General Discussion / Re: Question on Pullers
November 26, 2014, 04:31:35 pm
That's why I've pretty much given up canvas.  I just can't deal with the weight through the machine.  My left shoulder is almost back to normal but the rotator cuff is pretty delicate.  I find that if I hold a coffee mug (empty) at my left side, then try to lift it to shoulder height - straight out to the side in line with my body - I can sometimes get it up there, sometimes not.  Kills me because I've always been very strong for my size and height.  Sucks getting old.

Anyway, have your wife photo/video you at your machine sewing.  Look for faults in your posture and motions.  You maybe doing this to yourself a bit.  I was, simply by having my seat too low.  My left shoulder was hunched up higher than my colllar bone, aggravating the problem.  I also was using my left elbow to hold/push canvas through the machine.  I'd bind the fabric to the table with the elbow and hold or push.  Be very conscious of your position and motions.  You probably ARE now that you're in pain.

Have fun with that Suzi.  :D  Every once in a while I get the urge to sew something domestic - except that my walking foot machines don't do chintz or anything approaching it.  I'd never try something as delicate as chiffon or voile.

Sailrite has a wholesale branch called "Lowell Distributing".  They discount the retail price for people with a resale certificate.  Inquire if you buy from them regularly.

Whats that in C freeze your butt off ?

By the time they dug down to June or me (both a titch short of 6 ft.)   they would have probably displaced our body weight in snow.

Darren, do they make snorkels that long?  I'd need one about 16 inches.  Still it's crazy what those poor people are dealing with.  I can't even imagine.  I've only seen snow once in my life when I was in Detroit for a business trip (industry show) back in the 1990's.  It was amazing!... just a light sprinkling.

Probably Ultraleather.  It comes in several finishes.

I'm driving a 12 year old Toyota 4Runner and I still love it.  Crazy reliable.  I do love my old car.  But I don't do furniture, I do marine so the pieces are mostly smaller than sofas and recliners.  I can get a 4x8 sheet of Starboard in there but no way can I close the tail end.  Use bungees and surface streets - no highways with that stuff loaded.

Can't live without my classic rock.  But I love everything from swing to Louis Armstrong, soul, R&B, reggae - everything but rap (yeah, it has rhythm but no melody) and elevator music because it puts me to sleep.  I can read music and play the piano but only because I was forced to learn as a child.  No real talent in that regard.

I just set the phone down.  No need to hang up or talk - just put it down and forget it for 5 minutes.  When you go back to it they're gone  :o

The Business Of Upholstery / Re: Computer Issue
November 06, 2014, 06:30:34 am
I'm shopping for a new one myself.  Can't get by without a working computer.

Last week mine just quit.  Then it refused to boot at all so I had to bring it up in safe mode and run a CHKDSK /R (check disk with repair) that ran for 7 hours.  It found two bad sectors on the disk and removed them from circulation.  So it's running now, but I have no confidence that it will continue to run.

I've never had a virus - I have AVAST (free download) running so it prevents malware from loading when I go to some website.  Those side-bar ads you see on many websites contain viruses.  I just recently had it block one from weather.com.  I've also seen them from major news sites like CNN and MSN.  I highly recommend AVAST.

I don't get it...  When I moved to my current home 15 years ago with an 11 year-old daughter, I assumed since it was a family neighborhood that there'd be LOTS of trick-or-treat'ers.   Only a few that first year.  In the years since, I could count all of them on one hand.  15 years, lots of kids around, no one comes to the door, in spite decorations and lots of outdoor lights for safety.  Go figure.  I don't bother buying candy anymore.  Just a few miles north of me a friend has 100-150 plus come to the door.  ??

General Discussion / Re: Boat Dock Revisited
October 31, 2014, 06:25:09 pm
Oh good grief....  I'd give these guys the boot if you can afford to do so.  I've only "fired" one or two customers in my time, but it was well-deserved and didn't hurt my business a bit.  One was a marina that was nailing the manufacturer for warranty repairs and wanting to pay me pennies - and wanting me to give them two invoices - one they'd show to the boat mfg (high $) and another low $ they'd pay me.  Really???!!!  Bye bye.  I don't play that game.

Hold your ground.  If they have other options, let them take them.  Sooner or later they'll burn every bridge in the territory and be sol for getting things done.

Gorgeous October here in SoFla.  Our temps are more like late November.  Today it hit 82.  It'll be in the mid 80's all week with another cold front on the weekend.  Our leaves don't change colors, the license plates do.

I'd try a 22 diamond point.

Sounds to me like the needle is too small.  If you were sewing only fabric a 19 needle would be fine.  But I'm betting the needle leaves the hole in the plastic a bit sharp and that's causing the thread to shred and snap.  The smaller size of the hole aggravates the problem.  Also, if your thread is old, it doesn't have the tensile strength of a new spool.  Make sure your thread is fresh.
