Thanks everyone. The logo is embroidered; the customer designed it himself!
June, I suspected that the length of that piece was the problem. I sew the seams with a 3/8" allowance, then trim them to almost nothing, which of course makes it a pain if you have to re-sew anything. No sew-foam.
Doyle, are you by any chance located in Pennsylvania?  :D

Thanks Chris,
I've used old pieces as a pattern before with success, but I guess I will have to make my own this time. Here is the original:

And here is the problem area on mine:

The wrinkles right at that point were a lot more severe, but I cut some excess fabric out of the curve and it got a little better but still not good enough. I was hoping to be able to salvage it, but you know how it is when you sew the same piece of vinyl too many times.

General Discussion / O Captain, My Captain's Chair
July 07, 2014, 05:02:11 am
So I'm doing a captains chair, and used the old cover as a pattern. The old chair had no welt, but the customer wants welt where there are seams (which would be both sides of the long, thin center strip).
I sewed it all together, but the inside of the chair, specifically where the arm bends (where your elbow would rest if you were sitting in the chair) is really baggy.
I deconstruct again and check my pieces against the pattern pieces. They are 100% accurate.
So, is it the welt that's hanging me up here? The seam allowance is the same, but maybe the stacking of two extra layers of vinyl are making a difference?
How do you allow for welt if you are patterning?
Thanks in advance. This thing is killing me. I'll post a pic later.

So I finished this guy's boat seats over a month ago. Called him right away, but his voice mailbox was full and couldn't leave a message. So I emailed him. He emailed back and said he'd come pick them up that weekend. That was a month ago. Another email, no response. Voice mailbox still full.
What's the next step? I could probably sell the seats, as they are from a common boat. I don't have any policy in writing about this.

Thanks Mike. Plastic seems like a good idea for this boat; it's really small. So the seam that runs along the center of the cover should also extend to the windshield piece too, right? or do you put your seams to follow the glass separation?

Hi guys,
Small bowrider with rounded (as opposed to sharp corners) windshield. As weird as it sounds, I've never done this before. How do you pattern the windshield?
Also, informal poll: do you guys use the fabric to pattern or paper/plastic?

Stapling. The worst part of a boat upholstery job, imo.
So here's what I'm working on - the curved back pieces.

Notice the hole in the center which makes everything about 300% more complicated. So I staple the stretcher down and it's tight on one side or the other. And how to get the vinyl (it's pleated) to lay flat on the curve? Any advice? Or better yet, anybody wanna come show me how it's done?  ;)

Ok, so the time is now, and I'm getting ready to do faux tuck and roll. So do you all make large panels and cut your small panels from that, or do you make them one panel at a time? Also, say my pleats are 2" wide, but the area I need to fill is 11 inches wide, what should I do...let the seam fall where it would, or try to plan something so that they're even? Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions; this is my first time!
Thanks guys!

Aj, this is the real thing; I think I'll stick to the faux method, since I'm doing the entire boat. That might take a year to stuff the individual channels! I love your work.

Thank you, thank you guys! This is exactly the info I was looking for! Now I'm excited to do the job. June, you're so right; he most certainly can afford it!

The customer has the nicest Chris Craft I've ever seen. It's a newer boat with a very classic look...wooden deck!
The seats are in perfect condition, but he feels they are too modern looking for the rest of the boat.
He wants pleats, but doesn't like the look of heat pleated vinyl, and wants wider pleats anyway.
My question is what method would you use to get a vintage pleated look? Could I simply glue the vinyl to 1/2" foam and sew lines every two inches?
Tuck and roll sounds like a lot of work. I seem to remember seeing a video on another method of getting a pleated look without seeing the thread, but I can't find that video now.
For the record, it's hard to find a picture of a vintage Chris craft with pleated seats. They just did them smooth back in the day.

General Discussion / Re: Price Estimate?

Interesting, June, that you make the bimini first then pattern for the curtains. So you don't use the dot system where, theoretically, you can pattern the whole job accurately the first time then bring it back to the boat and just install it?
I try this but there always seem to be something wrong requiring another trip to the boat.

Hmm...I'm thinking this might be a high estimate, Bobbin.

General Discussion / Price Estimate?
May 08, 2014, 06:31:22 am
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone is willing to share what they would charge (ballpark) for an enclosure with this configuration. Just the biminis and enclosure, the frame already exists. 30 gauge glass off the roll, nothing fancy. Thanks!

The side curtains are long enough from fore to aft; the problem is from around where the visor seam is sewn to a couple inches from there between the bottom of the bimini edge and the top of the side curtain. Who knows what the heck I did, but I know I'm not doing it over, so I have to fix it somehow. Tabs on the curtain is what I'm leaning toward. I'll get a photo later.
