LED's for June

 here ya go June.

the material is basic black sunbrella and sunbrella 7/8 binding

the re inforcement is Dacron sail tape 1 1/2" wide or called slit tape here
this one is a 4oz thickness but a 6oz works better as you cant see the LEDs
so easy.




  The Led strips come from Ebay, some have a black back but these white ones are nicer.
they come as long as you like and can be cut down every 3 leds so you can put 5yards of the stuff in
or 5 inches..

they are waterproof because they are sealed with epoxy and remain fairly flexible
but wouldn't take much folding, but they will wrap around something like a beer bottle
without breaking.







the light in my garage wasn't brilliant but this does show you how i do it.








I have thought about sewing the dacron into the bow pockets too so the lights can be overhead
and not just behind the edge reinforcement.

Looks cool rich can you get red?  How are they being rolled up in a storage boot?

hiya

You can get lots of colours including red, on my boat I have some red with double
sided tape on the back, i haven't fitted them yet but I have fitted white ones.
when stuck down they are almost flush, best of all you only
need to drill 1 tiny hole for the wires.




they are flexible,  can wind them around your hand and they seem ok but i'm not sure about long term
the problems would come if they got folded i think. i'm sure you could wrap the around the frame to fit the boot.

i don't think i'd fit a long run of these in one go but probably 3 or 4 separate units.

I'll have to investigate.  The flexing would be an issue with canvas, but in shorter strips I can see where they might be practical. or in T-tops where you don't fold them down.

hiya

they are similar but different June, the ones on that link are even more flexible but about 4mm thick
because they are sleeved in a silicone jacket. I have some of those and they are good because they
can be glued down with clear silicone.

these are like mine but with a black back..White backed ones like mine are not so easy to find.

I also have some remote modules that just do on and off so you can turn the lights on/off without getting onto the boat :-)

Right on! Now you need the solar powered canvas to light the built in lights! If we could find stitch-able batteries we'll be all set!

My boat totally needs some. Can you dim them?

i just double checked , yes you can

a variable resistor will do it or a rheostat
from a stove should work too

These are cool.  Is this something you're offering on your canvas?

I wish I knew  more about wiring and controlling LED's.  I'd like to put some on my motorcycle.  Much cheaper if you buy your own lights and put it all together VS buying a kit.  I've just been hesitant to jump in and try it.

I know they have a VERY low battery draw, so they'd be perfect to use on some of the older Ural and Denepr sidecar rigs which have limited charging systems.

I haven't actually sold any in canvas but have done lots of experiments

I like to tinker :-)

they are very easy if you buy them in strips all you do is connect them to the
12v supply.

if using individual LEDS you either buy 12v ones or the standard is 3.3v
so you wire 3 of them together which equals 9.9v but they could still blow
if only using 9.9V so just add a resistor of about 300 to 400 ohms.

if you buy them in packs of 100 on ebay they normally send you the
correct resistors free. ( i would check though )

the LEDs are not really fussy about current etc but the are a diode so only
work with the power flowing in one direction, they block the power flowing in the other direction
so you soon know if they are connected the wrong way round

Very cool idea, thanks for sharing and keep us posted.  I've considered using LED's for over a year now but never settled on a way to do it, may have to try your idea out. 

Do you think putting a row of them across the bow pockets where the canvas doesn't have to flex as much to close the opening would work any better with a long strip?

hiya

yes i'm sure they would work well, i have thought about putting them into the bow
pockets but was put off by the wire run. you could drill a hole in the bow
and feed the wire to the end.
