General Discussion / Re: Panel Board
August 09, 2010, 02:04:27 pm
Thanks guys.  Yea I think shipping it over seas would really price it out of reach.  I couldn't get the year and make of the truck out of the guy, he said he could get a headliner kit for it but shipping was very expensive.  I told him unfortunately the cost was due to the over size and if I could get the panel board shipping would be expensive for me also.  Redrum fabrics used to carry it, but Miami no longer has it.  I think the guy was hoping he could just get the panel board, cut it out and install it by himself.

Does anybody remember the old pick ups that had cardboard headliners?  They were colored and were embossed with a grain pattern.  I had a customer call looking for a replacement, I called Miami and was told they no longer carried these panel boards.  Anyone know a good source for these?

The tufting method used in the video does not rely on the buttons to hold the tufts in place, I like that, but your right his button making method is time consuming.  I bet he does not have any issues with the button molds not clinching together, or cutting the fabric.  Whenever I have to make buttons with leather or vinyl, I always run into those problems, sometimes I have to make two or three to get one usable button.

P.S

Very important to back up regularly.  I use a cd so backups are not in my hard drive.  I have lost to much info to computer crashes in the past.  I am seriously considering having a second computer off line to protect it.

Quote1.)  use your computer for book keeping chores? what software are you using and do you like it? is it easy to use?

2.)  do you bank on-line?  and pay bills on line with your suppliers?  why/why not?

3.)  do you print invoices with your computer? and do you keep a record of work you've done for customers over the years on it?

I keep my books with Quick Books and use the manufacturing version.  I love it!  it gives me up to date information at the tip of my fingers.  Fairly easy to learn, but their is a learning curve.

No I do not bank on line and never will.  I do not trust the internet, to many virus's and hackers out there.

Yes, computer generated invoices look very professional in my opinion and quick books automatically keeps records of what I have done and for whom.

QuoteI probably just not completely understand this liability issue, but I do need to invent something that will make buying fabrics from me more attractive then buy it somewhere else.

If you come up with something please let the rest of us in on it.  The trouble with using COM is we really do not know what the customer has.  Products usually sell for less money for a good reason. It could be someone decided to sell wholesale to the public, or they are peddling seconds.  The possibility that a second my not be noticed until it falls apart within a short amount of time is to great not to warn our customers.  I view it as protecting my customer from a costly mistake, and also protecting my reputation.  My profit is based on my labor, so fabric sale's are an extra bonus.

A very important aspect to consider is if a customer supplies their own fabric and the shop owner assumes responsibility for the fabric and he, or she makes a mistake the shop owner must buy more fabric, if it is available at all at full cost.  If the shop owner supplies the fabric and makes a mistake that fabric can be replaced at wholesale.  The general public views us as professionals and pro's never mess up right?  If its COM the customer knows you messed up, even if we pay for more fabric.  If its shop supplied fabric the customer never knows about the screw up and we can keep our professional image.  That is worth paying for, but buying your customers fabric for them is not a sound business plan.

My son and I both have Monte Carlo's.  His is an Aero Coupe and mine is just a Landau, about 20 years ago I smashed the front of mine up and planned on putting an SS nose on it.  Time went on and I bought some parts, but the project mostly just sat in the garage.  My sons Aero Coupe has been sitting as well for a couple of years and I decided to get my butt in gear and finish these projects up.  We both need different parts, so I figured a parts car would be the most cost effective route to go.  I found an SS on Craigs list and e-mailed the seller.  They got right back to me and explained the problems with the car and also said they wanted it gone and I could probably get it cheap.  We took a 2 hour drive to look at the car, it runs, there are no holes anywhere except a few small ones in the trunk.  The frame is rotted behind the rear wheels and they  included new frame sections for the repair, I have done this repair before and it is an easy fix, it needs a little body work, mostly some surface rust and a few dents and dings and new paint.  That's about it, we agreed to a price of 500.00 bucks, needless to say it went on the trailer right then and there.  As happy as I am for getting such a good deal it it upsetting that things are getting so tight for some people.  My son is disappointed because this car is to good to cut up and I would be foolish to cut up an SS in this shape to make a Landau look kind of like an SS.  So it looks like I have a "new" project.   The way things are going I may end up with some nice cars that I cant sell.

I see what you guys are saying and figured it would come to something like that eventually.  I don't figure why he wants me to use a different shipper?  It is going to take me alot of extra work to work with a different shipper, I have an account with Fed Ex and am all set up to work with them, thinking of just telling him we ship with Fed Ex and see where this leads from there.  Defiantly think I will let him know I plan on checking up on him.

General Discussion / New Kind Of Scam ?
July 19, 2010, 10:38:06 am
I had a customer contact me vi e-mail asking what credit cards I accepted and if I shipped over seas.  I told him what cards I accepted and that I would be willing to ship over seas.  Next e-mail I get he wants the address to my web site so he can choose what products he wants, I give him the address.  Then he e-mails me with a list of products and asks me to quote on shipping.  I total his order and tell him I need a shipping address to give him a quote.  He gets back to me and wants me to use a shipper by the name of World Wide Logistics Solutions.  I googled the company and they look on the level, he says he will give me his cc info as soon as I quote him the order total including shipping.

For some reason this whole thing smells fishy.  Anyone ever hear of, or done business with World Wide Logistics Solutions?  The customer is supposedly in Australia, his English is alright in the first e-mails, but in the last one its like a different person typing and the grammar is all off.  So far I cant see the angle if this is a scam.

General Discussion / Re: What?

Around these parts people actually eat woodchucks, cant say as I ever had the urge to try one.  When I was a kid we could just shoot them.  Today so many houses have been built around our field that we can no longer fire a gun there.  Next year there will be an explosion in the fox population and they will thin out the chucks.  Up here in Vermont people who would fit the southern description of red neck are called woodchucks, but the red neck term is becoming more popular with the younger crowd due to Jeff Foxworthy I imagine.

I had a goat when I was a kid, that thing could climb ladders :o  If that farm is owned by an upholster I hope he, or she is a better farmer than I am.  I have been trying to grow all my vegetables for three years now and everything I plant either dies, gets eaten by critters, over grown by weeds or rots because of to much rain.  This year has been the year of the woodchuck for me, there everywhere and they can climb fences. I really hate to kill them but trapping them with a have a heart trap was not productive, so I started smoke bombing them, but there are so many of them they keep coming back.  I am thinking of changing my forum name to Black Thumb  ;D

General Discussion / Re: invisible canvas repair
July 07, 2010, 05:45:26 am
Sounds like a tall order to me.  I have in some cases been able to hide the repair in a seam, or make a new seam where the repair is, but only if a seam is close by, or their is enough slack in the canvas to take up the seam allowance in the repair.
