General Discussion / working with stripes
September 21, 2017, 11:31:29 am

A few years ago I gave a quote on redoing a wing back chair with a matching footstool and a fairly large love seat with attached pillows on back.  The customer has purchased the fabric herself and when I went to pick up the pieces discovered she chose multi colored stripes that have 5 different colors in a 1 1/2 stripe!  I told her my quote was not for stripes and it would be 1.5 times the amount I quoted.  Is this too low?  Should I charge her a flat hourly rate plus whatever materials I use?  Should my shop rate be different if I am just ripping things down rather than cutting and sewing?  I am already loosing sleep over this and haven't even started!

General Discussion / boat seat blues
June 03, 2016, 09:39:00 am
I am working on a boat that has the 2 back to back seats - joined at the top then can be slid down to lay on.  I am having a heck of a time with a wrinkle right in the center where the side pieces meet the center piece - there are 3 pull strips - one between the top cushion and the main cushion and then one on each side - there is a little gap between where the "ear" of the foam butts into the pulling strip and that is where my problem is - I can stuff it with extra foam but when I pull down, the wrinkles reappear.  I will try to attach some photos but the area is navy blue - almost black - not sure if you will be able to see the problem.
Thanks!,
Liz

General Discussion / replacement foam
May 31, 2016, 08:50:22 am
I have 2 older ATV's - one is a 1991 Polaris 4x4 and the other is a 1985 Yamaha.  The foam has been totally destroyed by a bear that got into the shed and I am having a heck of a time trying to get replacements due to the age of the vehicles.
Any suggestions on where to go?  If I can't get foam, any suggestions on how to rebuild the seats?
Appreciate any ideas!
Thanks,
Liz

General Discussion / removing ink from vinyl
May 10, 2016, 08:32:36 am
Help!  I am working on a boat seat and inadvertently got ink on the vinyl (about a dime size now) - it was just a few dots then I tried to use Goof Off on it and it spread a little - also the Goof Off is taking part of the vinyl with it.  What's the best stuff to use?  Or is it hopeless?

General Discussion / sofa sleeper
April 28, 2016, 09:39:51 am
I have a sofa sleeper to reupholster - not a hide-a-bed with the mattress, this is one where the back comes down and joins the seat so the couch becomes flat.  The fabric was already off of this sofa and I can't figure out how to do the back - the customer says you can't tack the fabric all the way down because it needs to have enough fabric in the back to have ease so it can fold down.  I will try to put photos up but, would appreciate and help out there. Thanks.

General Discussion / How to sew a wege piece ,
November 04, 2015, 08:58:21 am
I am working on a boat cover and have to incorporate a pie shaped piece coming around the windshield - what is the best way to sew this?  I have tried a couple of different things but end up with an unsightly lump where the  pieces come together.  I am almost done (Yea!!) but, really need some sound advice on how to do this the right way.
Thanks,
Liz

General Discussion / boxed cushion blues
September 08, 2015, 08:42:44 am
I am working on a boxed cushion with fabric provided by the client.  It is more like drapery fabric lots of stretch to it. My problem is trying to get the plates to line up. The corners and middle are matching up nicely but the top is ending up being 1-1/2" longer when I am done. I cut them out at the same time and they are the right size. Any tricks or tips would be greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / saddle inserts
June 05, 2015, 08:52:27 am

I am doing a couch that was originally done in red vinyl and it has embroidered saddles that the client wants inserted into the new vinyl. It was originally going to be done in red leather but the red was not a good match so they chose to go with a parchment colored vinyl fabric.
What is the best way to go about doing this?  The saddles are 18" wide and 12" high.  I have a thought of just telling them the material is just too old and I can get them embroidered on the new fabric (which I think will be alot easier to do).  Any suggestions?

General Discussion / need help posting

I inadvertantly posted something in the forum that I meant to put into the general discussion - is there a way to get this moved without having to delete the message and repost a new one?
Thanks, Liz

General Discussion / mooring boat cover
May 01, 2015, 07:45:14 am
I need to give a quote for an 18 1/2' on-board Bayliner.  Any ideas on how much I should charge? What is the best fabric to use? I have made some small on boat covers using Top gun and similar poly- coated acrylic that have snapped on. This she wants to pull on and have the elastic on the bottom. I have gotten a pdf file from Sailrite and it seems pretty straight forward. Thanks.

I live in a small rural town in Western Montana and recently picked up a couch and chair from a residence to bring back to my shop, it was a 73 mile round trip and I had to bring my full size pick up truck. I am finished with these items and have to pick up another couch and return it when I am done. What would a reasonable charge be? My partner thinks we should charge $150.00 I think that is way too much but he says it is taking an hour of drive time plus time to load and unload. I appreciate any suggestions.

The Business Of Upholstery / puckering seams
January 13, 2015, 05:46:04 pm
I am working on patio furniture cushions with sunbrella fabric.  Horrible pickers seams I have tried increasing/decreasing pressure, lengthening stitches, and tension adjustments.  Could it be my needle size?  How do you determine what size to use? What do all those numbers /mean?

General Discussion / pilots seat blues.
December 05, 2014, 11:32:58 am
I am working on a pilot seat for a speed boat and have encountered a problem with wrinkles where the inside back meets the seat this is a curved area and I just can't seem to pull it out.  I have tried heating it but I can't seem to pull it out.  Any suggestions?
