A quick google map search shows Gig Harbor right around the corner from Tocoma which is right around the corner from Seattle. Interstate all the way. My wife and I flew into Seattle once then drove up to Vancouver to catch a cruse through the inside passage. Beautiful country but I bet the winters are brutal? Would you consider temp summer help? Whats the traffic like in Gig Harbor?

Just curious, how long have you been in business? How big is your shop and how many employees do you have? Do you have a stripper. Do you have a seamstress.

Would your upholstery tech need to know all aspects of your business or are you willing to hire someone who does only boats or only furniture?

What would a good upholsterer with say 10 or 20  years experience and knowledge in all aspects of furniture upholstery expect to make in Washington?

I know you said to PM you but we get a lot of upholsterers on this site who don't participate and these are the first questions that come to my mind. Answers to these questions may get you more responses. Plus I'm nosey.

In the helpful guy that I am, and to promote this trade no matter what new termed position it becomes, this Government outlook sheds a bit of light on Upholstery. I have enjoyed in the past many articles with inspiration on their site, and there are some exceptionally talented people for sure.
Anyway without further adooooo a link from the site

The last sentence on your link reads "what are we going to do about it?"

Most people love the affordable furniture coming out of China. They don't care if it's poorly built they just throw it away and redecorate every 6 or 7 years. I have stopped trying to educate these people and stopped trying to get them to use my service. The only way to compete with cheap furniture is to lower your prices. I can't afford to do that anymore.

So I started to target a smaller crowd, a niche you could say of people who still see value in well built furniture. I don't try to hide the fact that my prices are higher than the discount furniture stores and when someone calls and points this out I don't try to talk them into using me. There not in my niche. And so far this has worked out really well for me.

I target customers who own furniture built pre-80's. I market myself as the antique spet. And I market myself as the choice of designers.

Most of my customers are word of mouth but customers who find us on the internet is steadily increasing. This year will be the first in 4 years we will have a small ad in YP. This also gets me on YP.com. We'll see what happens.

Yep and I have my free listing for High Springs. But I tried to get a free listing on YP.com in Gainesville and they would not let me without a Gainesville address. Google for business is the same way. They apparently want a physical address for the city your advertising in. They will let you advertise in areas outside of your city if you buy an upgrade or if you advertise in the phone book. At least that is what the YP rep told me. I've tried a bunch of different things with no luck. I even tried a fake address, nope. If you know a way around this problem I sure would like to hear it.

Kody,
I didn't know that was the case. I think I am listed in my surrounding areas withing maybe 50 miles. But I am unsure how far and what it all really entails. Next time I talk to a YP rep I will ask them about this. They call every so often. Trying to sell me more I'm sure but never have been pushy about it.

Paul, you're in Tarpon Springs but I see on you web site your service area is much larger. Try to get a free listing in Tampa or St Petersburg and I think you will see what I mean. I spent hours trying to figure it out. Gainesville is only 20 miles away. We get a free YP.com listing for Lake City but we have a business number there that forwards to our phone.

Google for business is even worse. I would love to have a listing for Gainesville on Google. To claim a business on Google you must give a physical address. A PO Box will not work. They then send a verification number, via US post, that you use to activate the account. No way to have a Google page in another city unless you own real estate there. This is one reason why when someone types "upholsterers in Gainesville" I come up on page two. I've tried a lot of things but my ranking stays the same. My business is all over page one in High Springs. It's frustrating.

Google Maps is really messed up. High Springs changed all the local addresses to comply with 911 services. 9 months later and google Maps still hasn't caught up. When I enter my address the Google Maps program
does not recognize it and automatically changes it. It shows my location in another neighborhood. It gets real fun when someone is using GPS and I have to explain why its incorrect.  I've contacted Google many times and expressed my concern If there was an emergency and EMS could not find my address. They don't seem to care.

i can't say for sure it's google, but one of those maps providers keep moving us too. Our shop [Len's alternative rv] is 2 1/2 miles west of a major intersection [18th street and Richmond ave.] but we keep coming up about 1 1/2miles south on 18th. I don't know how often Dave has had to call them.
