They were used to making their own decisions then acting on them rather than following the corporate line, asking permission, marching to the beat of the drummer, etc.

That reminds me of what I'm thinking when I'm at a church meeting. I think many of the committee members work at jobs in large companies or the government (remember, Wash DC metro area) and they're used to "well, let's form a sub-committee to look into this issue and have them report back to us in two months" so that's usually how the wheels turn. I'm thinking more like "Oh, I see the problem, dive in and I'll have it fixed by the end of the week".  ::)
