We had a dusting Monday as part of this Arctic whatever. It's been below freezing all week with nasty wind chills as well. Got up at 6 this morning and the snow was just starting to fall. Went out a bit ago to shovel the Sew 'n Sew area as I had a customer come by at 8. On a Saturday??? I was showered and dressed but my hair was still wet-ugh. I'm sure she was impressed. : o
Anyone else had the pleasure of their first shoveling session of the year yet? Counting down the days until Spring and glorious warm weather arrives!

I should hope not!
I did take Jimmy for a walk this afternoon. It was still snowing to beat the band and he was absolutely loving it. Me, not so much. There wasn't any wind right then so it wasn't horrendously cold but I could hardly see from the snowflakes landing on my glasses and then melting. A wonder I didn't wander into traffic or something. Anyway, he had a good time and I survived it so it was a win-win.

We got 18 " of snow today........Wait.....That was when I was living in Michigan and that occurred in 1978. :)
Today it was in the 70's and sunny. :)
Chris

We moved here Dec of '05. We had a snowfall Sunday afternoon with an inch or so of ice beforehand but it was gone by the 10th of Dec when we assumed possession of our house. Worked well as there was no fence around the backyard so we were able to get the holes for the posts dug and concrete in place so that we could get fence in so that we could move the dogs over from my in-laws. Temps were below freezing for most of the winter but we didn't have so much as a dusting of snow all winter. First day of spring we had a monster snowfall (22"). I've never seen that much snow from one storm in my life. Bob had to dig a place in the backyard for the dogs to use as they would pretty much have disappeared in the drifts otherwise. Once the top of the snow got frozen over, Carly especially loved to play "King of the Mountain". Jimmy pretty much went out, did business and then wanted back in where it was warm but Carly seemed to love to explore the frozen drifts.
Hope to never see another snowstorm like that ... EVER!

We had a light dusting of snow here in SW Ohio. It melted on the streets and stuck on the car windshields.
The older I get and the more my bones hurt from the cold winters, the more I understand why so many people hate folks who live in Florida. That's why we move to Florida: Hate 'em or join 'em.

It's be interesting to have upholsterers on here who live in Hawaii and whine and complain about the lava flows.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ooes_mqTwME
gene
Yup, we're freezing our touches off and they're in shorts and sandals. Although, I would think the lava flow would be just a touch disconcerting. I can handle blizzards and tornadoes but hurricanes and lava flows scare the bejesus out of me. It's all in what you grow up with, I think.
Virginia
My daughter (in northern UP of MI) got "only" 8-9 inches. The grandkids were complaining that there was not enough snow to make a decent snowman. (Last winter, they got 300 total inches). To put that in perspective, if it didn't sublimate away, it would be to the eaves of a standard 3 story house.
We got about an inch here in Missouri and the temps have been way below normal. I'm with Gene, the older I get the more I dislike winter! Having eight grand kids and one great grandson I can confidently say we won't be moving anywhere warm either. If I worked indoors all of the time it would not be so bad.
Argh!!!!!!!!!!!

you know gene when we first got to florida it was always fun to rib the friends back up north cove this time of year, but after 10 years it just normal every day is a shorts and sandals maybe a sweatshirt in the morning but that comes off around 10 I don't even think of it being winter really . like before when life shut down and the boat got covered up . Virginia id hate it being cold and no snow. I used to hate waiting for snow to go snowmobililng. seems like once it got to be good riding the snow would melt and it was march
Today I was in the garage sewing with just shorts on. I was getting hot and sweating so I took off my t-shirt.
Someday I predict that Florida will have a large population of upholsterers and a shortage elsewhere in the USA. :)
Chris
QuoteI was getting hot and sweating so I took off my t-shirt.
I was getting hot and sweating walking my dog this morning so I took off my gloves, took off my skull cap, took off my outer coat, took off my down vest, put my outer coat back on without the hood up, and carried my down vest home along with the dog poop bag.
Do you transplants to Florida miss the changing seasons? I've heard that's one big issue for a lot of folks.
In North/South Carolina they have "half wayers". These are folks who moved to Florida from the north, mainly New England, missed the seasons, and moved half way back north to the Carolinas.
Tim: I've always said that if I could afford to fly my kids to Hawaii on a private jet anytime they wanted to come and visit, I would be living in Hawaii. I've met a lot of folks in Hawaii who moved there and had to turn their beautiful homes into B&Bs to help pay the bills.
I have a customer who built a retirement home in Key West and then realized that the grand kids are here in Ohio. They gave up their plans of living in Key West full time.

