Has anyone ever seen something like this before?

The bottom of each cushion (there are 7) has four pockets (one in each corner) with a snap on them, open on one end so you can get a couple of fingers in there to snap it onto the boat.
Couple of questions: How do I ensure the snaps end up exactly where they should be?
And what do you guys use to mark on white textilene/mesh?
Thanks in advance!
Jo

General Discussion / Worst Seats Ever?
March 30, 2012, 01:03:52 pm
It seems like I say this every time I get some seats to cover, but these seem like the worst ever. And not just because of the degree of decomposition or the smell, but the sheer ugliness. These come from a 1976 Baja.

You must see them in person to really appreciate the hideousness. Seems like if they're making a fast boat like that, they would've made the seats sleeker. These things weigh a ton, too.

General Discussion / Exam Tables
March 17, 2012, 06:44:36 am
Hey guys,
I'm just starting some exam tables for an oncology clinic. The cover was originally constructed with no boxing, just darts sewn at the corners. These corners are where the wear started over the years. The customer wants to know if there is such a thing as a cap for the corner? Has anyone ever heard of this? Also, I've thought about just doing the table with boxing, but I don't know if this is normal protocol for an exam table. (This is my first time).

The Business Of Upholstery / Contracts
February 28, 2012, 02:16:59 pm
Hey everybody!
I just got a gig covering all the exam tables for an oncology clinic. They've chosen the fabric, and we're ready to go, but they want me to submit a contract/proposal. I've never had to do this before. Does anyone have maybe a template/sample contract they would let me look at?
Thanks much.

Hey everyone. I want to mount my roll of welt cord behind my sewing machine. I had envisioned a homemade rig of two hook arms that came out about six or eight inches from the wall with a piece of conduit between that the welt could just roll off of.
I went to Home Depot today and couldn't find what I was looking for. Does anyone know what I mean and what those arms are called? I looked in the closet hardware section and nothing extends that far out. Or is there a simpler solution?
Currently I keep the roll on the floor next to me as I sew, but it doesn't unwind smoothly and keeps getting snagged.
Thanks!

General Discussion / Boat Seat Question(s)
November 14, 2011, 02:42:24 pm
I've done tons of boat seats over the years, and all the oem seats I've ever disassembled have flannel backed vinyl, yet I've never seen flannel backed marine vinyl available on the market...does anyone know why? I'm thinking that the backing is more forgiving, especially around curves / bolsters.
Another question: Wondering how many of you routinely use sew foam when making new boat seat covers?
Thanks for you input!

General Discussion / Customer on a Really Tight Budget
October 18, 2011, 09:39:17 am
Hi guys, I need some opinions. I have a customer who needs both a cover and her seats done on a pontoon. She thinks she can only do one or the other, so she's thinking of getting the seats done and using giant tarps (the boat's at her house) to cover it for the winter. I don't predict this will be successful, as last winter we got tons of snow.
What is the absolute cheapest fabric on the market that would be appropriate for a cover? I'm going to really try to give her a good price on both because she's a super nice lady.
I know it doesn't make the best business sense to do people favors, but I'm making an exception just this once.
Thanks!

General Discussion / Questions for My Furniture Peeps
September 24, 2011, 03:31:41 pm
I'm not a furniture person, but I want to put some new fabric on my own couch. The seat cushions are loose, but the back cushions are attached. First question: why? Do manufacturers do this to save fabric? (It's a sectional, btw). Second question: Is there any reason why I can't convert the back cushions into loose cushions also? Thanks!

Hey everybody! I am doing Bayliner seats; sewed over a busy intersection of piping and numerous layers of vinyl around a curve and caught some of the seat fabric in the seam that I didn't mean to. Ripped the seam and re-sewed, and now there are a few visible needle holes in the vinyl.
I REALLY don't want to replace the whole section. Is there any way to fill in those holes? They aren't too bad; maybe they're only glaringly obvious to me, but it still bugs.
Thanks,
Jo

General Discussion / Awning Fabrics Back in the Day
August 23, 2011, 06:45:46 am
Good Morning Everybody!

I got a call from a woman about making a replacement awning. She insists that her current awning is not Sunbrella (at least not as we know it today). She said it's really thick and heavy, and it lasted a full 20 years, without ever being taken down for the winter (we are in Northeast PA). I do believe her, as I remember having an awning on the house I grew up in, and it lasted about 20 years.

Does anybody know what fabricators might have been using 20-30 years ago for awnings? Is it possible that heavy cotton canvas can last that long? Can Sunbrella last this long in these conditions year round?

Hi All,
Does anyone know where to get those hinges that join the seat bottom to the back? It's an 8" hinge. I thought they'd have it at Lowe's, but they didn't.
Thanks,
Jo

How do you sew a reinforcement patch on a boat cover in an area where there are a lot of darts? The area I want to tape the patch to won't lay flat.  Should I have put the reinforcement material on before I darted?
Thanks again, guys, you are lifesavers!

Hey guys,
So I'm *trying* to make a cover for this fishing boat which has a lot going on: a trolling motor, a windshield on one side only, and two bows. The back bow is taller than the front bow, and the windshield is in the middle.

I'm in the process of putting the snaps in, and there is a dip (no matter how tight I pull the fabric) in between the windshield and the back bow.

The fabric is pulled as taut as possible fore and aft. What should I do? A pole? Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong? Thanks in advance!
Oh,  in case you can't see the pics, here's a link to the album:

General Discussion / Pop Up Camper Fabric

Has anyone ever replaced pop up camper canvas? Any pitfalls I should know about? How about a source for the fabric? Thanks!

Hey guys,
I "screwed" up and put a snap where I shouldn't have. What's the proper procedure for filling in the hole?
Thanks,
Jo

General Discussion / Darn Trolling Motor!
July 29, 2011, 04:22:39 am
So this is my next cover project:

I've never done one like this...what do you do when you get to the trolling motor? I think the propeller flips to the inside?

Just wondering, when you guys install snaps on a boat cover, do you pull the canvas as tight as you can? Should you have to struggle a bit to get the cover on? (The fabric is Sunbrella). Or do you leave a slight amount  of give?
