Read the max psi on all your machines. Going over the limit can be a real eye opener! Literally.

I use 90 psi on my staplers. 22 gauge 1/4", 3/8", and 5/8" staples with no problems.

90 psi on my 18 gauge brad nailer and stapler. I can see increasing the psi when using 2" staples for hard wood.

Chisel gun and air blower on 90 psi.

My tank is at 150 psi and I have an inline valve that I set at 90 and rarely change it.

I've rebuilt my BEA stapler twice with a rebuild kit I got from my upholstery supplier. It's all new O rings and such. I recently bought a new BEA and I'll probably use the rebuild kit again when needed.

I think most younger people don't know because they don't care. They don't entertain in their houses like their parents did so furniture is not on their "important" list. Getting a leather recliner for $299 that will last a few years before it starts looking worn, and then a few more years until it starts having problems, and then a few more years before it needs to be replaced, is fine with them.

Lay it down on a couple saw horses on it's back, fill it with peanut oil, put a fire under it, and you can deep fry your turkey!

Beautiful work!!! When my grandpa was a young man he used to deliver blocks of ice for people to put in their ice boxes. I was told most of the houses he delivered to were 3 floor apartments. I wonder if he went to the third floor first and worked his way down, or the other way around?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I say club chair because more people know what that is than OS chair.

I say Amoire because High Boy sounds like a race horse name and Armoire sounds more like something you would want to re upholster.

Sofa of course. More people re upholster sofas than couches.

I like to mix 'Mix' and 'Blend'.

Welt cord. "Welting" is something your body does after you've been beaten with a lead pipe. Seamstresses who have sewn all their lives say piping. Welt cord also sounds more maculine.

I don't think I've ever used the word 'bureau'. I don't know why. Maybe it's a midwest thing?

General Discussion / Re: What Ya Been Up To

I've been over busy at work. Thinking of visiting warmer places. Thinking of moving to warmer places and leaving my stapler behind. But I've got a few more years to go. I'd rather whine about being too busy than whine about not being busy enough.

Actually, when the shop is gone and I no longer have deadlines, I still see myself doing upholstery. I enjoy it a lot. So why stop doing what I enjoy. I did a search on this forum a few days ago and saw posts by PapaSage. Remember him? I hope he's still alive and doing well. I got some good ideas and some encouragement from him when I started. Down in Louisiana is I remember correctly.

I just took the wax off my hands. I use the hot wax bath most nights. It helps with the aches and pains.

I've been walking now for 2 1/2 years at the local rec center. 5 to 6 nights a week for 1 hour each night. This may turn out to be the most expensive thing I have ever done. In these 2 1/2 years that I have been walking, I have gained 3 grandchildren!

I've heard them called faux corners.

Thank you for the reply. Sailrite uses a lot of bias tape in their videos and I was wondering if that is common or if they are just trying to sell it.

I thought the French seam had the tongue sticking out???  :-)

Mojo, do you use any basting tape in your sewing? I've used it a few times on difficult fabrics and curves but I've found a few pins or staples from an office stapler work well. I also use it when I'm matching the print on fabrics.

I've had lots of furniture possessed by spirits. Interestingly the spirits have always gotten into my house distilled and enclosed in a glass bottle.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has been wearing the same shoulder pads since he was a freshman at Michigan.

Five players on the New England Patriots were not yet born when Brady began wearing his shoulder pads at Michigan.

The Business Of Upholstery / Re: 7 rules to guide you

I will add two of my rules that I try to follow.

1. How can you afford to do it right the second time if you cannot afford to do it right the first time?

2. "Effective" is when you do the steps necessary to get the job done. "Efficient" is when you ONLY do those steps necessary to get the job done.

I wish I did a lot of these types of cushion inserts. I would love to have this in my shop. But, I would probably never use it, or only use it occasionally for the fun of it, because my shop vac does a great job of compressing cushion inserts wrapped in plastic.

Good idea about using 1/2" foam.

I see a big difference between cheap plywood and furniture grade plywood. The furniture grade plywood is much heavier and seems to work similar to solid wood.

Making changes to furniture, without notifying the customer, just because it's easier for the upholsterer, is dishonest in my opinion. That's not what the customer is paying for. I wouldn't be surprised if you also said the previous upholsterer left the old fabric on the sofa.

"your feed dog is knurled and your top foot  is smooth. There will always be some slipping on the top."

Darren, you answered a question I have had for many years. And this is not the first time you have done this.

Thanks,
