Electric Stapler - Duo Fast?

My Duo Fast electric is just about used up - motor works but the return spring is NOT recoiling the plunger.


The one I have is not the current model Duo Fast sells, which I think is the 5018A, for a little over $200.

So, the question is; anyone using a Duo Fast that is being sold today? Model number, 5018A or another model that is suited for furniure?

I am assuming Duo Fast is not made in china and sold through these discount tool stores (Harbor Freight)?  Am I correct on that assumption?

This thread is not about electric v/s air (Pneumatic).  I have six of those now on two different compressers.  

Maybe Burch sells a Duo Fast?

The price of a new electric duo fast kinda surprised me.  Well, maybe it did, at first, but I got to thinking about what I paid for my electric Duo a long time ago.  Then, factoring in for inflation, I guess the new duo fast for over $400 is to be expected.


But.....................Somehow, that gun at that price, inspired me to look inside my Duo and just see what I can see.

It wasn't intuitive at first how and what to take off to look inside.  But, being brilliant (not), I figured it out after about 15 minutes.  Got it apart and it was apparent what happened.  I must have hit some metal during use and the plunger was bent.

I could not believe what I was able to do with a vice.  I actually got the plunger flattened out, and with some lubrication the gun is now working better than I can remember.

So, back in the saddle again and still got my $400 plus bucks.

I use this on mobil situations, the wood frames are made of today compensates for its deficiency, compared to air systems.

So, now I will have to be looking for the staples.  Burch said they are not restocking any staples after current stock is sold.

Oh well, mabe there will be some old stock somewhere, when that problem surfaces. 

Right now, got staples, and will shoot!

Doyle, I have a Duo-Fast electric staple gun I bought about 20 years ago so it's probably the older one. The problem that keeps happening with mine is with the internal bumper. I keep spares now since it's always the same thing. When it stops working, I put in a new one and I'm good to go. Oh, and probably about 10 years ago, the top of the plunger broke (plastic) and the replacement I got for it is metal.

Rich when you think of it, let me know the model number of your gun.

I will check mine to compare.

I found it interesting that the newer gun used the same cone spring as my old gun does.  I wonder how many other parts are the same?

Also, do you have any problem finding staples for your gun?

Burch, said they were not restocking staples for mine.  When current inventory is sold, I will need another staple source.

Masco Fabrics says that they carry staples for the 5018 model. $7-$8 per box, depending on length. He told me that they are NOT a discontinued item, and they have no plans to stop restocking them. But of course, a year from now....who knows?

Hey you guys, in review of what Burch was selling for around $200 had to be an air stapler.

I am going back to their catalog and get it straight.

Dennis is correct, the 5018 is not going off the market.  I believe that is a air tacker.

I will review the catalog, get the correct number of my Duo Fast and come back with something that makes sense.

Anyway Rich you must have the latest Duo Fast Electric that is available for upholstery.  My Duo Fast must be the model that preceded yours Rich, Birch did tell me that as soon as stock is depleted they will no longer sell the staples for mine but will continue to sell the latest Duo Fast and staples for it.

Lately, I haven't had time to clear my head and take a breather.  Lot's of business coming in the door.

I need to review this because as long as I can keep my Duo Fast working, if Burch has no staples left to fit it, maybe someone else will have a box or two.

I think that 5018 gun is air driven.

The 50 series staplers (such as 5018) use 1/2" crown 20 gauge, similar to 80 series air guns.
The 30 series staplers use 3/8" crown 22 gauge, similar to 71 series air guns.

Yup, and matter of fact says it is electric.  

Price is what I said around $200 in above post, I haven't been to the shop to check my story out on the series number of my gun and what
Burch might be selling as its replacement

On the 5018 gun, what did they mean by 2 inch (your link Dennis), surely the 1/2 crown staples shot by that gun don't go up to that size?

I am confused!

Probably just additional information to explain other equipment they had.

But, clearly it was electrical, the picture of the stapler showed it had a power cord.

One thing, I could be educated on is;  the stapler for around $200 we are looking at that comes in two widths, how does it compare to the Duo Fast that sells for a bit over $400?  I also understand the more expensive also handles the two crown sizes, in half inch and three eights?  I guess the more expensive is just a stronger stapler?  When I go to the shop, and think about it, (LOL) I will try to get my Burch data and also the number of my old Duo Fast. 

When all this is straight, I might want to know where Rich gets his Duo Fast parts, particularly those that might fit my old stapler.  Further, getting parts for my old gun also hindges on furture availability of staples for it.  Right now, the old stapler is working well, this is the one I pulled the plunger out and straightened it on my bench vise.  That was a tedious task, but I guess it work fine, the stapler is working fine.  I just use it for mobile work, I don't like electric as well as air, but what is a feller to do?  LOL.

My mobil work has doubled in recent months.  Someone asked why I don't hire someone to do just that, that just doesn't sound like something that would work like silk.

Oh well, back to staplers, whether parts and staples are going to be available for my gun?

More like 80 grit sandpaper in my experience.

I've bought several electric staplers and haven't found one that reliably drive staples into hardware frames.  Does you DuoFast?  Or do you hammer staples in the last 1/8"?  Any other brands anyone recommends?  I've purchased a small Makita compressor (really nice - takes oil but relatively quiet and efficient compared to most small compressors) for portability but would love to know if there is a reliable stapler that can be used.  We do a lot of commercial work also, so a fast recovery rate is also important.
