General Discussion / Re: Expensive Anti-roll device tip

I don't have any green tape so I buy those big flat pencils from Home Depot that roofers use. I asked a roofer once why he didn't just level the table. He walked away muttering something under his breath that I couldn't hear. I think he was embarrassed that he had never thought of that before!?!

Thanks for your posts. I feel better about this stuff. I will definitely use it for outdoor cushions in the future.

I appreciate hearing that someone else used it for dining room seats. I did this one slip seat with it because the customer wanted something harder than foam.

I also cut it with big shears - using two hands: one to squeeze the handles and one to squeeze the blades. A hacksaw blade cuts well in one direction but tears it up too much in the other. If I get into using a lot of it I wonder if a band saw would work well?

One bobcat would be odd. Two would be even.

A few years ago I was talking to a guy on Sanibel Island, FL who said he saw a jaguar, the cat type, not the car. The rangers said they did not believe him. He would need footprints, a picture or two, and a carcas would be good also.

General Discussion / Poly fiber board
December 29, 2010, 06:15:13 am
I once dated a lady named Poly Fiber Board. But that's for another topic.

Has anyone used Poly Fiber board? 2" x 30" x 60" sheet. 32 oz. Price is only $30.50. It easily splits in half.

My supplier says a lot of people are using it for outdoor cushions because it is so much cheaper than outdoor urethane foam. I wonder how well it wears outdoors? They said water passes through it. I wonder about mold and mildew also?

I just did a dining room slip seat with it because the customer wanted a base that was more firm than the molded urethane foam that came with the chair. It looks nice but I wonder, again, how well it will wear.

Thank you,

Excellent prose. I enjoyed it. Thank you.

It has been a long time since I was on the 'nice' list. I almost forgot what it felt like.

I don't understand these videos. JC Penny doesn't even sell a dual bag vaccuum.

General Discussion / Re: welting feet
December 22, 2010, 05:37:46 am
I have 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. I also have a zipper foot that I can use to make welt cord out of anything - I can buy rope at Walmart and make welt cord. The only problem with the zipper foot is that when the welt cord is large I have to work hard at keeping it out from under the needle.

I did a chair and ottoman in a really 'far out' black and white fabric, kind of like a panda print, sort of, for an Interior Designer who does a home and garden show once a year. I did this several years ago. She used it to get upholstery business for herself, and thus for me.

She is a fairly consistent customer of mine. This home and garden show was her #1 source of new business for many years. She does everything in terms of Interior Designing, so I don't know how well it would be for someone who only did one thing, like upholstery without all the other stuff.

One piece of furniture could pay for your expenses and time. I think more important than the price of the booth is what kind of people go to the home show? Are they potential customers for you?

Good luck with it if you choose to dive in.

The Business Of Upholstery / Re: Ordering a laptop

If you haven't already, you may want to spend time reviewing Quickbooks. There are several different versions of it. Are you going to do payroll with online access? Inventory? Only Estimates and Invoices and basic accounting? Banking?

Open Office is great. I love it. The only issue I have run into is when I email doc files to others and they have microsoft word. Sometimes the format is messed up, such as the paragraphs are all out of whack. I deal with this by converting my docs to PDF files and this eliminates the problem.

General Discussion / Re: Difficult upholstery fabric
December 18, 2010, 05:36:13 pm
I've used fusable backing on that type of fabric a few times. I buy the rolls of 1/2" and steam it to where I am going to cut. It is very time consuming. And yes, steam a sample piece first.

If the area on the back that is fully woven is wide enough, I try to cut my welt cord strips from this area so I don't have to mess with all those threads.

Other than this, cutting them off is the only other way that I have dealt with this type of fabric.

Which ever you decide on, don't forget these words of wisdom: Keep saying "I love you" until she puts down the knife.

When I saw the word 'radial' I thought you were going for new tires. Now that would be a Xmas present any wife would love.

Thank you all for the kind comments. The house certainly feels different.

I wonder how cold Michael Vick's heart must be to find entertainment in dogs suffering.

I just saw, again, the Subject of this thread: A fun distraction in the shop today.... Wow can we get off topic sometimes!

Hey bobbin, there was an English author named C. S. Lewis. He wrote "The Chronicles of Narnia", among a lot of other things. He believed that every living thing had an eternal soul. All animals would be in heaven. A person asked him if even mosquitoes had eternal souls and would they go to heaven. He said, "Why can't mosquitoes 'heaven' be a part of man's 'hell'?"

I read these posts last night. I just got back from the emergency vet. Fannie, our border collie, died. She was 15. We knew her all those years but we took her in 2 years ago when her owner moved to another town.

She survived a pulmanary embolism 2 months ago. This morning her heart stopped just before the vet was going to put her down.

She had been a 'working' dog her entire life. Herding sheep and competing in competitions. When she came to live with us I taught her the joy of begging for treats.

I think she had a wonderful retirement.

Yes, Geech, crying is about the only thing you can do at a time like this.
