General Discussion / Boat seats
September 03, 2011, 03:05:22 pm
Boat seats that any furniture upholster can do.

With all the worms and fish guts flying around I would suggest arm guards.

General Discussion / Ouch!
August 31, 2011, 06:42:32 pm
I've been home all day with a pinched nerve in my back. Talk about a pain in the butt!

I did a solid 8 hours of paper work, though. Got caught up on everything and a bit ahead on a few other things.

I'll probably be home again tomorrow.

Anyone else have this malady? From what I read I'm lucky it's not worst. I can't stand without pain, but at least I can sit without pain.

Well, maybe not the spam.

A woman snuggles up to her husband and says, "I want you to whisper dirty things to me in my ear."

The husband leans over and whispers, "Kitchen, bathroom, living room."

Can anyone look at this video and not smile?

There is a sofa in the video so it is, kinda, upholstery related, maybe, sort of, well, maybe not really.

General Discussion / What is this chair?
June 30, 2011, 08:01:40 pm
Hello,

I mentioned in a previous post that I am going to start looking for unique pieces of furniture, reupholster them with muslin, then sell them to interior designers, or anyone else, for a price that includes the chair and my labor to cover in their fabric.

Do you know what the name of this chair is? It's in an estate sale, and they are calling it an Eastlake style parlor chair. The description implies that the springs in the deck need redone and the back is loose and needs work, redone probably. They say the wood is in good condition.

I cannot see from any of their picture what the back legs look like.

If I can find the name of this chair I can check out other places to see what it might be worth. I looked through google images and ebay with no success.

This guy wants to put a Bimini top on his boat. I told him I don't do boats. I also don't do airplanes either.

General Discussion / joining decorative welt cord
June 26, 2011, 12:28:55 pm
Some folks have asked about this in the past. I came across this photo. This is how I do it. I always put tape on the end of each cord so it does not unravel.

One critical point is how you cut the lip. This picture does a good job of showing how to cut the lip. Get that right, and wrapping the individual cords over each other is rather easy.

I do love it when I do it right. For me it took practise.

Good luck,

General Discussion / The Gathering
June 25, 2011, 02:25:12 pm
Hello,

My Juki LU-562 has decided to gather the fabric when I sew. If my shop were beside a river I would be singing 'Shall We Gather at the River'.

This would be great for a gathered skirt, but I would really like to just sew straight stitches on flat fabric.

When I turn the wheel by hand slowly, I can see the needle goes down with the walking foot. They both go back, away from me, then they both come up and travel toward me.

When the needle comes up and travels toward me, I can see that the thread is pulling the fabric back toward the needle, creating the ruffle.

What did I do to cause this and what can I do to fix it?

Thank you,

Gene

General Discussion / Cornice board
June 21, 2011, 04:08:48 am
I need to put a 2" contrast fabric banding along the bottom face of a cornice board. The bottom edge is curved. What technique do you use to do this?

Thank you,

I had a sewing project. I asked a seamstress, who I've known for a few years, to do the work. She gave me a price, I said OK.

She left me a message this morning that said she started the job and it was going to be more work than she thought, so she is going to charge me an hourly rate. She told me how much per hour she was going to charge me.

I called her back and told her to stop everything. I went to her house and picked up the entire work. I paid her what she said I owed her for the few hours she had already put into it.

I have no intentions of working with this lady again.

If we have an agreement, and if either of us wants to change that agreement, we talk about it. If we agree to raise the price, we have a new agreement. And there are times when I do raise the price because there are unseen issues that come up. This is not uncommon for me, as we all know. If I will not raise the price, and you will not do the work, then we have a new agreement.

What this lady did was to change the price without asking me, or even talking to me. She went from a fixed price to a blank check. Not bad for her, huh?

And the irony is that my customer, the homeowner, does not care about the price. She wants the work done, and done well. I could have easily gone back to her and told her that it would be more expensive. She would have said OK.

I think this lady was dishonest and unethical. I think she saw an opportunity for a short term gain and went for it. Now, there is no 'long term' with me.

Any thoughts on this issue, other subcontractor issues, and the issue of burning a bridge with someone?

Not as useful as my stripbit, but it is pretty kool!.

I don't think I need to suggest that you DO NOT wear a tie while running this machine. I wouldn't even do a Michael Jordan and stick my tongue out.

And if you think this video is not furniture related, take a look at 3' 45" on the video.

