Hey anybody else here play the squeezebox?

No doubt you've heard the song by the Who. This song came out when I was a young teen. Of course me and my friends had no idea this was a musical instrument and thought the composer was referring to a part of the female body. I'm sure that was the rock bands intent.

The sueezebox am referring to 'though is the button accordion. It's got buttons instead of piano keys for the melody. A two row GC or AD Hohner works best for me but there are some great American made cajun single rows for zydeco in B flat and tex mex players usually go a three row GCF. The Brits call the instrument a melodeon. The Italians make superb squeezeboxes but they are usually brighter in tone than the German ones. In aussie we used to use squeezeboxs heaps in bush bands where people would get together for a hootenanny and more than a coupla beers.

I search the net for harmonica songs for tab to play from on the squeezebox, from stuff like "The Rose" to "The Marine's Hymn", and stuff from Pink Floyd to Dylan. It's a real hoot! In fact you can transpose straight from harp tab to button accordion except all the suck notes on the harp you have to play one hole / button up on the squeezebox. Blow or push notes are the same. You can croon along and its amazing how good it all sounds after a coupla beers!

If you ever get a chance to pick up  the squeezebox its a whole lotta fun and thoroughly recommended! Probably real good for exercising old sewers' hands too!

If I'm thinking right this instrument is the small octagonal one the seven dwarfs played not the big accordion of Laurence Welk fame,right?

here's a button accordion squeezebox
looks like a three stopper, single row, in the key of C
note, a different shape to a concertina (used a lot for sea shantys)
it's best to sing along from day one otherwise its hard to coordinate later
don't worry if you sing out of tune at first, one can only get better
this particular song easier to play on a two row,
this is the first song my old uncle taught me to play years ago
he didn't sing along as he used to be a harmonica player
and he blew in and out with his mouth as he heard and played the notes
pretty hard to sing on the in breath!
