On Going Repairs

Can anyone offer up an opinion for the following questions
1- How did the finish get that way ?
2- Can it be done in the house ?
3- Is the customer holding back info ?

It looks like it was stored in a garage or barn or something. If it was, the haze could be caused by moisture or perhaps mildew. Tell the customer you're not sure if it can be repaired in house until you see it. Tell them there will be a service charge to look at it. Or they could bring it by the shop and you will give your expert opinion for free.

Sometimes customers are looking for a written estimate but avoid the cause explanations for fear of a charge from the repair service to visit and write it up.  I said to the customer the quilt marks and haze on the top make me think this was stored and the blanket it was stored with was wet when it went into storage.  Customer replied - " I only had a table cloth on it and it was never in storage"  When I told her if she wants a written estimate it will run $ 125.00 - she said I'll let you know.  That means she'll keep looking for someone to give her a free estimate

I think that is caused by moisture getting under the shellac. I would use denatured ethenal or methanol or one of he other chemicals that dissolve shellac and dry fast. I would only do this on a table that I owned because I am not sure that this is the cause. I think you would need to test the finish to find out what it is for sure. Just my 19 cents. (2 cents adjusted for inflation from the time I was born.)

It's a lacquer finish and I think beyond an alcohol coating to release the moisture - I think it needs to be refinished -

Two exotic veneered snack tables - loose legs, broken and missing edges - also older repairs not done well.  Mostly re-glue and touch up except a 6 in. piece of molding lost.  Between the red lines is the replacement molding - the wood is maple with drawn in coloring + grain

Childs chair - weaving always kills my back but this was a small seat and I used a pre twisted strand that was fairly thick so it went fast -
The full time weavers up here are charging crazy prices.  Last week a customer asked me to rush 6 D/R chairs - the seats were 24 x 18.  I told her I couldn't do it - too large a weaving job for me but that I'd get her a price - I called the weaver up here a reliable service and for pre twisted paper he wanted 350 per chair - she didn't do it - prices must be over the top everywhere

Here in SW Ohio I know of one lady who does weaving and caning. Her husband died a year or so ago and they used to sit in front of the TV in their living room doing the work. Now she does it by herself. I don't know of anyone else who does it. I've done two projects for friends but it takes so long I could never do it and charge the amount of money needed to get paid for my time.

I've done many Shaker tape weaving chairs. They go faster and are easier on my hands. It's something I offer but there just aren't that many opportunities.

This job came along today and not the usual but with business a little off I know this will keep me busy in the shop for a few days when there are no service calls. I'm 5 miles from the center of New Rochelle where the National Guard is set up to deliver food to the elderly that are advised not to leave their home.  An Eye brow window - old Tutor on the water in Connecticut - I could have gone there by boat if I had one.  Many businesses are suffering here especially restaurants - locals are asking that you at least do take out or purchase gift certificates and leave decent tips.  Keep positive and stay safe
