Niiiice! I didn't expect the windows to be hinged. Nice view of the garden. What is the body of water we are looking at?

I've become spoiled. Use to be a time when booting up the computer in the morning I would turn it on and walk away for a while. Now if it doesn't load up in less than 10 seconds I get aggravated. Technology has made me impatient. I need instant information and instant replies. I remember as a boy long distance phone calls were extremely rare. Just to darn expensive. If I wanted to talk to grandma I would write a letter. And two weeks later I would get a response. 30 years ago if I needed information I would either take a class or borrow a book at the library.

Now days everything is right in front of me. And if it takes more than two clicks to post a picture its too much trouble. Grandma would be amazed. Makes me wonder how technology will evolve in the next 100 years. Now where is that smiley face icon?

General Discussion / Re: The virus

Sounds like the best way to beat this virus is to eat healthy, build up your immune system and get plenty of cardio exercise and fresh air. At the first sign of a sore throat eat raw garlic. I know, sounds weird.

Stay away from large groups. Florida has required closings. The school around the corner is closed, Hardies restaurant and all others are closed. City Hall is closed. Our pastor stopped by today to say the church has mandatory closer until April. Pray for all those employed in medical and emergency professions.

We have a customer coming tomorrow to pick up a sofa. Another customer Friday to drop off a pair of chairs. Dentist neighbor across the street is still going to work every morning.

We have plenty of toilet paper so we'll be fine.

Photo bucket use to have an IMG option you could copy and insert into your forum message. This would put a thumbnail photo into your message. Usually that was enough to understand what the poster was conveying. And if you wanted to see a larger photo you could click on the thumbnail picture and a bigger photo would appear.

You could also use the IMG photo to add a user photo next to your user name. That was neat because you could personalize your ID, kinda like Facebook does. We lost that option a couple years ago. Maybe I'm missing something but last time I was on Photobucket the IMG option was not there. Only links now.

Photobucket keeps upgrading their site trying to make it more user friendly. But they keep missing the mark. One step picture posting would be a nice option. There are other sites for picture posting but they all involve several steps that most people would rather not bother with. There have been many times I wanted to add a photo to a message but was too tired or just didn't have time.

Your idea is a good one. I've myself have been very disgusted with the antiquated image posting system. And we all have seen the forum shrink from 100 active users to just a handful.

The Upholstery Forum is owned. I doubt if it is copyrighted. The owner pays a moderator, Inga, to upgrade and make sure we follow the rules. Inga is a techie, not an upholsterer. We all love her and some of the changes she made Has made this site more user friendly. Imaging is not one of them. I don't think its possible to upgrade imaging with this servers limited storage.

The owner advertises on the forum to help defer the costs. There are thousands of how too tips on the forum that hundreds of guests use weekly. If not for these guests I'm pretty sure this forum would have folded long ago. Back in the day Sofa Doc was the most prolific user. Often posting 5 or 6 times a day. He was a key element to keeping this site going. Haven't seen Sofa in awhile.

I think the forum was sold once. I cannot say who the new owner is but he likely can be found with a little research. You might try pitching the idea to him. My best guess is he has already thought of it. If he knew you would handle the switch to fb and would be one of the moderators he may agree.

Or you could start your own group on fb. Keep in mind there are already several groups out there and it may be easier to join one of them. That's what I did but I seldom post on it.

It's hard to know what to believe or who to believe. It sounds like you're on top of it. All we can do is look at our personal situation and respond accordingly.

As far as all the hype, I see it as a good thing. It may depress our economy but because of all the precautions taking place the virus should be short lived. Another thing to consider about a slowed economy is all the uncertainty with the upcoming election. Hopefully everything will get back to normal (whatever normal is) after November.

Stay well Mojo.

Mumps, Measles, Chicken pocks, Pneumonia, Viruses, Bacteria's I had them all. They never declared a national emergency. The cure was chicken soup and orange juice. Give em a couple aspirins and send them to bed. But seriously, I did end up in the children's hospital with pneumonia once. 12 years old, couldn't keep any food down. The nurse asked me, if I could have any food what would it be. I said chocolate milk shake. So she went to the Kitchen and made me one. I took one sip and couldn't finish it. I felt bad she went to all that effort.

I didn't walk to school but did ride my bike 3/4 miles to the bus stop. I locked the bike to a chain link fence behind the laundromat. The bus did NOT stop at every house.

Now I live around the corner from the local elementary/middle school. Some mornings I walk the dog by the school and can say for certain, nobody walks to school anymore.

Billy Heath's dad bought him a boat for his birthday. Mom said, if I ever catch you riding in that boat I'll have your hide. So I always had to duck down when passing our house.

Gym was an easy "A" except that one year I got a C. For some reason that coach did not like me.

I would ride my bike 5 miles to my best friends house. Spend the night and ride it back home the next day. Wasn't a big deal back then.

We survived by learning life's lessons, like licking our wounds, drinking out of the garden hose and staying clear of the school bully.

I really don't know. It was 60" wide. It was her third attempt at a decent fabric. The first was way too thin. The second stretched like spandex. The final decision worked mostly like upholstery fabric. Sewing was a problem. As you can imagine the hairs kept getting caught in the seam. We spent a lot of time picking them out.

We told the customer making welt with that fabric would not work. We considered using a normal, color matched fabric for welt but decided it would get lost in all that fur. We built the chair with no welt.

She dated the chair to over 100 years old (a family heirloom). As you can imagine dust kept falling out. This required many uses of the blower nozzle as I was putting on the new fabric. And every time I used the blower hair would dislodge from the fabric. This was a little concerning to me. I envisioned bald spots in short order. But she told me the chair was going into a back bedroom and would get little use. Cutting the pattern left a mess on the table.

General Discussion / Business is picking up.

Slow start to the year but business has been trickling in. Picked up 3 jobs today.
Been working on some unusual pieces lately.

This small wing chair in a furry white fabric. We tried to talk the customer out of this fabric but she insisted. I really didn't know how it would turn out, I've never used fabric like it before. I was surprisingly pleased with the results.

And these two deconstructed chairs by Restoration Hardware. I'm not a big fan of this style, it looks like something is missing. The customer was happy and that's all that maters.

How has business been for everyone else?

General Discussion / Re: Fabrics, esp. outdoor fabrics
February 27, 2020, 07:42:04 pm
Rose had these same questions so she called a Sunbrella rep. Her main question was about mold and mildew. Is Sunbrella really resistant to these problems. She had to press him for the answer because their advertising says they are.

The truth is when Sunbrella or any outdoor fabric gets dirt on it mold and mildew will form. Also Sunbrella is breathable, meaning it is resistant to rain but when left out in the elements over time will absorb moisture and start to show wear. He then told her cushions under an over hang or in a sunroom should preform to satisfaction. But in the South (and I'm guessing California too) the sun is the biggest culprit of deterioration.

He said for furniture that is left out in the elements it is best to store the cushions indoors. This is what we tell our customers when they ask about fabric that can be left outside.

I've been in the upholstery business for close to a lifetime. And in no way am I an expert in fabric. But I have worked with many and can honestly say I have never heard of polyester gabardine. So I looked it up. What I found is polyester gabardine is best suited for overcoats, trousers, suits, uniforms, and windbreakers.

Now that's not to say there is no such thing as an upholstery weight fabric called polyester gabardine. I've just never heard of one.

So that gets me to wonder, did you buy an apparel type fabric to cover your chair? The reason I ask is because apparel fabric works much different then upholstery weight fabric. And some (most) apparel fabrics are not suited for upholstery. This may explain the stretch.
