On Going Repairs

Service call today - new furniture and customer's repair expectations always high with new product  - cross grain gouge.  Burn in and color - matte finish.  The guy was born the same year as me but doing a little better than me :)  Anyway we talked Frazier - Monroe Knicks - and the draft we both missed by 100 numbers - an unfair advantage for a service man to bond with the client.  He had to say he liked the repair.

Service call today - satinwood banding - a piece broken off that I glued back but another piece lost measuring 3/4 in. wide. Burn in back ground color and grain with a tiny brush -   Tough matching the natural color - looked OK once polished to match satin gloss

The movers sent me to a house to retouch an arm they glued.  I couldn't do it in the house because of the bad glue job they did.  I told the owner the cost of repair is $ 200.00 more than it should have been because of the crew trying to do repairs on the fly.  I see this all the time and can't understand why they think they can repair fine furniture in the back of the truck with gorilla glue

They used the Gorilla Glue and thought they could clamp it with tape? This is why amateurs shouldn't attempt repairs. Especially with Gorilla Glue. What a mess. Now you have to clean all that glue out before you can repair it properly. I feel for you, I hope the moving company is footing the bill.
There cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full.

Pried apart the gorilla glue repair with a box knife and flat screwdriver - cleaned up the surfaces and glued the broken parts back 3 three clamps - epoxy glue.  Mix 5-1 always a waste but the pumps disburse like a 1/4 deep in a plastic cup.  West system - haven't found anything stronger.  Next sand smooth and fill

Van dyke + burnt umber glaze - satin + flat lacquer top coats.  Color looks good when compared to the other arm but both arms have wear + soil marks - not my job !

Marble Vase - bottom broken - the broken piece fit back well but - chips were missing - the polyester fill is a little blacker than the base color but it doesn't catch your eye -

Man!  Steve you almost literary had to rebuild that part of the chair.  Do you get much of this type of work
from the owner of the item or is it from a mover's damage? 

I don't know how it is perceived by the rest but I get a lot of my furniture repair work due
to, what looks like to me.  I understand newer furniture ( stuff made less than 50 years ago) isn't
the same so I wonder if it is the user/handlers or the quality of the stuff.  Can't be due to lower
quality all the time.  I see some of the movers as they handle the furniture and they are not always
"careful" with the stuff.

Anyway the good part is - able to pay the bills!

I know Doyle - a little bit more damage and it would have been easier to just cut off the damaged area and put on a new back piece for the arm.   It was a decent quality chair Ethan Allan but they were careless and broke it off and into pieces.  It is maple  - glued and screwed to the back post so it wasn't a hazard or a weak link but they managed to break a good solid connection splintering the wood.  Movers give me the major portion of my business - over the years I have seen just about all they can break -
There are terrific furniture handlers in this business but what it comes down to most times is management blunders - sending a truck too small - sending inexperienced helpers - missing equipment - under estimating the load -  add to that bad weather - long walks - slow or broken elevators - customers who make the guys move everything twice - accounts that expect more than humanly possible - stuff happens and not always is it the laborers fault.
Bad decisions like repairing furniture in the back of the truck is not what the owners or repair services want to see

Yes, movers at time don't look careful enough or .......something. 

But, again their job at times have incredible expectations - for example trying to carry a heavy
item up two or three stair levels.

I am often given a sofa frame to fix that sure looks like it could have been mishandled with a dolly or
squeezed through a tight corner?

Like you say,  everyone has bills to pay.

4 chairs reglued and recover using customers fabric.  They have 2 arm chairs but aren't sure if they want to do them.  I'm hoping they will when I deliver these back.  Arm chairs don't loosen like side chairs so they are hedging but the seat fabric I think they will want to do.
