General Discussion / Re: bonded leather

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and replaced the panels that were pealing. The panels that were against the body were the ones pealing so I only replaced those. The chair looks awesome. Green pattern fabric running down the chair with the original brown leather panels on the sides.

General Discussion / Asymmetrical striped fabric
August 04, 2019, 05:43:40 am
How do you run your stripes on the arms when the fabric is an asymmetrical stripe? Do you keep all the fabric heads up or do you turn the fabric upside down on one arm so the arms are mirror images of each other. This also causes the outside side panels to be different.

The picture below shows a chair where the fabric on one arm has been inverted. It does not show the back out fabric panel but would you invert the back out fabric panel also?

I got a chair from the factory where the fabric on one arm was not inverted to make a mirror image and the homeowner wants it changed.

Thank you,

PS. Just a note of interest: The chair in the picture costs $339.99. The chair in my shop costs $4,000.00.

A friend was wounded in Vietnam 3 times. He hurt his back 25 years ago and went on disability. The VA allowed him to become addicted to morphine because that was only way he could get pain relief. He had 2 or 3 surgeries for a brain tumor. One day at a picnic I mentioned how I had kidney stones one time. My friend lit up like a Christmas tree and started telling us all about how the worst pain he ever had was his kidney stones.

Every woman I have talked to who gave birth and also had kidney stones has said that the kidney stones were more painful.

No one has ever said "You know. I would like a few more kidney stones."

Have you ever covered over bonded leather on a chair? I'm wondering if I could spray glue a super thin synthetic fabric to the bonded leather and then put a slip cover of face fabric over the chair? It's for a friend and cheap and the smallest amount of time invested is the goal.

I'm sure the bonded leather will keep flaking and I don't want the flakes to be felt through the fabric.

Thanks,

That's a ton of work. I've never worked with teak but I hear it can be difficult.

This is the kind of job where you want to make sure the customer knows the finished project will be "close enough" - no mulligans. :-)

It amazes me that so many people do not protect themselves when using chemicals. Especially their eyes. Even when using a pneumatic staple gun or even pulling staples I've had staples hit my eye glass lenses.

I've been following this video blog from the beginning of a guy from England who is rebuilding a wooden boat in Washington state. A 4 year project. He has 52 videos over these last 2 years. A few videos in he mentioned that he was getting a lot of complaints about his unsafe woodworking methods. He said he is well aware of what he is doing and everyone has different ideas about what is acceptable and safe. A few videos later he showed his bandaged hand where he had cut off the end of his finger. Ouch! He did not mention his previous comments.

General Discussion / Cheap vinyl?
July 19, 2019, 08:41:31 pm
I'm giving an estimate for 8 leather barrel back chairs with decorative tacks. The customer wants faux leather vinyl, which I think is fine.

I suggested $30 to $50 per yard vinyl with 75,000 to 100,000 rubs. He was going to pay for the vinyl separately.

He got two other bids that only have the decorative tacks around the arms and not around the base of the chair. He also has chosen EZ Vinyl, which you can buy at Joann Fabrics. It has 50,000 rubs. It also has a polyester backing. The label says it's for marine, indoor commercial, home.

The 8 chairs are used in the companies cafeteria.

He wants me to resubmit my estimate with the tacks only around the arms and include the EZ vinyl.

I'm thinking the EZ Vinyl will be OK, but is not the best choice. Any thoughts on why I might want to not put my name on EZ Vinyl?

This type of chair:

Thanks,

I do not know what the other bids are. And I don't care to know.

I think it's both the size of the ass AND the rush to get more food for the rest of the show. they are Tonnected.

I've seen recliner mechanisms that are 25 years old that are almost twice as thick as the new ones today. Building in obsolescence is a real thing. And the cheaper you can make a part that will last just longer than the warranty is money that goes to the profit line.

Great job.

I was wondering why some trunks had a domed top. So I looked it up.

I have 3 interested customers. One may use it in a theatrical production for furniture on stage. One wants to be able to turn the swivel end so they can look out the window and then turn it back to use the piece as a loveseat when they have guests over. The 3rd is interested for it's uniqueness with no specific application.

The project is not complete until the check clears. :-)

I just ordered 18/90 1" foam for the sides to see if it better supports the top foam around the edges. I'll use medium density foam for the top. The edge roll was promising but added some time to the process and I didn't like feeling it under the batting.

Can you remember getting up without sound effects gene ?

I know a guy who blew his knee out by standing up from sitting on a chair.

I also know a guy who was on disability because he sneezed and he blew out a disk in his back.

I don't mind sound effects when I get up. I worry about getting up and hearing that sustained scream coming from me while waiting for the ambulance. "Help I've fallen and I can't get up" is no longer a sad commercial. It has become something to actually worry about.

Florida passed a law ending dog racing at the end of 2020 if I remember correctly. There will be 10,000 greyhound dogs up for adoption. They make great lap dogs. Get a greyhound and not a cat. Cats are useless. They sleep around 20 hours a day. They think they are gods and humans exist only to serve them. I know. I have two cats.

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to give both ideas a try to see how they work.

I want to enclose the wood box with foam so the corners are soft. This helps add to the uniqueness of the ottoman.

My idea is to be able to make a custom ottoman of any l x d x h up to 23" for one price plus COM of 1 yard or 1 1/2 yards of fabric, depending on the size. IDs can include this as part of their original work, as an add on to a project, or even as a TY to their customers. By keeping my cost down (materials and labor time) and having a specific procedure to cut the parts and put everything together will keep my price down.

I'm selling a custom size with COM and a fairly quick turn around. I can't compete on price with any company who makes a lot of ottomans. So I need to have value added to justify my price.

I use the Kreig circular saw guide. This is awesome and quick for cutting our my 6 wood panels to make the box. (I get excited about the Kreig circular saw guide. This is an easy tip off that I am not a woodworker. LOL)
