I don't think either way would be stronger, as long as you back your french seams that is. As far as I know it is just down to the style & finnish you want.
Yes the french takes more time, as you are doing the same seam 3 times.  But looks nice imop.

To be honest  :-[ I ran out of moulded & this has to be finnished by tomorrow.  ???
So I am using what is to hand. But it does have a curved door way which the coil takes better than the moulded.  ::)
The enclosure slides on the 'keder' all in one piece, it needs to because there is no overhang to tuck it up under & the keder makes the water seal.
So I guess I will have to bind the ends with some vinyl or something.

Nah, at the bottom edge of a panel/side curtain. Like a doorway.

SS on everything over here  ;D
My main supplier dishes out #80 staples so I tend to use that size, I have a hand gun & electric.
I 'inherited'  ;) a load of #71 ss staples & have just bought my self a hand gun to use them with, I was also left with an air gun, but it's a bit temperamental.

General Discussion / Re: Sunbrella Boat Covers
June 14, 2010, 06:36:05 am
A few of us here use Sunbrella, as with most materials which you don't want to leak. You just get one shot at the seam, if you start un picking you are leaving holes that will leak.
(Some of us use venture tape as well on seams to help seal them).
Not unless your new seam line is inside the old one of course. I believe most of us just fold the seam to one side & do one row of top stitch, sometimes turning it twice for luck,  :D it depends a bit on where the seam is & what it's doing.
You should check out the threads  ::) on needle size & threads they are also important to keep your boat dry.  ;)

Hi,
I usually use #10 moulded zips on my covers & welding the ends with an extra tooth in  ;D , but am just doing one with #10 coil zipping. How are you all finishing the open ends off ?

I bought the whole tape set from the Florida school and didn't see anything about  two dots. I just mark one dot on my frames and all I do is allow for the overlap when cutting my patterns on the table.

It's just the two dots either side of the tape. Above & below.

General Discussion / Re: 'Pushing' Zipper Flaps
June 11, 2010, 09:52:20 am
I do it the MCTI way.  Front & back poles, top flat on the table, pocket flat on the top & flap flat on the pocket  ???  & sew along the pocket edge.
For any poles in between I 'push' 1/2".  Seems to work good to me  ;)

I normally cut 2" reinforcement strips, and/or 2 1/2" canvas if I am binding the edge or 3" with out binding & turn both edges under. I have just ordered some pre cut 2" pvc for reinforcing  that's gota save loads of time.... I hope.... ;D

hiya

I've just been going through my MCFA dvd's and they use dots 1/2 " apart . I was using 1"

so i've been drawing it out and made a sample piece, i figure I need 2 dots all over.

Because this is a pram hood and the rear curtain does not remove ( it has a walk through opening ) I also need to put 2 dots on the hull at the stern, not just one.

I've been getting away with it because it in my ignorance i've been using dots to pattern the top and then returning with the new top and patterning the doors separately, so i got away with it until now

Also I think that i'm going to pattern the new one forgetting the tiny bow at the front, you can see in the pic ( scroll up ) that there is no join in the panel there, I'll pattern as one panel then lift the bow into position to mark for pockets. its a 60" span so needs the little bow.

do tell me if this sounds like i'm wrong

That sounds ok Rich, yes if it is a straight run between the front & second pole. should be fine.   IMOP  :P
I also prefer a bigger overlap  ;D  1" is good  :D

I kinda like that idea!  Think of all the interesting pieces of junk that everyone comes across.  What better way to learn the right way, than to see a crappy example next to the way it should be!

What do you guys think?  Should I create a folder next to the "Green Room" for the "Junk Room"?  Might replace the Friday Funnies! ;D  Anyone want to put in some pics of what "NOT" to do, not just canvas, but anything?

Yeh I like that, junk room.. sewing nasties.. How not to do it .... :D

Hi June, no rain flaps at all.
It's just so messy  ::) It has four short pockets for the pole & only two on each pole line up with it ??? the end pockets have not been cut to the right curve & are rucked up in the corners to make the bend.
And note the nice wavy edges  :-X   Don't they have straight edges in the Balearic's  :o

I think we could start a new section on how not to do it  :D
Or nightmare canvas   :P
