Footboard - piece missing on the lower section of the curved rail. Walnut - doweled both sides with a slot underneath to accept the 1/8th panel - Before repairing the damaged end there was only 1/2 of the hole for the 1/2 inch dowel - not a good connection.

I haven't worked on this job because I asked the customer to bring me the 4th leg although it wasn't damaged I still need to tone it a bit to match the three that I colored so far.

Must be their latest effort to get people to pay to use. Last time they loaded up so much spam it made it impossible to use. That didn't work because users simply went to other sites to upload images.
Following a pet damage repair one of these Mom sites listed my name for furniture repair but instead of getting Antique Restorations - they think I'm the Dog Whisperer Repairer -
These sites are great and free. My buddy Jose tried Angies List and after spending $ 300.00 w/unequal return he gave it up - they still email him a couple of times a week trying to get him back on board.
The Mom's sites are chock full of customers - sooo many moms - so little time ! I might have to start taking 1 A days to keep up. Photobucket allowed me back but I reduced the pictures to 60 kb to stretch my free space. See what the photos look like

This is a high end table - some kind of zebra veneers - $ 4000.00 new - it has a glass top. The veneers look to be heat pressed and they aren't holding well. When the movers wrapped blankets around the wood the veneers got snagged and pieces were torn off. I need to fill in the voids because than I can faux paint in the stripes - I'll never find veneers to match if I try to replace the top veneers entirely.

I don't know Steve, maybe you can set me straight. To me veneers are a way to use cheep wood for the base and then cover it with a more expensive and thin outer layer. And I know there are plenty of valuable antiques that have the veneer surface. I don't understand, If you're going for high quality why not just use solid wood.
We just upholstered a rocker that had a piece of veneer missing from the lower back. It looked like someone repaired it with a piece of bubble gum. I do not have your skills to repair it properly so I left it alone.
Veneers are used when you want to display the most decorative and highly figured application as possible. Highly figured woods are not stable - lots of movement therefore you apply them thin in veneer form to a stable surface and you get both strength + figure. Also veneers can be laid in different patterns that can't be done with solid wood e.g. sunburst, bookmatched etc. There's nothing wrong with veneers unless the substrate is poor or the glue used is inadequate. Yes when sanding you don't have any thickness under neath but the older veneers are heavier on antiques - a lot more than what they do today and will allow decent sanding for refinishing.
In the photo are bundles of inlay veneers given to me by a cabinet maker from Italy - he's in his 90's and was clearing out his stash - lots of great uses for veneers.

Paul maybe it was a yard plus - not much more if any. I didn't measure other than to put a seat on top of one quadrant when I picked up the chairs and I had pull. The fabric was folded in half and half again so there were 4 squares that seemed to be enough without measuring - the slip seats were small

The customer wanted to stain the cherry side chairs darker to match their Kitchen set with the arms - I tried to talk him out of it but no luck. The arm chair was beech and the side chairs cherry. Had to strip and bleach the cherry wood side chairs to kill the red. A wash coat of raw umber to further kill red. A dark gray stain, than sealed, a chalky black glaze, 4 coats of lacquer. Too much trouble trying to match the color with different woods. Glad this one is done. Clean up the shop and have a beer now

Ethan Allen side chair - back post broken. Added a dowel and reglued everything. Had to dig out the wood plugs to get to the screws - the hardest part will be trying to match the color for the new plugs the stain done with tinted translucent undercoat and burnt umber glaze.

Antique Hong Kong export table. Believe it or not a high value item w/original label. Just missing a few pieces of rattan wrap. I had to soak the material in water to make the bend and that prevented me from gluing the beginning tab on with cyanoacrylate. I used yellow glue to attach a tab - than twist and pinch clamp the end tab with more yellow glue. It looks like a quick job but the drying time has this in the shop for three days. Little billing - lots of time and I still have to color the rattan pieces to blend -

Beautiful work!!! When my grandpa was a young man he used to deliver blocks of ice for people to put in their ice boxes. I was told most of the houses he delivered to were 3 floor apartments. I wonder if he went to the third floor first and worked his way down, or the other way around?

