The wonderful world of recliners.

Looking for something for myself and my lady. Intending to find a quality set and reupholster. I know Ekornes to be a reputable brand, comfortable, etc. Even these I see to be going for $300 used.

Anyone else have suggestions or experiences?

You can repair the frame and beef up the joints on almost any recliner but the important thing to consider is the mechanism. And in my opinion the Lay-Z-Boy from the 60's and 70's can't be beat. I have worked on many from this era that were still as tight as a drum. It has a distinct and patented ratcheting system.  Once you see one you will always know, that's a Lay-Z-Boy. It looks like this,

I worked for Century Motion Division back in the 80's. I can say first hand they built a pretty solid recliner

I have also worked on several Bradington and Young recliners that seemed pretty solid.

What I like about Century and Bradington and Young is they try to design them with a little style. Several years ago I rebuilt this pair of B & Y recliners. They have style and were very comfortable.

I rebuilt this recliner, by Ashley and ugly as sin. https://goo.gl/photos/9bJTzTkiqs477t7g9

Out of those I like the bradington&young. Still a substantial piece of furniture.
I was surprised my when my wife said she would be ok to switch out our armchairs as long as I got matching recliners.

The Danish even made sleek recliners. I like that because they are regular-sized pieces. Yet, our style is really contemporary. So I don't think that would fit in terribly well. Probably the B&Y would be better. I'll have to dig a little deeper and see what I can find.

I just have this little dachshund. Guy pulled me out a real hole, and he means the world to me. We don't allow him on our sofa otherwise he'd be up there daily, getting it dirty. But I was allowed to have him up on my recliner before i got rid of it. Want to do that again. Just nothing like a man's best friend.

We do work for a couple who buy and sell Danish modern furniture. Their house feels like stepping back into the 60's. Last time I was there I noticed a recliner and told them we just recovered one like it. They said this recliner is sought after by people collecting midcentury furniture. They said if it has the hump on the top of the back it is even better.

Lay-Z-Boy must have made millions of these. We have probably done a dozen in this style over the years. This one was done for a lady who's husband had just passed away. It was in his study. It was the first time it had been reupholstered and all the padding had to be replaced. I was surprised at the color the decorator picked out but when done it looked pretty striking.

That is a good-looking piece.

Yes, this mid-century thing is really booming. Probably more so now that the economy is moving and more people have some extra money to spend.

I'm a Gen X and also millenials are going nuts over it.

Yes, this price is really good!
