Anyone ever do v-berth cushions like this? In vinyl?

How would you handle the bolster?
Thanks for any and all input.

General Discussion / Slipcover question for Bobbin
March 22, 2011, 05:59:59 am
Hi Bobbin,
I noticed from the archives that you are very experienced in slipcovers, so here goes: How would you approach this?

Would you put a boxing strip on the top? Or just a piece for the outside back sewn to the piece for the inside back?
The customer wants it as fitted as possible, with one piece on the inside back. The back cushions are attached, and when I place the fabric over the inside back, all the lines telegraph through the fabric.
I've done 4 slipcovers before, but those sofas were more straightforward than this.

General Discussion / pontoon seats
March 16, 2011, 12:55:22 pm
Hi Guys,
I'm working on some pontoon seats, and sewing them up as original, with a piece of stretcher canvas sewn into the seam where the welt is. Here is a pic of the loose cover:

The foam is in two pieces:

When I stapled the stretcher down, it looked like the welt was buried too far down, and you couldn't really get the full effect of the stripes. (Sorry I didn't get a pic of the stapled cover; I was so dissatisfied with the results I pulled the staples out immediately.

My question is:
Do I really need the stretcher? And if I don't, should I glue the two pieces of foam together?   :-\Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / It's Always Something
March 08, 2011, 04:49:27 pm
This is a console/armrest from a pontoon boat that the owner "repaired". I made a cover (with my new kick-ass sewing machine), and when I pulled it over, you can see all the bumps from the metal right through the vinyl.
Is there something appropriate I can put on before I put the fabric on to smooth it out?
Thanks,
Jo

General Discussion / Gregg Is The Man!
March 07, 2011, 03:00:23 pm
Finally got in the car and drove the 2 1/2 hours to Keystone Sewing Machine Co., and came home with a brand new Highlead GC0618!

I've never had a brand new (industrial) machine before, and can't wait to get to work!
Anyway, I recommend Gregg for all your sewing machine needs. He's extremely knowledgable and took the time to answer all my questions.

Hi guys,
I tripped the safety clutch thing, and to get it right you're supposed to push the button on the bed (the one on the right) and turn the handwheel away from you until the lever goes back into the notch. Except when I try to turn the handwheel with the button pushed it won't budge. How can I do this manually?
I can see what's supposed to happen, I just don't know what screw (or screws) to loosen to get it done.
Can anyone help? Much appreciation for your time and effort,
Jo

General Discussion / How Long Am I Gonna Be A Newbie?

On this board, I mean. I've been registered here since 2005. Does it go by the number of posts?

Does anybody have any experience with this brand of machine? I currently have an ancient singer 111w155, which is good, but it doesn't have reverse, and has repair issues from time to time.

This seems like a pretty good deal; it includes the table and servo motor.

Would you guys advise buying this? Thanks,
Joanne

The Business Of Upholstery / Marketing
January 26, 2011, 09:49:53 am
Hi Everyone,

I just moved to Pennsylvania from California a few months ago. I put an ad in the classifieds for a couple of weeks, hand out business cards everywhere I go, have an ad on craigslist services section, and post my flyer on any bulleting board I see. I have gotten a few jobs, but not enough to make a living.

I know that word of mouth is the best way to get business, but I want to expedite the process. Any suggestions? I have experience in upholstery, auto, marine and commercial.  How can I get business quickly? I tried working for someone else for $10 an hour, and it was awful; it killed me to do big jobs by myself and only get $10 an hour! Plus, the guy was a giant a**hole.

The demand is here; just having trouble finding it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

A few months ago, I recovered 3 booth seats for a local Indian restaurant. They are very nice people, by the  way. The guy who recovered them before me went out of business and so did the local fabric store that supplied the vinyl. I had a heck of a time finding a match; poured over tons of sample books. I ended up telling the guy that I couldn't find an exact match, but something very close. Close enough that no one would ever notice, especially in the dim lighting of the restaurant.
Anyway, they ended up looking great, and if there was a problem, I was never told about it. Almost all the other seats need recovering as well, but they never contacted me about finishing.
We ate there the other day, and actually sat in the booth that I recovered. Then I noticed that some other booths had the ugly no-sew package wrapped job.
I mean, it is really unsightly.
So, I can't figure out what went wrong....did the guy think I charged too much? I actually barely made a profit because the vinyl was more expensive than I had anticipated. Was he unhappy with the color match? Should I send the guy a sales letter reminding him I'm here?
I've never had a problem like this before. I know it's not that the sewing job is unsatisfactory - it's a simple  booth seat, and it's nice and tight.
Any insight? thanks in advance!

General Discussion / Has anyone ever repaired a flag?
December 02, 2010, 08:46:12 am
What kind of thread should be used? Will my Singer 111w155 eat the nylon fabric, or should I used a home sewing machine for this? The edge of the flag is really tattered and deteriorated...should I use a narrow hem? Thanks in advance,
Jo

Hi everyone, I am in desperate need of mechanical help. My alternating presser feet are out of alignment, and as a result the machine binds. When I loosen the screw to adjust the inner foot, it drops down, and you can move it to whatever height you want to and then tighten the screw. Trouble is, I don't know where to move it. I've tried several different positions and some are better than others, but it still binds. Should I be adjusting the outer foot also? And how do you do that? I have the military manual from the tpub website, but am having trouble understanding the procedure.
I'm fairly certain that the machine is timed properly because despite the binding it does make a nice stitch.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,
I have a very old Singer 111w155, and there should be 1/2" under the presser foot, but there is barely 1/4"! Can anyone tell me how to adjust this? Thanks!

General Discussion / Need help identifying this fabric!
September 10, 2010, 08:11:59 am
Hi
I need to replace a section of a pool cover (about a 4' x 4' section). Am I going to be able to find this exact type of mesh? If not, can I replace it with a different type that may not match exactly? What would you guys do?
Thanks!
Jo
