Cushions with a crown

Do many of you makes these, for example a couch cushion with crown?

An unusual thing happened today, at least in this market.  Actually had an order to fabricate and fill two large L-shape couch cushions, with a crown.  It has been a while since I had a request like this because it was filled with five inch foam, wrapped, but boxing was only three inches.  It was a fun project for it differed from the usual type fabrication request.

I really liked the results because it looked so comfortable and exuded with the extra detail. 

That is what I have been missing lately, that type of work.  The three inch box, half inch crown plus the corner darts really set it off in that it definitely didn't have the ordinary box look.

I know, but the public doesn't want to pay for that, just make it and don't charge much, that is the market mentality today.  So sad, I suppose it is like this everywhere. 

Some of the automobiles built back, for example, in the 20's carried this look, plus they sometimes added tufting.

Today was fun though.

I can learn the posting of pictures, I suppose that I could check out the instructions for setting up a place to put the pictures and so on from the instructions I believe are available on this site.  Plus, there are those like you that know how to do the posting best I could learn.

I started in the digital camera direction once but back then I guess the technology wasn't at the greatest development is today and your right again, get a good camera.

There are others on this board who have exploited the technology we discuss, I admire all of you and find your discussions with photo support very interesting.

With that one has to start, a start is looking into it again.  In my business a camera would have its dividends.

Ahh, another "digital doger", Doyle?  I understand.  I have a digital camera (very old) and struggle with things like picture posting (I can only pull off the highlighted link so far).  But it's time for a new camera and time to "get current".  It's hard to do when you know next to nothing and are basically "on your own".

I would like to know how you executed the crowned cushion.  You ended up with a 3" boxing.  Did you shave the 5" foam down along the edges or did the 3" boxing simply compress the foam the desired height when you stuffed the cover?  Did you have two fully welted pcs. and the boxing, or did you simply dart the corners and welt the single seam joing the top and bottom?  I can't quite picture what you did.  Would you explain a little bit more?

But I know I would like the finished product; plump and inviting!  Understated luxury that is not what we have grown so accustomed to seeing these days.  Homogenization is so very, very dull, isn't it?!

The camera bit, well would I really use it that much is the question for not engaging.  A little reading and I would get there.  I suppose the priorities I have put on my time, is the primary reason I haven't engaged so far.  I am a busy person but it wouldn't hurt a thing to bring my digital capabilities up some.  Given time, I will participate and make it a fun experience also.

You ask about the crowned cushion:  First the filler was a slab of 5 inch wrapped.  The patterning, of the foam was the standard one inch in terms of length and width in oversize.

The faces were cut with arc running along all sides, but the back of the cushion, and were sized bigger than typical faces.  Then, darts were cut at the corners and seamed to yield a drop down where they would have the cording sewn.  This is the simple picture of how you end up with a three inch boxing, yet using foam filler much thicker.  This type of geometry enables the cording (two rows) on the faces to drop down on the sides of the cushion and join the three inch boxing.

Then, the crown is formed in the center area of the faces, mainly facilitated by the arc fullness, provided as said above in the  two faces.  This provides a small crown of good taste and sides of the cushion end up straight.

Put simply, the crown is formed by filler (foam) pushing the fabric faces outward until the sides end up straight and the crown results this way.

The results, with the extra details added to the cover; the darts, the closer spaced cording in the boxing do make the difference.

A medium density filler was used and at 5 inches in height, very comfortable.
