I feel this is some comeuppance for my sin of pride.

I really thought I could do this with only 12 staples per chair.

Is it the dog thing?  Do I need to get a dog?

I assume you are referring to Gene's "zen-puppy". When I was apprenticing as a shoe maker my master always called it working with a pure mind. As a journeyman he told to pull my head out of my arse. ( my words never his--too much class).

Yes you need to focus on the fabric and work with it, not just yank it around. You have to "sweep" the fabric with your left hand as you pull with your right. You should be able to line up the length of your hand at a pass and staple that down at the rate of ---staple, 2-3 spaces,staple,....