ya a guys got to move if he wants before the kids have kids , I had a guy last year who just moved anyway
me I don't miss the seasons. ya fall was nice if you liked flannel shirts and fairs but then came winter and however much I like snowmobiling it didn't equal up to boating sitting on the patio bbqing and mowing the lawn even , gebe there are aot of people here who live in the house you never seen them outside these are probable the halfbackers they likew shopping from the house to the car to the mall as long as the drivings good and the heater works

............ I would be living in Hawaii. I've met a lot of folks in Hawaii who moved there and had to turn their beautiful homes into B&Bs to help pay the bills.
We have some friends who moved to Hawaii. The wife was a special ed. teacher. She was offered a 2 year contract in Hawaii at more than twice her normal salary. The husband found a job there that also paid much better than he was used to making here.
So they thought they would essentially make some extra money for taking a 2 year vacation in Hawaii.............It didn't work out that way.
The cost of living there was so high, all they could afford for housing was a run down shack amongst the native villagers. They decided to just make the best of it, and for 2 years, they basically lived like tribesmen.
Those 2 years ended up being the happiest years of their lives. No pressure to "Keep up with the Joneses". Materialistic things weren't important. They had food and shelter, and little else.
If you ask them now, they refer to that little village in Hawaii as their "home town".
A friend of mine, who to say he's a "free spirit" would be an understatement, moved to Hawaii. Long story short, he bought two shipping containers to move himself to New Zealand, stopped in HI for a few weeks to sort out immigration and stayed. He bought an overgrown coffee plantation on the west side of the mountains. He lived out of his containers for two years because, "It rains every d@mmed afternoon" and that slowed his home construction. He also said a lot of the people he met would not have everyone in the family leave their property at the same time because of the crime there. Go figure. Ever do any internet shopping and see "prices higher in Alaska and Hawaii?" I believe it as almost everything has to be shipped in.
No snow in Brandon yet although we had had a couple of flakes. There is snow on the ground east of here about an hour and I've heard they got some north of here around Riding Mountain national park. Again about an hours drive. But cold!!! Holy crud. Minus 10 c right now. I think I heard the radio say 18 F. (I've got to start flipping my thermometer over to F before I post on these threads LOL)
Darren C just sounds too dang cold anyway -10C :(
I got on the internet mid nineties and started looking at the mls's in florida. saw I could sell my house a by a netter place for 1/2 the money and I can work all year no brainer
Your right Mike. I just flipped my thermometer and 13.5 F does feel alot warmer than -10.3 C.

QuoteI've got to start flipping my thermometer over to F before I post on these threads
Darren, just keep reporting in C without the "C" and we'll all have more pity for you. :)
One conspiracy that I buy into is that I believe the primary reason the US of A did not switch to metric including C is that there has and is a big political movement to dumb down our citizens and this switching would not be in the best interest of this endeavor.
3" of snow yesterday and a high of 23 F today here in SW Ohio. (That's -5 C for those counting.)
I've thrown snowballs on top of Mauna Kia - the Big Island of Hawaii. Drive down the mountain in your 4 wheel drive rental, through the lava fields, and to the beach where it's 80 degrees. Not a big issue for those of you who live in the mountain states. But for me here in Hamilton County where the highest elevation point is Rumke Dump, that was a pretty unique experience.
gene
Rainy and windy yesterday. Forecast today is lower 50's and 23* tonight. That's coooold in north central Florida.
That kind of low in Florida does get your attention!

Gene:
I will admit I miss certain parts of the winter. I was an avid rabbit hunter and can remember going out hunting after a fresh snow. I would walk the fence rows and then end up walking into the woods, sit down and lean against a tree and just veg. The woods would be silent and it was some of the peaceful times I have had in my life.
I remember going out to the barn to feed the animals on a winter morning when my Ex and I had the farm. I can still see the breath coming out of the horses nostrils. I would feed the goats, cattle and horses and would sit inside the barn and Veg with the animals. For some reason listening to the cattle and horses breath and hearing nothing else was calming.
Spring was my favorite time of year in Michigan and I enjoyed the fall colors ( till the frigging leaves started falling and I had to rake them up ). The fall is when we took the kids to the cider mill for fresh cider and plain donuts.
So many good memories up there in Michigan but to be honest my body can no longer handle the cold.
Chris
A funny story.
My wife spent most of her life living on the Northern beaches of Sydney, Australia. She seen a dusting up in the Snowy Mountains in Victoria but that was it. When we got married we were living in Michigan. The first good snow I was going out to shovel and my wife said " OMG, how beautiful. Let me go out and shovel ". Of course I said have at it and nearly broke my leg getting her the shovel. By the time winter was over she was cussing the snow just as if she was born in Michigan.
In regards to expensive, Australia is out of this world costly as compared to the USA. Real estate prices are insane and everything else costs a fortune from clothes to cars to gas. Even shoes are outrageous. My wife was shocked at the prices here in the States when she first came over. When I retired I agreed to move to Australia but she refused. In her words " we could never live the lifestyle in Oz like we do here so lets stay in the USA. "
The last I checked Sydney was # 2 on the list for the most expensive city in the world, right behind Tokyo.