FYI: Why is bird poop white? Unlike mammals, birds don't urinate. Their kidneys extract nitrogenous wastes from the bloodstream, but instead of excreting it as urea dissolved in urine as we do, they excrete it in the form of uric acid. Uric acid has a very low solubility in water, so it emerges as a white paste. This material, as well as the output of the intestines, emerges from the bird's cloaca. The cloaca is a multi-purpose hole for birds: their wastes come out of it, they have sex by putting their cloacas together, and females lay eggs out of it.

It's great when you can cut 76" of bias strips for your fabric. (This is the longest length on a 54" bolt of fabric if you cut at a 45 degree angle.)

But sometimes I need to cut on the bias and I also need to conserve as much of the fabric as possible because I just don't have much excess fabric to waste.

This is how I figure out exactly how much fabric I need for my welt cord:

Example:

I have a sofa that needs 950" of welt cord. I am going to cut the fabric on the bias.

My fabric is 54" wide.

My welt cord strips of fabric will be 1 1/2" wide.

54" divided into 950" = 17.6

I need 17.6 strips of fabric. I round up to 18 strips of fabric.

18 x 1 1/2" = 27".

If I cut 27" of my 54" wide fabric, and cut this on the bias, I will have my 950" of fabric for my welt cord.

If you can't get a laugh, try giving one away.

A man walks into a hotel elevator. He is in a very big hurry. He reaches over to hit the button for the lobby floor and his elbow pokes a lady right in her breast.

Very embarrassed the man says, "Madame, I do apologize for such an unfortunate accident. I do trust that if your heart is as soft as your breast, you will indeed accept my apology."

The woman says, "Kind sir. I do indeed accept your apology. And if your penis is as hard as your elbow, I'm in room 212."

General Discussion / Torsion spring
May 27, 2011, 02:39:51 pm
This is not related to upholstery directly, other than the fact that I am an upholsterer so anything that I do is related to upholstery indirectly.

Many folks on this forum are Do It Yourself folks, and often times that means DIY as much for the fun of it as to save a few bucks. Many of us just love finding out how things work.

I replaced the torsion spring on my garage door. This is the big spring that is over the door, not the tension springs that run across the ceiling on the sides of the door.

Here's a web site that was very helpful to me. I have no idea why this guy took all the time and trouble to put this together, but I am very grateful that he did.

General Discussion / customer service
May 18, 2011, 04:39:39 pm
The Loose Pressure Foot topic started by Calzone got into a discussion of customer service.
I thought I would start a new thread on this topic.

I made two extremely large cornice boards for a law office on the 27th floor of a downtown building. I had an installer install them last week and I went along to help. The designer was there. The first thing she pointed out was that the bottom of these cornice boards should have been curved, not straight.

I made a mistake. A BIGGGGGG mistake. My first response was that I would make them right. She knows me and she knows I would not hesitate to take them back and make them right.

Bottom line is that she asked us to install one, and then the other. They did look great. The owner of the law firm came out and the designer explained what happened and the owner wanted them just as they were. I was extremely grateful.

Yes, it saved me time and money by having them accept them as they were. In this situation, with this designer, I believe it would have cost me a lot more money in the long term if I had tried to justify or excuse away my mistake.

General Discussion / walking foot sewing machine
May 18, 2011, 04:04:29 pm
Hello,

universal feed = feed dog, pressure foot, and needle pull the material along with each stitch

I have a Juki LU 562. It's new for me. Recently serviced.

I was sewing a boxed cushion cover today. 90" x 30" panel.

I made the welt cord. I sewed the welt cord on top of the fabric. The length and width of the panel lost several inches when I measured it on the cutting table.

I took the welt cord off. I sewed the panel of fabric on top of the welt cord. It took 11 extra inches of welt cord.

When I sewed the welt cord on top of the panel, I lost 11 inches in overall edge.

I thought the purpose of a universal feed was to take the material through at the same time? Am I doing something wrong? Is there something that I can adjust? Is this just the nature of this machine?

It seems like I actually may loose less dimension when I sew with my straight stitch machine.

Thank you for your help.

I don't remember where this original thread was, but the question was asked if anyone sews cording into the fabric to make the welt cord.

I was making cornice boards today and I was putting welt cord along the bottom of the cornice boards.

I cut strips of fabric 3 1/2" wide, sew them together on the diagonal, then sew the cording into the fabric to make welt cord that has a wide lip on it. I then staple the welt cord along the bottom edge, put chip strip on top of the welt cord to give it a straight line, then pull that wide lip across the bottom edge and staple to the back.
