I finished 4 of these chairs. They were challenging, but not extremely difficult with my 9 years of experience. I was amazed how long they took me. And it wasn't just the decorative tacks. Taking down the old fabric took just over an hour each.

I even saved some time: The inside back and the outside back were separate pieces. I was able to use one piece, with the welt cord sewn to the ends, for the entire back, inside and outside.

Anyone know the formal name for this style of chair?

I call them "Banker's chairs". They are commonly seen at banks. Customers sit in them while being turned down for a loan.

They take a little too long for what you can charge. I consider them "low profit" items.

I think this is a very important point to realize in this business. There are some items that simply take too long and most folks are simply not willing to pay that much money for such items.

This chair is one example.

If it's a good customer and it's part of other work, I may do it as a "low profit" item, but I certainly could not make a living off these types of items.

Great work Gene!  It shows how focused you were on the project.

Different folks, different titles for the chair.  Name probably depends on the speaker, a few years ago, as I recall we termed them open barrel back occasional chairs.  Those chairs with good frames are expensive to buy, they will fetch a decent price for rework.

Once the bottom pattern is established the bottoms will go fast.  Getting the pattern might take a second stab.

The tear down and new tack installation are the time eaters.  Don't know how much seat rebuilding was required, that can be some time and materials.  Springs in those, if a recent chair is usually zig zag.  In the old days they were coils.

Good candidate for an UFFY tool or similar?  Usually speed comes on the last one you do.  LOL.

When I worked for Hickory Business Furniture they built a similar chair and called it Bank Of England. They look easy to upholster but are not. Good job Gene.

I remember upholstering a number of those Mid Century Modern Upholstered Stools and had a guy who would build custom frames for my customers. It's been a while since one has crossed my bench.
