Moldy Vinyl & Foam Removal -- Best Approach?

I'm hoping you all may be able to help me with my current issue:

I have been given the task of recovering a "big" upholstery job--26' Pontoon boat, which was never covered since day one.

It is an '05. Needless to say, the vinyl is a bit "shot", but yet still fully in tact. It, of course, is just dull in appearance.

I learned the hard way a few years back that the mold, black, or otherwise, is really not anything one wants to mess with. I almost ended the job with a stay @ the hospital due to respiratory issues. I did go, but managed to not have to stay. What an ordeal that was!

So, I've looked on this site for a quite a while, and can't see anything on the subject.

Can anyone give me any advice on the best approach? The vinyl, believe it or not, looks to be able to be used for a pattern. That is, "if" I can get it off and still be able to work with it.

I don't feel real comfortable using just the standard Lysol, as I really don't think it would take care of it. If there were only a couple pieces, I would do them outside. But, unfortunetely, there are numerous amounts of it to be done.

I've looked @ 3m masks,...... It "looks" to be I would need a "Hepa-Filter" type mask.

Can you tell how you would approach this?

Thank You!

Chris

Good question.  I seem to be getting more sensitive to mold as time goes by, but haven't addressed it yet.  So I'll be looking to others' experience in this area as well.

I do have a 3m respirator with VOC-type filters I use when spraying glue that would probably work well for mold.  But, I wouldn't want to have to wear it for more than a few hours at a time.  Maybe bleach the old vinyl?  I've mixed bleach and water in a spray bottle and lightly sprayed moldy foam before to prevent regrowth with no ill effects, but I doubt it's really a good idea so I try to avoid doing that.

I don't seem to be that sensitive to it. My sewer on the other hand gets hives if she comes near it. Likely I will come to know the joy the longer I'm around it. Woo-hoo. I don't really have a strategy for dealing with it. Just grin and cover it. And wash my hands lots and don't rub my eyes. I also have a mask for glue but wouldn't want to wear it stripping.

Although it sure does make for a sexy stripper!

I'd try to build my own patterns before I stripped the pads and get the old skins in the trash as soon as possible once stripped. And cover the old boards and foam with new silk film ASAP. And work somewhere there's good air flow. As for disinfecting or sterilizing, I got nothing.

Never knew there was an actual "marine" Spray Nine. I wonder if it is sold by the gallons?

In the UK and France, I have found mould (note the correct spelling) :-) killer in large quantities. I had a mould issue on the walls and ceiling so that's why I went looking. It is known as "anti-mould" "Anti-fungus" and "Anti-mousse".

In the UK I have found it under the Polycell brand...

If those links time out, go to http://www.diy.com and search for mould treatment

Would it work to build a chamber or closet to put the affected items in along with a Ozone Generator such as this one:

and treat the items in that fashion?
