Stapling. The worst part of a boat upholstery job, imo.
So here's what I'm working on - the curved back pieces.

Notice the hole in the center which makes everything about 300% more complicated. So I staple the stretcher down and it's tight on one side or the other. And how to get the vinyl (it's pleated) to lay flat on the curve? Any advice? Or better yet, anybody wanna come show me how it's done?  ;)

The customer has the nicest Chris Craft I've ever seen. It's a newer boat with a very classic look...wooden deck!
The seats are in perfect condition, but he feels they are too modern looking for the rest of the boat.
He wants pleats, but doesn't like the look of heat pleated vinyl, and wants wider pleats anyway.
My question is what method would you use to get a vintage pleated look? Could I simply glue the vinyl to 1/2" foam and sew lines every two inches?
Tuck and roll sounds like a lot of work. I seem to remember seeing a video on another method of getting a pleated look without seeing the thread, but I can't find that video now.
For the record, it's hard to find a picture of a vintage Chris craft with pleated seats. They just did them smooth back in the day.

General Discussion / Price Estimate?
May 08, 2014, 06:31:22 am
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone is willing to share what they would charge (ballpark) for an enclosure with this configuration. Just the biminis and enclosure, the frame already exists. 30 gauge glass off the roll, nothing fancy. Thanks!

General Discussion / Leaky Corners
May 01, 2014, 02:12:07 pm
So I'm not too experienced with making full camper enclosures, but I'm nearly finished with one. It looks pretty good, but somehow the corners are gappy. Like about an inch and a half between the curtain and the bimini. What's the best way to solve this...add tabs to the curtains or more fabric to the bimini?
Has this ever happened to anyone else?

General Discussion / Bimini Question
April 16, 2014, 02:25:50 pm
Hi guys,
What is the best way to install a zipper in a bimini sleeve where there was none previously? There's got to be a better way than picking out the stitches.

General Discussion / And I Thought I Was Cheap.

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/before-after-kaycees-customized-kofod-larsen-chairs-200577

I love these chairs, but get a load of what the upholsterer charged for new cushions, webbing and labor. Am I crazy, or does that seem low?

General Discussion / Red Surlast Turned to Pink
February 18, 2014, 07:27:53 am
Did a cover using Sunbrella Surlast red, and it took only a few months for it to fade to pink. Is this normal for Surlast? The cover looks like it's 15 years old.

General Discussion / Tool Troubles
January 26, 2014, 04:57:29 pm
So there's a screwdriver bit stuck in the collar of my cordless Makita driver/drill. I've tried pulling on it with a pliers (while pulling the collar). I've tried cursing; that didn't work either. Any suggestions?

General Discussion / Why So Many Curves?? Help!!
January 17, 2014, 12:26:16 pm
Ok, sewed the cover for these (there are two) but am having a devil of a time getting it on. What happens is that no matter which side you start on, when you get to the other side, the boxing gets horribly twisted for like the last 12 inches or so.

Feels like wrestling alligators is easier than this. Any tips?

For only about $1500. Now isn't that a bargain? I got this video link in a Sailrite email:

http://www.sailrite.com/How-to-Make-a-Power-Boat-Cover-Video#.UsVpCOl3vIU

And it's a pretty good how to video. But realistically, to do your own cover you'd need a sewing machine (cheapest one at Sailrite is $739), thread ($40), Sunbrella (around 14 yards for the boat in this video $350), then your little things like double stick tape, marking utensils, maybe a hot knife, and snaps. Then of course there are other considerations such as time and space. Oh yeah, and learning to sew.

I'm not worried about going out of business because of the DIYer's, are you?

Hi guys,
I've got the interior of an old small airplane from the early 80s. When I took the old fabric off of the armrests (which came off of the doors of the plane), there was a material that I'd never seen before. It's black and fibrous but has a hard texture. I kind of think it may be asbestos? I've seen glimpses of it on home improvement shows and that's what it looks like.
How can I know for sure? I'm going to take a picture and upload it later.
Also, if it is, how safe is it to work on? The pieces are small; not really armrests but more like hand grips for the door.

