Not as in what company or yourself, but who do you do it for?

Myself, it's my son. It seems to be paying off. Almost tweny, works hard,
does well in school and is starting a music career. Here's his band. He and the
vocalist are the main songwriters. Just cut a demo and have enough material
for a full length CD.

Can you say proud pop?

He's on the far right.

I love the rockin blues and the Shade Parade definitely does rock. Your son really smokes that guitar.
The biggest outdoors concert in Florida starts 2nd weekend in April. Lots of blues for sure. Springing The Blues on Jacksonville Beach and its free, two stages and steps from the Atlantic Ocean. Check it out

No lack for talent and the bands change about every hour. If your sons band could get a gig there it would shift their career into over drive. They would fit in for sure. When the concert ends each night the party shifts to all the local bars. Although by that time I'm ready for bed. Sucks getting old, I miss all the good party's.

Good luck to him and the rest of the band.

Thanks for the kind words. I forwarded the links for the festival
to their manager and he's going to contact George's tomorrow.

I could use a break down there. Any recommendations on where
to stay?

If you are a camper the city of Jacksonville has a great campground right on the ocean. Only 7 or 8 mins away.

Excellent. Thanks for sharing. I have been a musician and am always interested in listening to new groups.

I started playing drums as a little kid. Then switched to guitar and later in high school started playing blues harp. I was a singer throughout my musical career. My last time on stage was in the late 80's. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss it. I loved playing but the life is not conducive for a father of two.

My influences back then and our set numbers centered around Muddy Waters ( hence my nickname Mojo ), John Lee Hooker, BB King, etc. ( mainly their uptempo songs ). We also played some J Giels and other 70's band music. I found studio work frustrating though it was a necessity to lay down demo tapes. We used to record in a studio owned by a friend who was recording some big name acts like Chuck Berry, etc. Alot of history in that old studio. :)

Due to a stroke several years ago I lost all ability to play my guitar and sold my prize possession, a Gibson ES 135. This Gibson had a special tone to it for some reason or another. It must have been the wood they used that day but it had a tone all to itself. That guitar found a good home and together with its new owner is doing studio work in Nashville. I bought a set of drums a couple years ago to use as therapy to try and get my left side of the brain coordinating with my right. It helped some but I didn't get the results I truly wanted. The dogs loved it as they would in and curl up and listen Dad playing along with the music. :)

My life has been music. I love it, all kinds from Blues to Rock to Opera to Country. ( I hate hip hop and rap ). Thankfully I married a very accomplished musician and we share the same passion for the same types of music. My wife was a singer/actress and used to do theater work in Australia. But she has that natural talent to pick up any instrument and play it well. She is very good on the Sax, piano, classical guitar, clarinet and also plays some mandolin and bass. The Bass guitar was her Christmas present this year. But her talent really shines when she is playing classical guitar. She is phenomenal. Our office is jam packed full of instruments, amps, etc. and I have about went broke buying instruments to feed her passion. :)

Your son has an amazing band. They are very tight, are great musicians and the vocals are awesome. I could hear the blues influence in some songs and also heard some good ole 70's influence in a few sections of another. I loved it and will gladly buy a CD once they drop them on the market. Keep us posted. Congrats Dad and please give your son my personal best wishes for an awesome career. :)

Also I am going to send this off to a buddy of mine. He travels the country doing gigs with bands that need a professional guitarist for a gig. he also is a studio musician and just did some studio work in Nashville. he loves hearing the up and coming talents.

Thanks again for posting.

Mojo and DBR, new and up and coming talent is what the Springing The Blues is all about. Which is what I love about it. You hear a lot of the classics but also a lot of good original stuff. The band shell is huge with two walls of speakers. And two large video screens. They play rain or shine. But what I like is the smaller acoustic stage. You can get up-close and personal. Much more intimate experience.

Let's hoist one for the distaff side of Rhythm and Blues... Etta James, who died last Friday.  There was a lovely remembrance of her on NPR's Weekend Edition.  She had it all, a great voice, the ability to be tender or brassy, and delight audiences for decades.  Her Christmas album is terrific, too!

Bobbin, Etta James is one of my wife's favorites. She will be sorely missed.

My favorite song.

Here is a list of some of the bands playing the three day event on Jacksonville Beach in three weeks. The largest free blues fest in Fl. Outdoors and on the beach.

Joanne Shaw Taylor will be there Saturday.

(back on topic?)

I used to attend conferences and education sessions back when I was in the corporate world.   Every once in a while, a "motivational speaker" would begin his presentation, "How many of you are self-employed?"

Naturally, there would be few if any hands go up.

The speaker would then say, "WRONG.  You are all self-employed.   You, yourself, have to watch out for your career, your advancement, and your development.   Nobody else is going to do that for you.   You have to look out for No. 1."
