few things that are required. Carpet, lighting, tables, walls. What might I need?

Question for Mike, Chris and anyone else that works with Sunbrella type fabrics.
I need to change the wording on my awning and want to know what paint will work on Sunbrella that will withstand the Florida sun. Or some place that I can have it done inexpensively. I plan on hand sewing a new skirt on the front of the awning.
