General Discussion / Upholster's Picks
January 16, 2015, 10:09:08 am
I'm not a die hard football fan but can't help but watch.  I like Rodgers to beat Seahawks - hope the injury is not a factor,  and I hate Brady because he works near the Red-Socks -

Looking for picks here and since money isn't at stake what's your favorites - I'd like to see  Green bay + Indianapolis advance -

My own chair - found at the curb 20 years ago - finally with these off days  re-glued + recovered it after a friend gave me a few yards of mohair - the Mrs. liked the color.  Great fabric - doesn't leave a print mark like velvet - the buttons were a pain because the fabric was thick. Sewed the seat corners - too thick to fold fabric over and pleat - added cotton + dacron over old fillings -  Still have to do some touch up on the wood - new life for an oldie but goodie - it's headed into the L/R -
the back rest is early ergonomics

A grand jury did their best - now far from peaceful in the big cities.  Gathering crowds - violence - looting won't change the decision.  The loss of property and the feeling of disorder is for another time in history - not now !
The small businesses burning - no words - just a disgrace -

Pain in the neck matching but came out pretty good otherwise customer was asking for repl. Particle board unit and the foot broke out the side. Inserted in a solid maple triangle block so the screw in foot could be re-drilled.

The Business Of Upholstery / Computer Issue
November 06, 2014, 03:26:19 am
The computer has run fine since I bought this HP - w/Windows - 3 years ago. Yesterday I booted up and things weren't right - very slow - flashing screens.  I was able to back up recent work then deleted cookies, browsing, and recycle bin - then ran a malware scan. Security Essentials found and deleted a virus called Trojan win 32 Kovter.c
Nothing in my business has caused more stress than this computer trouble.  Not knowing what to do is difficult.  After the virus was gone - I realized it made changes to settings. I restored to Nov 2nd and things look OK now.  Stress is not trying to get a job out and deal with crazy customers - it's what to do when your computer isn't operating correctly.  Want to know how dependent you are on a computer - deal with a glitch -

The title is misleading  ;)
A friend/ upholster stopped over yesterday and asked me to look at some wood legs he needs to change on a sofa.  He brought me to a site I'd never seen and thought it may be beneficial to know about if you haven't shopped there already.

Seems very good for legs - anyone know of this site ?

The Business Of Upholstery / Favorite Vehicle
August 26, 2014, 10:19:02 am
I drive a jeep and use it for smaller pick ups and deliveries.  I have a ford van 250 and it's great for the big stuff but two vehicles are too expensive lately. I want to reduce down to one vehicle.   Please some recommendations and advice.  Tahoe - Caravan ?  All wheel or 4 wheel is important here in NY -

Thanks,

General Discussion / Pain in the

I priced this repair at $ 125.00 - it wasn't until I opened up the fabric did I realize how torn up the wood work was.  No chance to repair - had to replace the end sections.  A lot of work for small fee.  Kept my original price - customer ahead of me this time.

General Discussion / Poorly Made
July 04, 2014, 02:22:39 pm
This was a repair from earlier this week.  Leather covered, made in Brazil - adjustable head-rests.  The chrome leg twisted and broke off. The frame was made of slats with the bark still on.  1/2 staples securing the wood members.  Undersized lumber - 3/16th plywood.  Not meant to last.  I added 8 pieces of wood, and some metal plates.  What are these manufacturers thinking ?

I use Windows live on MS 7 - however I'm helping a friend set up a new computer with windows 8.  We opened outlook mail from the app screen but I can't seem to find/install the tool/file ribbon that goes across the top to check accounts, add e-mail addresses, etc.  Please help if you understand my issue -

I need a piece of black leather for the top of an antique desk.  Previous supplier changed policy and only sells 1/2 hides now.  I need a piece 38 in. x 22 in. - any suppliers would be greatly appreciated -

General Discussion / Thinners
March 11, 2014, 01:16:00 pm
I was running low on lacquer thinner and didn't need enough poisons to make an order so I picked up a gallon of lacquer thinner at the local hardware store  - the can was labeled Gemini.  The most ineffective thinner I ever bought.  I labeled the can "furniture wash" will never purchase that brand again.  I had never used Gemini before and it cost over $21.00 - so tried another brand called Crown - it worked fine.  Back to work !

General Discussion / Marking / Outlining
March 04, 2014, 05:50:39 am
What are some favorite ways to mark fabrics - both light and dark - for cutting straight lines and patterns ?  I have round chalk, tailors flat chalk, ball point pen, and a wax crayon, and dislike some characteristics of each.  Am I missing one that can become my go to marking aid ?

A customer sent me a file in the program Publisher.  I have Office but not Publisher.  I went looking on the MS web site for a free viewer - couldn't find one.  Does anyone know how I can open the Publisher file ?

Thanks

General Discussion / Service Needed
February 18, 2014, 11:32:59 am
Today I received a work order for what I think is a marshal unit wrapped in Dacron.  Look at the directions that came with the assignment and tell me if it's clear to you what they are asking ?

There was a photo send of a hand reaching into a cushion and these directions =

This view shows the underside of the foam inside the top seat envelope. One of the two deep folds that prompted the repair-call is clearly visible in this foam layer.
Important: the client/ owner of the sofa stated that upon opening the shipping box, the fold was not there, so it developed over it's short time in use and by being used.
This determines that the proper course of correction is to RETRAIN the foam to 'forget' the fold it had 'memorized' for this short duration. This is because the foam was cured before the fold was created. (If new foam were used and immediately folded, it would always 'remember' the folded shape by curing in that shape and thereby be deemed defective.) The foam being then established as NOT defective, First the bottom skin of the envelope needed to be spray-glued to the foam layer beneath it to create a substrate that would hold the upper foam into position.
Next, the top foam layer was stretched back into proper position and adhered to the bottom skin also using spray adhesive.
The top foam layer now being in position, the envelope skins were all re-stitched into their intended positions and dust coverings all put back into place.

Does anyone work for movers.  A driver just dropped off this chair and said he tried to repair both back legs but they are not holding.  He broke the arm carrying it into the shop.

General Discussion / Technical Bulletin 117
December 02, 2013, 11:01:04 am
I'm wondering when some good news will surface for tradesmen.  If there isn't already enough stuff to look out for when re-doing a piece of furniture - I'm watching cable the other night and the show was regarding the fire retardant in furniture.
They say it is air bourn when you disturb the filling ?  Anybody heard of this ?  (TB-117)
Should I up my life insurance now or maybe I'm not insurable any more ?  Lets see - dust, urine, mold, lacquer, paint remover, thinners, solvents, saw dust, and now TB-117 - does anyone know why we're in this business ?

General Discussion / Costs

I must not have noticed my rates aren't high enough.    This morning we brought the car into Chrysler - goodness forbid if my wife's car won't open when she touches the handle.  My van of course isn't so complicated.  Anyway labor rate is $ 172.00 / hour plus parts.  We have the extended warranty - so worst case is the $ 100.00 deductible but I'm still shaking my head over these rates - they blurt out 172 like it's nothing -   According to my rate my prices are c. 1990. I try to be competitive but no one else is playing along.  Rate hike - something else to think about today !
