Something Neat Under All That Fabric

Started this (Eastlake?) chair yesterday.

It always erks me when a so called upholsterer gets sloppy with the finished wood. On this arm they completely covered the finished wood for apparently no reason.

I'll upholster it with the wood exposed. This shows the third layer of fabric on this arm.

The outside back was also completely covered from top to bottom and side to side. When I got the cover off I found the remnant of the original back. Even the gimp was still in place and much more wood was exposed. When I saw all those holes I thought, what the heck???

Here is the cool thing and I have never seen this type of tufting before. After taking off two layers of fabric from the inside back I found this original cover.

Another cool thing, the outside buttons were made of solid brass. the inside buttons were covered in the purple fabric. The sad thing is the customer is pinching pennies. So I will be covering over the tufting. Hopefully someday someone will recover it the right way. I'll post the finished pics tomorrow.

I hate to find where the previous upholsterer not only covered some of the finished wood with fabric, either because they didn't know how to do it correctly or because they were saving time, and the finished wood now has staple or tack holes in it.

Was that quilted backrest all sewn together before being applied ?  Will you put it back under the new fabric ?

I left the back in place and added a layer of 1/2 inch foam and a layer of dacron. I didn't take it apart far enough to see if it was sewn together. I could stick my finger into the groove about 1/2 inch but I'm guessing beyond that it must have been sewn. I can't imagine it could be done any other way.

Looks great Kody. I can't tell what sort of fabric. Is it natural, like cotton? Sure looks comfy. Wood looks great, too.

Its linen and your question got me thinking, what is linen? So I looked it up.

Linen is known to be the world's strongest natural fiber and while cotton is from the cotton plant linen is from the flax plant both are natural plant fibers (cellulose) but there are many differences between them.

On my first business trip to Arkansas I saw a field of cotton. I stopped and walked out into the field. This was the first time I saw bolls in person. I was wearing my business suit. A state trouper pulled up behind my car. He asked me what I was doing. I told him I hadn't seen cotton before. He said something like "Be safe. Have a nice day." And he drove off. I'm sure I wasn't the first northerner he saw walking through a cotton field.