Holy cow Steve nice job. Many years ago I inherited an icebox form my great grandmas farm. The farm was no longer productive and the icebox was abandoned in the chicken coop. I had to swap out a broken drawer for a furniture company and I came away with the drawer and tracks. It sat around here for a few months - I was thinking to save the tracks and toss the drawer but second thoughts - can't waste a good drawer w/full extension tracks. Nailed together a plywood box and put the new drawer into service under the other sewing drawers - I'm trying to think what sewing stuff needs a larger drawer ? I have two electric carving knives that can fit in with the blades attached ? Maybe some of Gene's videos or his calorie counting books ? Nah wouldn't fit !

Gray paint would be nice but they want a gray stain. They brought over a can of minwax gray stain. I striped off some finish and applied the stain - first the color was wrong because pine blotches and absorbs the stain too quick too dark. Second the golden color of the pine was showing through and they didn't like that. So i kicked them out and said I'll figure out a way to make it look right. I can't use their stain -

I know this probably won't help but I stained my fence with Behr semi transparent stain, and it turned it out great. You can get samples from the Depot.
Finally got stain on - it looks a little blue but it's gray I made it with white and black. Sent this photo to the client and she loved it. Hopefully tomorrow start getting some finish on it - this type of piece takes up too much room in my shop.

Even though the customer said she loved it - I kept seeing blue. I only used black and white and you can't make blue from that. I don't know if it's the florescent lights in the shop so i took a drawer outside and it still looked blue although when you put a blue sample next to the color it doesn't match. Out of my own frustration I added black and orange dye to the sealer coat today and I'm seeing gray instead of blue for a change. It matches my rockwell table saw base and I think that's enough stress for one piece of furniture. Over Christmas I'll get a few coats of satin lacquer on it and get it the heck out of the workshop.

The movers sent me to a house to retouch an arm they glued. I couldn't do it in the house because of the bad glue job they did. I told the owner the cost of repair is $ 200.00 more than it should have been because of the crew trying to do repairs on the fly. They used the Gorilla Glue and thought they could clamp it with tape? This is why amateurs shouldn't attempt repairs. Especially with Gorilla Glue. What a mess. Now you have to clean all that glue out before you can repair it properly. I feel for you, I hope the moving company is footing the bill.
Pried apart the gorilla glue repair with a box knife and flat screwdriver - cleaned up the surfaces and glued the broken parts back 3 three clamps - epoxy glue. Mix 5-1 always a waste but the pumps disburse like a 1/4 deep in a plastic cup. West system - haven't found anything stronger. Next sand smooth and fill

from the owner of the item or is it from a mover's damage?
I don't know how it is perceived by the rest but I get a lot of my furniture repair work due
to, what looks like to me. I understand newer furniture ( stuff made less than 50 years ago) isn't
the same so I wonder if it is the user/handlers or the quality of the stuff. Can't be due to lower
quality all the time. I see some of the movers as they handle the furniture and they are not always
"careful" with the stuff.
Anyway the good part is - able to pay the bills!

I know Doyle - a little bit more damage and it would have been easier to just cut off the damaged area and put on a new back piece for the arm. It was a decent quality chair Ethan Allan but they were careless and broke it off and into pieces. It is maple - glued and screwed to the back post so it wasn't a hazard or a weak link but they managed to break a good solid connection splintering the wood. Movers give me the major portion of my business - over the years I have seen just about all they can break -
There are terrific furniture handlers in this business but what it comes down to most times is management blunders - sending a truck too small - sending inexperienced helpers - missing equipment - under estimating the load - add to that bad weather - long walks - slow or broken elevators - customers who make the guys move everything twice - accounts that expect more than humanly possible - stuff happens and not always is it the laborers fault.
Bad decisions like repairing furniture in the back of the truck is not what the owners or repair services want to see

But, again their job at times have incredible expectations - for example trying to carry a heavy
item up two or three stair levels.
I am often given a sofa frame to fix that sure looks like it could have been mishandled with a dolly or
squeezed through a tight corner?

4 chairs reglued and recover using customers fabric. They have 2 arm chairs but aren't sure if they want to do them. I'm hoping they will when I deliver these back. Arm chairs don't loosen like side chairs so they are hedging but the seat fabric I think they will want to do.