Thanks.

General Discussion / Cushion Troubles
November 22, 2013, 09:42:53 am
So I'm doing these cabin cushions. The originals were covered in 1970's burnt orange chenille (top and boxing) and the bottom is vinyl.
The customer picked a microfiber fabric, and I figured I'd do the bottoms in vinyl. Sewed the welt to the top microfiber plate and the bottom vinyl plate, and while the vinyl piece looks fine, the welt has twisted on the microfiber plate and not it's won't lie flat and is misshapen.
How can I remedy this?
At first I thought it would straighten out once the boxing was sewn on, but when you compare the top to the bottom, they don't match at all (the microfiber appears shrunken), and I'm so afraid the corners will get twisted on the finished product.

General Discussion / Porch Enclosure - How To?
November 18, 2013, 11:00:49 am
Looking to do something like this to my house:

How would you attach it to the bottom? I don't really want to screw a bunch of hardware on my porch, as the enclosure will only be for the winter to keep the snow off of the porch.

At the top, I was thinking j channel.  Any thoughts?

This is my house:

And I'm pretty happy, because I've not had insurance for 4 years.  And it's cheap.

General Discussion / What Have I Gotten Myself Into??
October 31, 2013, 02:12:36 pm

Bar Stools, 10 of 'em. The customer wants them covered in vinyl. I'm using Enduratex Independence vinyl. The back is so full and almost round. The fabric gets stapled to the bottom. It's even worse than a Seadoo seat! So I figure I can't do it with one piece of vinyl (I tried, with heat and pulling, etc.), so it will have to be seamed. Where would you put the seams and how many would you put in? I want to divide it into three pieces. Would that look wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The "GREEN" Room! / I Don't Do Couches
October 24, 2013, 06:10:10 pm
But I made an exception for a regular customer. Before was nasty stained ripped microfiber. He was using it as waiting area seating in his restaurant:

and after in black vinyl:

This was tough because the cushions were not loose. So I had to do the gusset thing.

General Discussion / Winter Cover Time
October 17, 2013, 09:48:29 pm
Hi Guys,
Wondering what does everyone use for support under their winter boat covers? I'm in the northeast where we get plenty of snow, so this question is directed mainly to the Yankees of the forum.  :) Oh, and I should specify I work with mainly smaller boats (17-25 ft) Bayliners, Maxum, Larson, etc.
Thanks!

General Discussion / Can This Be Salvaged? Emergency!
September 27, 2013, 07:39:00 am
Ok, so back to this Roman shade from hell. I used Aleene's fabric fusion glue to attach the wooden battens to the fabric. After the glue dried and I turned the fabric/lining assembly right side out, there are a few spots where the glue seeped through and saturated the fabric.(This didn't happen when I tested it) It appears as dark hardened spots. The fabric is a heavy velour type of drapery fabric, solid dark color.
Is there anything that can be done?
The damage is limited to the bottom 1/3 of the shade. What do you think of seaming a new piece of fabric horizontally to replace the bad piece? Will that look too weird, or do I have to go deep(er) into the hole for this job?

General Discussion / No Big Deal, Just an Appendectomy
September 17, 2013, 09:25:34 am
Here's what they say: "Oh, it's laparascopic surgery...small incision, no big deal." Yeah, right. This is my second day home and I feel like crap. I think I could've handled recovery much better if I were younger. Guess some of these jobs will just have to wait.

General Discussion / Anyone Ever Make a Roman Shade?
September 06, 2013, 06:01:22 pm
If so, any words of wisdom? There seem to be lots of different ways to make one. I just want to make sure it folds properly.
Also, it needs to be 62 inches wide, finished. How would you seam the fabric - one seam down the middle, or big center panel with 2 narrow panels flanking it?
