Doyle why not treat this like a standard channel back and sew empty channels and then fill them after they are sewn?

The video shows compound feed. The needle is moving along with the feet.

I found this on a search.

-- snip--
Pfaff 545 sewing machine overview:

- Made in Germany (top quality)

- Walking foot with needle feed (feet are clamped on material and needle pierced when feed takes place)
--end snip--

This would make the 545 a compound feed (needle feed) walking foot machine. The needle being in the fabric at the time of feed means the needle must move with the feed dogs. I had a 545 in the shop for a short time. but don't remember the feed type.

65 watch the feeding closely to see if this is the case for your machine. If not there must be different versions of the 545.

A compound walking foot machine where the need feeds also stops a lot of the uneven stretching. When the fabric is feed  (moves) the needle stays in the fabric and moves with the walking movement therefore holding all layers of fabric together. I find it mush better. I worked with a pfaff 145 for 30 years and it was not a needle feed, I don't think, and had problems with puckering at times. My 1541 keeps the fabric much evener.

That plastic has to be very stiff so when you turn it into the channel it stays put.

Use a larger needle for a larger hole. A 20 is only equivalent to a 130. I would use at least a 140 and possibly a diamond point.

Doyle,
I too have tried to replicate the large stitch length, and thread size on a piece I was redoing. Not to repair but a reupholstery job. Came to find out my machine 1541 should use a needle larger than 160 and a thread larger than 138. The thread I tried was 210. My mechanic said I would ruin the bobbin case holder. While I did get it to work before being told this I won't do it again. I basically had to sew by turning the wheel by hand mostly.

Scammers are really changing their ways in the last year or so. Be careful what you do. Odd they are using the US mail now but not unbelievable. It is big business.

65 think about the seam. The first stitch connects two pieces of fabric together this is a standard seam. Then they top stitch bu opening the seam allowance of the fabric in both directions but the first stitched seam is still the only think holding the two pieces of fabric together. So there is no added strength to the seam. Cosmetic yes structurally stronger no. When a binding tape is added the seam becomes stronger because the tape is bonding the two sections together.
A simple one sided top stitch does add strength to the seam because your not opening both sides of the seam allowance.

Watching that video I have to wonder why people nowadays fail to put seam binding of some sort under the seam when top stitching. The practice was originally done to provide a stronger connection to the seam. Without the binding it is nothing but cosmetic and you can see through the stitching. I do like the way he does the corner and doesn't run straight through.

Doyle,
I used to get this type of welting in around 20 years ago. It's been around a long time. It is a good way, in a factory, to get the cording from wrinkling. Repairing them is what we did back then and it was a small PITA but not too bad once you did a few. I never saw the folder or process in the factory.
