General Discussion / Re: Cloth Backed Foam
Last post by Virgs Sew n Sew - June 09, 2020, 03:17:53 am
I've done a couple of small pieces, just to make sure I know what I'm doing.  Yup, very straightforward and slow.  It is complicated because I putting an inset in the top of the pleating with a logo sewn on it.  So I have to cut out some of the scrim.  I was able to successfully do it on my test, lined everything up correctly and it looks great.

Itching to start the actual process.  We're using the Peggy Sue (see late 50's GMC truck seats).  Only complication is that the pontoon seats are an "L".  There should be 5-6 inches of contrast but because of the "L" where the 2 seats butt has to be 23" in the white corner.  Can't do the same amount on the ends of the "L" or the logos won't lay as customer wants them to.  I'm going to call him this morning and make sure all is good so that we can get this thing rocking and the pontoon in the water before boating season is over.  I thought we'd be almost through with the seats by now and I'd be looking forward to making a new Bimini.  Do it right the first time though.

Should be 10,000 kb and four pictures can be posted at once.

Sewing scrim is pretty straight forward. It is a very slow process though as you have to take your time
making sure the lines stay perfectly parallel.

Not one of my fun sewing jobs. :)

Testing this...

Well done! Have you set any limits on the file size?

Image Test- Looks like we got the attachments directory working. I'll be fiddling around with some more settings in the meantime.

Just to let you know: We are working on some features that did not work in the old forum. Space for images is one of those features. Rob is one of those who knows more than I do about the forum setup, so he is knee-deep into the problem with ancient configurations. Among other things, he has got your avatars working again. Just give him some time!

General Discussion / Machines Down
Last post by Mojo - June 03, 2020, 07:46:34 pm
I had 2 single needle machines go down today, our long arm and our Chandler. Both suffered timing issues.
I worked till 10 PM tonight on them and got the timing back in and they are running great. No idea how the timing got so far off.

This is the first time I have had a machine go down in over a year and a half so I cannot complain.
I did notice the hooks were getting worn so ordered 2 new ones and will replace them next week. I installed a new needle bar on my Chandler 2 years ago. I also went through and replaced the take up spring assemblies on both Chandlers as they were getting tired. I am so glad I learned machine repair because we do not have a machine tech worth a crap anywhere around us.

I consider myself lucky as all of our machines get heavy use - day in and day out. Our twin needle Highleads have been amazing machines. They get the hell run out of them everyday - all day and never miss a beat. Our industrial Juki serger has been a solid performer as well.

Some of you may remember my first machine - a Chinese walking foot that was the biggest POS ever made. That machine is what taught me how to work on machines. I would sew for two hours and work on that machine for 4 hours. It never stayed in time, parts broke constantly. When I bought my Chandler I thought I died and went to heaven.

What has really helped me with our machines is our stitchers are all gentle on the machines. I had one stitcher a couple years ago that was rough as heck on the machines so I had machines going down all the time. It seemed she would take one down once a week.

We have back up machines and all of our tables have wheels. When a machine goes down we wheel it out of the way and move another machine in its place. Our sewing schedule as of late is a mess. We are so back ordered from phenomenal sales the last 2 months we cannot afford a machine being down for 2 hours let alone all day. We brought on a 3rd stitcher to help with the volume but we still are struggling to keep up.

Hope all of you are well,

Mojo

I'm also not a fan of masks for the exact reason you posted.  Up until a few weeks ago, I wore one while walking the dogs and while riding my bike.  Our numbers have been horrific (meat packing plant in town) and they seem to be subsiding now but no one is really sure as they are no longer including numbers of those testing positive that work at Swift so who knows.

It will be a while before I'm ready to go to a restaurant.  We did a lot of take out from our favorite hang outs but I'm not sure about sitting in one for an hour so that won't change.

I think I've got a handle on the cloth backed foam.  The guy I bought my upholstery machine from, and who does machine maintenance, is a very competent upholsterer.  Went over to his shop yesterday and he gave me a short class.  So, I'll make another rough drawing today, just so I"m sure of what I'm doing and start cutting and sewing.

Glad you're doing well!
