General Discussion / Re: Bolster clips again
October 23, 2014, 06:30:21 pm
I haven't bought any in a long time, but last I got I think was from Manart.  They were 1/2".  An online search for "Z" clips will reveal many sources.  If you need some 1/2" asap, pm me your address and how many you need.  I have probably 10 or 15 laying around.

It's front page news on CNN, FOXNews and NBCNews (on-line, I don't get hard-copy papers).  My condolences to the families.  Terrible news.  I'm afraid Canada's welcoming immigration policies may be about to bite her in the arse, unfortunately.  This is the reward you get for being a refuge.  Bastards!  At least one got his just desserts.

General Discussion / Re: Wanna go for a rip?

That's about 1.5 hours north of me.  Spent my day doing lawn work.  It's been one RAINY fall and everything is growing out of hand.  Ready for winter when the growing slows down.

I saw that thread Mike - you titled it "for the boaters" or something like that.  And I see it's gone.  ???  It wasn't really off-topic - it was about your flip-down t-top extension (which I think is really kool, especially on those CC's with teeny little t-tops).

Beautiful countryside, Darren.  Thanks for posting those.  I'm always amazed when driving long distances or flying over the central part of this country at just how BIG it is.  Seems to go on forever.  One trip I've always wanted to make was the transcontinental train they run (if they still do) from the east to west coast of southern Canada.  I'm sure parts would be monotonous, but I'd still love to do it.

Beware of hiring help - you may be training your competition.  However, depending on where you are and the market there, it might be a good thing.  If nothing else, hiring a high-schooler part time to pull staples or sweep up can increase your productivity.  I started out working till 10 or 11 at night, sometimes pulling staples on the living room floor watching TV till very late.

So your issue is getting work out, not generating sales?  Good problem to have.  Good luck with the start-up!

General Discussion / Re: Wier (Spelling) Manufacturing
September 26, 2014, 07:54:56 am
I've never heard of Wier Manufacturing.  I'm also not familiar with the term "pantone top".  What is that?  Did they originally produce the top?  Or did they manufacture the fabric?

It sounds like this was a warranty repair where the customer has paid no money to anyone.  If he did give the boat shop any money he needs to demand it back from them.  Then he could pay you directly.  If no money has changed hands, I'd contact Wier directly to see if you can get paid and if not, I'd take the boat shop to small claims for whatever they owe you (assuming you're not successful with the shop owner).

I like boating and fishing, but still, in spite of my everyday activities, enjoy sewing.  The creative outlet is very satisfying.  Other than that, I love gardening.  I'm currently into hybrid hibiscus.  They're high-maintenance compared to garden variety hibiscus, but gorgeous when they're happy.

Awwww.  Sorry to hear she's not 100%.  Hopefully the meds will fix her up.  I have to agree with you though in not putting her through tests if there's no point in putting her through surgery.  If the test shows nothing you're no-where.  If it does show something, what's the solution?  In these parts, exploratory surgery on a medium sized dog runs anywhere from 5 to 7 grand.  As much as I love my dogs, that's not an option but we pet owners know it's a tough call.

Kool!  I wonder if any boat owners would like some bling on their canvas?  :D  Truly, most would not, but in Miami, who knows!

General Discussion / Re: Jobs in canvas/upholstery

Now that's just nuts - a boat with a walk-through windshield and covers that don't let you do it.  Are zippers hard to come by there?  What a pain it would be to put those on and off with no outside walkways to do all the fasteners.

I was amazed at the Fairline canvas I just replaced where the edges of the canvas were not turned under - just cut and sewn to the clear vinyl.   And as I understand it, Fairline is a premium brand.

And in the US we can pay an individual up to $600 a year with no paperwork.  If they earn more than that, they have to fill out a form with their tax id (usually a Social Security number) and the "employer" has to file a form (a 1099) at the end of the year saying who they paid and how much and give the ID #.  No escaping this.  Even PayPal sends out 1099's at the end of the year if you've collected more than $600 through online sales.

Of course, you can pay anyone however much you want - just know you're on the hook for their employment taxes if you ever get audited - even if they weren't an employee.

General Discussion / Re: have you ever seen canvas rot
August 28, 2014, 08:05:31 pm
Never saw anything like that.  I've seen pelican poop eat holes in canvas (uric acid) and rats chew holes in canvas, and iguanas shred it with their claws, but obviously the way you can rip it with two fingers indicates a mfg. issue.

Thanks, Dede.  A 1/4" barrel isn't going to cut it.  I need a full 3/8 eyelet.  I'd go with 1/2" if they made such a beast.  I have one other local source I'm going to try tomorrow.  I'll let you know.

I think a lot of us are "mutts".  I don't even know what I am - my grandma delivered me in my mom's bedroom and the family tree is hear-say since there are few or no official birth records.
