Thanks for the suggestions, I am the only shop in the area so I service quite a wide geographic location. Most people do bring things in and if I am on my way to Missoula which is 60 miles s one way for me, I will stop and price a job or deliver something without an added cost but, this guy is the opposite way from there. His next closest shop would be Missoula at about 80 miles one way. I know no shop from there would come up to get it.

I did discuss it with the owner. We picked it up during the middle of calving season and he thought the ranch hand would be too busy to deliver it.

Blue heelers and border collie are bread to be herding dogs they like to work and if they have it in their nature, you can't change the behaviour.  I had a black lab/ border collie cross who had more lab than collie. I bought a border collie out of working parents and had to sell him after 3 months because he would try to turn my daughter b back home when she was at the bus stop. The man who bought her owned a sheep ranch and he was amazed at this dogs inherent ability and instinct.  Get this dog a job of you want to keep him.

I live in a small rural town in Western Montana and recently picked up a couch and chair from a residence to bring back to my shop, it was a 73 mile round trip and I had to bring my full size pick up truck. I am finished with these items and have to pick up another couch and return it when I am done. What would a reasonable charge be? My partner thinks we should charge $150.00 I think that is way too much but he says it is taking an hour of drive time plus time to load and unload. I appreciate any suggestions.

I am not using any welting. I will try with a larger needle. Thanks for the input.

I am making cushions from umbrella and am having a terrible time with puckering. I am using a size 18 needle and a Juki 1541s machine. Any ideas or suggestion? Thanks.

Glad that you got them done to your satisfaction.  The extending method has worked well for me however, I might try the shaving method the next time.

I have pulled it - extruding it.  When the piece meets the end cap.  I hold the welting tight about 2 inches from the end then with needle nose pliers grab the end coming out of the piece and pull - the welting will get thinner at the end and eliminates the bulk when sewing to the end cap that also has the welting.

General Discussion / Re: How To Collect Overdue Bills
February 09, 2015, 08:31:48 pm
A follow up on my saga.  I finally received a check but for only $150.00, the total owed is $425.00 - she is going to pay the balance in a couple of weeks - wants to make sure there wouldn't be any more zipper malfunctions.  I sent a note with the latest statement telling her she never mentioned she was going to do this, I told her I was not a bank but a small business owner and if she was going to have a problem paying the bill that she could have discussed it with me and we could work out a plan.  I charged her 18% interest.  Haven't heard from her and it's been one week.  I am pretty upset, I live in a small town (2500 people) and service a geographical area of maybe 5,000 in the surrounding towns

I have learned a valuable lesson but, also struggle with not trusting people.  I don't want to seem like a hard ads but business is business.

Thank you so much for your help.  I will definitely be taking a look to see if I can find the source of the problem.

I have a Juki 1541s.  Needle size is 18 - I was thinking of going to a 14.  When you look at the holes left from the stitches, they are HUGE. I usually sew vinyl and use 18 or 20.  Not sure what the thread size is.  I can check tomorrow.  I started sewing these with a Chandler which was a lot worse.  I was thinking it might be too much pressure on the presser foot.

The Business Of Upholstery / puckering seams

I am working on patio furniture cushions with sunbrella fabric.  Horrible pickers seams I have tried increasing/decreasing pressure, lengthening stitches, and tension adjustments.  Could it be my needle size?  How do you determine what size to use? What do all those numbers /mean?