It looks like it was stored in a garage or barn or something. If it was, the haze could be caused by moisture or perhaps mildew. Tell the customer you're not sure if it can be repaired in house until you see it. Tell them there will be a service charge to look at it. Or they could bring it by the shop and you will give your expert opinion for free.
Sometimes customers are looking for a written estimate but avoid the cause explanations for fear of a charge from the repair service to visit and write it up. I said to the customer the quilt marks and haze on the top make me think this was stored and the blanket it was stored with was wet when it went into storage. Customer replied - " I only had a table cloth on it and it was never in storage" When I told her if she wants a written estimate it will run $ 125.00 - she said I'll let you know. That means she'll keep looking for someone to give her a free estimate

I think that is caused by moisture getting under the shellac. I would use denatured ethenal or methanol or one of he other chemicals that dissolve shellac and dry fast. I would only do this on a table that I owned because I am not sure that this is the cause. I think you would need to test the finish to find out what it is for sure. Just my 19 cents. (2 cents adjusted for inflation from the time I was born.)
It's a lacquer finish and I think beyond an alcohol coating to release the moisture - I think it needs to be refinished -

Childs chair - weaving always kills my back but this was a small seat and I used a pre twisted strand that was fairly thick so it went fast -
The full time weavers up here are charging crazy prices. Last week a customer asked me to rush 6 D/R chairs - the seats were 24 x 18. I told her I couldn't do it - too large a weaving job for me but that I'd get her a price - I called the weaver up here a reliable service and for pre twisted paper he wanted 350 per chair - she didn't do it - prices must be over the top everywhere

Here in SW Ohio I know of one lady who does weaving and caning. Her husband died a year or so ago and they used to sit in front of the TV in their living room doing the work. Now she does it by herself. I don't know of anyone else who does it. I've done two projects for friends but it takes so long I could never do it and charge the amount of money needed to get paid for my time.
I've done many Shaker tape weaving chairs. They go faster and are easier on my hands. It's something I offer but there just aren't that many opportunities.

This job came along today and not the usual but with business a little off I know this will keep me busy in the shop for a few days when there are no service calls. I'm 5 miles from the center of New Rochelle where the National Guard is set up to deliver food to the elderly that are advised not to leave their home. An Eye brow window - old Tutor on the water in Connecticut - I could have gone there by boat if I had one. Many businesses are suffering here especially restaurants - locals are asking that you at least do take out or purchase gift certificates and leave decent tips. Keep positive and stay safe

Woodworking done on one window - still have to clean off the existing glass from the old glazing - install the glass and add glazing putty - although the time in the shop split up over a few days this one window took 8 hours just for the woodwork. I had a lot of guessing to do since the existing wood rails were so rotted at the ends there was nothing to copy - had to use a little exterior wood filler here and there but overall it is OK - this window is at the highest point in the building so no close ups from the street - better for me - front + back photos

The first window has its glass installed and painted - 2nd window finished the wood repairs - the customer told me she priced out a replacement window but the modern copy of this window didn't look nice against their old colonial building - plus the contractor needed a hefty pay check in addition to making the windows because he wanted to make a template from the outside and this is the third floor. I removed the windows from the inside - easy easy for an old guy

Glazier points for the glass followed by white silicone. I thought about oil putty but it never dries and doesn't seal for a long time and I want these panes to be water proof - the water is what rotted them out -

The area is called Old Greenwich - looking out at the long Island Sound - across is Long Island. The customer says she has the window open during the summer to allow heat to escape from the third floor.
What I thought was backwards was the decorative side of the window with the best side of the mullions showing was hung to face inside. The other side where you drop in the glass faced out and was just squared off with no shaped molded mullions. Customer said you couldn't see that detail from the ground if it was reversed. Customer is always right !

This job was a few weeks ago - table going to the Banana Republic Store - they broken the marble apron off one edge - two days of gluing - filling - and polishing out -
I only have the one before photo that they sent me to see the damage by email - the apron is mitered to the top surface - the pain was scraping off the old marble glue to get fairly decent fitting surfaces -

Only one job upcoming for the next 7 days - business went away but distancing is the right thing to do -
Anyway for a long time I wanted to make an awning over my fan to block out the rain and snow - usually I just put a piece of lucite over the opening but the wind blows it away or snow prevents me from getting to it. I looked into a ready made one but anything decent was $ 300.00 or more. Lots of time now to do those things I'd been too lazy or too busy to do.
The roof (not cut out yet) will be plywood with two coats of paint. I'm considering a drip edge - black paper and some old roof shingles but maybe the painted plywood alone with a two inch overhang is more than enough.
Any comments would be appreciated ! I don't want to go over board on this thing
