General Discussion / Re: Ripper Tool
September 02, 2019, 06:11:24 am
I'm working on 8 antique barrel back office chairs with a lot of decorative tacks and staples. I can't use my multi function oscillating tool so I have to pull each tack and staple out with hand tools. I found that my awl works best on these chairs. I tap the point of the awl under a decorative tack or staple and it lifts it up enough to be able to pull the staple out with my nippers without damaging the wood.

I just commented to my son last night that the commercials on youtube are getting more and more frequent. And I've noticed that people who have blogs (audio) are starting to read commercials during their talks. They are talking about some topic and all of a sudden you realize they are reading a commercial for "Books on Tape" or some credit card.

Getting stuff for free can be a real hassle sometimes. :-)

Do you remember the movie "Catch Me If You Can" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks? The man who that movie was made about is Frank Abagnale. Abagnale has a wonder talk on youtube where he talks about his life and how he has worked for the FBI in their fraud division for the last 40 years. He says the one thing that has surprised him the most in his life is that there are governments today who are actively hacking companies, banks, and individuals to extort and steal money, all over the world.

I have done work for a man who is wealthy. We were talking about this topic and he said you will get ripped off by people in your life. All you can do is make sure it is small stuff, a small amount of money, that they steal.

I received a foot stool from a company in California. No paperwork. I got a call from that company asking if I received the footstool. I asked for my P.O. number. They said they were only calling to confirm that I did receive the footstool. I asked for my P.O. number. They said they just wanted to verify that the footstool had been delivered. I again asked for my P.O. number. I forget how many times I asked for my P.O. number before they hung up. I never heard from them again.

Be careful out there.

I was always under the impression that the guy in the video was focusing on showing how to make a 90 degree turn with a top stitch. I just assumed that in production he would use tape.

And I agree, I always use tape of some sort when doing these types of stitches. I've even cut tight weave fabric into strips to use for my tape.

Homestead was a disaster waiting to happen. Studs 48" to 60" on center. No tie downs on rafters as required by law. Many houses with no required insulation in walls. No tie downs to concrete floor. I don't think there was any house in Homestead that came close to being up to code.

Check out Cechaflo on youtube. He has some very detailed videos on top stitching.

I think any machine that can handle the size thread that you want to use is the first step. If you are doing complex shapes, having a motor that will stitch one stitch at a time is needed. Or at least be able to slow very slow and then turn the wheel when you need to go one stitch at a time.  I'm able to do that with my clutch motor but a servo is what most folks talk about.

I happened to have watched this a few days ago, again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrCUWG6b5kk

General Discussion / Re: Bed Bugs
August 15, 2019, 07:06:38 am
I have never dealt with bed bugs. My customers tend to be more affluent and have higher end furniture and if they have a problem with bed bugs they take care of it immediately. So bed bugs have never gotten to my shop.

A guy down the sidewalk from me has a floor carpet store. He mainly puts carpet into apartments. He said he deals with bed bugs all the time. I stay away from him. LOL

The news media runs off of negative news. "If it bleeds it leads. If it does not bleed, we will spin it so it looks like it's bleeding." There is a regular cycle in the news media of reporting bed bugs as an epidemic. A few years ago I followed up on some of these stories and the bed bug population was not getting worse, it was only being made to look worse by the news media.

With that being said, I think our country is going down the toilet in terms of quality of life. And with so many illegals coming into our country, and anti vaxers, we now have tuberculosis and many other diseases that we had once gotten rid of. Our poor educational system does not allow for adequate teaching of proper hygiene for many areas of our country. Many people live with bed bugs and head lice as a normal part of their lives. 8th and 9th and 10 generation welfare recipients are not a sign of success in my mind.

I think bed bugs are a big concern in our business, as are any bug infestation problem. But there are ways to deal with bugs effectively. You can always spray all furniture you take in with Sterifab if you see problems or even have concerns. https://www.sterifab.com/

If you read my comments I'll bet you $1.27 that you were scratching your head while reading. :-)

That employee who refused to serve badges - if he gets shot in the ass the only people on this planet that he will want to see is a cop and a paramedic. And if the badges don't show up quick enough he will get a lawyer and hope to win the lottery.

https://www.joann.com/6oz-x-48in-x-30-yd-poly-by-the-yard/9442997.html#q=polyester%2Bbatting&start=1

You could get one yard of polyester batting. It's 36" x 48". Cut it in half and wrap one piece of your foam twice. This will give you a soft 4".

Put it in a pillow case to hold it together.

Hope this helps.

Boom! That's a joke you can catch with a net.

A comedian said "My wife and I decided we do not want to have any children. So, if anyone wants a 4 year old girl and a 2 year old boy..."

I've certainly learned enough things on this forum to own money to someone.

If I ever win the lottery I'll send everyone a postcard. Or at least my assistant will send you a postcard.

Damn! I had Albright bookmarked from you mentioning them years ago Paul, but had trouble last night figuring out their web site so I went on to https://www.fabricsupply.com/.

I wish I had seen your reply earlier.

Fabric Supply is a wholesaler. I filled out a form to get on their customer list this morning and bought 6 yards at $11.50 per yard and $35 shipping. WHOLESALE! Yes I clearly got ripped off.

I was anxious because not everyone stocks that particular vinyl. So I bought the first thing I found.

Thank you anyway, Paul.

I am looking for 5 yards of Spradling EZ Vinyl 5803 Wallaby Turquoise. Got any laying around your shop? Or a supplier that might?

I can buy a 30 yard roll from my supplier but I only need 5 yards.

Thank you,

General Discussion / Re: Asymmetrical striped fabric

Thanks for the comment. This project is a chair that came from the factory with the fabric the way you describe Kdog. The customer wants it to look like it does in the picture I posted.

I don't get this situation very often and I always ask the customer what they want. The ID on this job said that the fabric always comes the way it is in the picture. I guess she is referring to the factory they buy from.
