General Discussion / Leaky Corners
May 01, 2014, 02:12:07 pm
So I'm not too experienced with making full camper enclosures, but I'm nearly finished with one. It looks pretty good, but somehow the corners are gappy. Like about an inch and a half between the curtain and the bimini. What's the best way to solve this...add tabs to the curtains or more fabric to the bimini?
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Mike, so you cut the fitted flap for both the fore and aft pockets? I'm doing a bimini with enclosure; the forward bimini will connect with another bimini for the aft half of the boat, and there will be another set of side curtains and an aft curtain. So what kind of flap should the aft bow of the first bimini have, fitted or straight?

Bobbin, yes, it makes sense! I'm a believer that every sleeve should have a zipper. Nothing is worse than disassembling a frame to get the bimini on/off.
I've seen it done many times where one end of the zipper is sewn directly onto the top with no reinforcement. It just seems so wrong! And I do the crow's foot stitch. However, I won't here, because the sleeve is already sewn down.

General Discussion / Bimini Question

Hi guys,
What is the best way to install a zipper in a bimini sleeve where there was none previously? There's got to be a better way than picking out the stitches.

I use a parachute bag.

http://www.amazon.com/Bucket-Boss-25005-Parachute-18-Pocket/dp/B000037X0O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394503762&sr=8-1&keywords=parachute+bag

You can separate caps, sockets, studs, eyelets, screw in studs, and I keep misc. things in the other pockets, like the other dies for the Pres N Snap tool, the rubber gasket things, etc. This way it's easy to go mobile and you can use it in the shop as well. The surplus that won't fit in the bag stays in the package on the shelf.

Sofa, she paid $225 for the chairs. She only paid $200 ea. to have them done.

I love these chairs, but get a load of what the upholsterer charged for new cushions, webbing and labor. Am I crazy, or does that seem low?

Mike,
It was chosen purely for the cost. Thanks for the heads up on alternatives. I'll check those out!

Did a cover using Sunbrella Surlast red, and it took only a few months for it to fade to pink. Is this normal for Surlast? The cover looks like it's 15 years old.

General Discussion / Re: Tool Troubles - Update
February 12, 2014, 12:13:56 pm
So nothing worked. Oiled the hell out of it, tapped it from the side in different directions with a hammer to try and loosen...bit never moved. So I took the tool apart and ordered the part that holds the bit from  ereplacmentparts.com. (there was no access hole in the back of this part so I couldn't pound the bit out from the back, which was my original plan.) Cost is $10 total, which is less than 10% of the cost of the drill. Nothing is ever easy.

Does it have to be carpet? Can you just go with vinyl? Is there a reason why it can't be vinyl? I'm curious about this because I have the same project-vinyl on top and carpet around the base. I'm recovering the whole thing, and the customer actually requested vinyl in place of the carpet.

General Discussion / Re: Sailrite

I also used to have a Sailrite knockoff. It never gave me any trouble, but it doesn't even compare to a full sized industrial. It would be like driving a Lexus around then switching to a Yugo. Chris, you're right, a Thompson Mini Walker is the same as Sailrite and all the clones. My clone brand name was Alpha Sew.

I am shocked at the number of teetotalers on this board. Especially you, Sofadoc. I could swear you were drunk while posting most of the time.   :P
I never have a problem choosing when to say separate checks or picking up the tab. I have a large family with 8 brothers, and they are the type to fight over the privilege of paying the bill. I don't know what that's about...is it an affront to your manhood if you don't pay for everybody?