And anything else you didn't plug in LOL. Forty below = minus forty, so somewhere around -30 C. Never mind "don't lick the bumper/flagpole etc"... if there is any wind chill at all with that, do not even pee near one!!! We get an average of 7-14 days of that and less down here over the winter. Up north; that's nothing. Bully for them---I want no part of -65 with the windchill, thank you very much! I'd also have a hard time with an Oz winter. After that heat they could send my corpse and my teeth back in the same "cup" my dentures came in.
HAVE YOU SEEN THE BEATING BUFFALO HAS BEEN HANDED?! Holy experlative; 6 feet already and another 1-2 expected before the system moves out [shocked] . Bear in mind that that is the wet heavy lake affect snow off the great lakes. By the time they dug down to June or me (both a titch short of 6 ft.) they would have probably displaced our body weight in snow.
I saw a photo chris posted on FB 72" on the newyord parkway wow oh btw chris when I retire it will not be like you lol

Darren, do they make snorkels that long? I'd need one about 16 inches. Still it's crazy what those poor people are dealing with. I can't even imagine. I've only seen snow once in my life when I was in Detroit for a business trip (industry show) back in the 1990's. It was amazing!... just a light sprinkling.
June
I saw pictures of Buffalo last night. Absolutely crazy. Like 5+ feet of snow on the top of cars. Will that much heavy snow cause hardtops to buckle?
Much of our snow has melted. We expect to be in the upper 40's/lower 50's Sat/Sun. So goes life in Nebraska.
Virginia
QuoteDarren, do they make snorkels that long? I'd need one about 16 inches.
Ha-Ha. No, 'cause despite Hollywood showing people breathing through 3 or 4 feet of bamboo, the max. length you can actually breath through is only around a foot. [It's been a while since I took my scuba course---can't remember if it's 11" or 13" ]
QuoteI've only seen snow once in my life---It was amazing!.
It can be---snow shoeing, snowball fights, skiing, snowmobiles etc...It can also be a P.I.T.A. Picture taking a friends sedan down to the beach next trip (your 4 wheel drive is cheating) and driving across the sand for the length of a morning commute. [BTW everyone else can't stop or steer well either]. Now remove 2" of sand the size of your parking lot at home and the area of your walkway to the door. Do this a couple of times a week or until the hole is now knee deep ( or mid thigh---
teasing). BY March it starts getting REAL old.
I was only half listening to the news today but Buffalo and the rest of the area are supposed to get well above freezing very soon. The big threat now is where is that water supposed to go? Snow is an excellent insulator + it melts from the top down. So at some point that melting snow will run down through all the air spaces that make snow such a great insulator until it hits the layer that is still below freezing and become ice. Water does not pass through ice = the store drain system is "compromised ". They have to QUICKLY open access to as many street grates as possible and hope their system can move that volume of water, and haul as much solid snow away as possible before it melts. God speed and good luck to those "in the breach".
Sorry to be so long winded, but some of our members have no experience with snow/melt/run off etc... I may have a bit more "first-hand" from up here for them.
We're having a heat wave. It went to plus 7 * C (45 F) today. Forecast is for just above freezing tomorrow and just minus for Sunday with 60 % chance of flurries. SIGH-- then we go below normal again to start the week.
I just bought a pair of outboard motors from a guy in SC so my shipper just left wensday with a boat headed to new York then after the holiday next week will return and pick up the motors today he said he hit new York snow and 19 degrees f
Just cold and really windy (NW=cold and dry). Living on the Atlantic coast means that "wind off the water" usually means rain/"wintery mix" but not much snow. We often have winters that are "green" or winters where accumulated snowfall melts away before the next round.
