The "GREEN" Room! / Fabricating a bucket seat
May 20, 2013, 01:39:21 pm
Rich asked me for a tutorial on facebook. Here's some pictures I have of the process. First the finished seat-

It started out as an old boat frame. Was about 40" between the bends. The bends were 8" radius. This was attempt #2, #1 broke at a snap hole that was in the frame. Had to start again with a bar without holes. I was guessing at 40" being enough I held a tape around me as a chair and it seemed to be a good number, and we had the bars laying around. To get the curve between the leg bends I put it in the crown-arch and ran it through, got to the end and tightened the nut a 1/4 turn and ran it through again. Did that many times. When it got close I man-handeled it to bring it closer together. Thats when I broke the first bar.

You can see my Fabrication Fluid in that shot. Took quite a few to get the job done.

The upper part was a straight bar bent in the same fashion with the crown-arch. In this shot I taped them together and tried to imagine it with foam on it. I pop riveted a small piece of aluminum to the upper bar and the lower bar to stabilize it. Then I made a quick paper pattern of the lower piece and cut a piece of HDPE plastic about 1/16" thick from the pattern. Then I put seam tape on the bar and stuck the plastic to it. I stapled the plastic to the plywood base and pop riveted the plastic to the bar. At this point it was very stable and made working with it easier. I did the same for the top piece.

The it only needed foam. I cut channels in the foam to allow for the thickness of the tubing. It was 3" super soft foam which made upholstering it difficult. Harder foam would have made it simpler.

Then I took some dust cloth and glued it to the foam and the frame to keep the foam in place and give a little more structure to the soft foam. Then I put 1/2" foam on top of the dustcloth. Then the pattern.

I was going to put a seam and a stretcher in where the lower bar went on the inside back, but I wanted the smooth look to match my boat (more on the boat at a later date) This also made the upholstery more difficult. Had I put in a stretcher I would have pop riveted velcro to the bar and sewed the other half to the stretcher multiple times. The stretcher would have needed to be shaped or cut every couple inches. I would've gone with the cuts to simplify it.

I don't have any sewing pictures as that was done by my wonderful and talented coworker. Turned out awesome any way. Here's the back-

When you see the boat it'll make sense. It looks so bitchin' I had to dress up to sit in it-

The "GREEN" Room! / Covered Wagon
January 29, 2013, 07:16:24 pm
We did a covered wagon tarp for a guy. He's a freshly retired farmer who had a set of wheels and decided to build a wagon. A big one.

how it went home.

It was a lot if fun. Longest I've ever worked on one pattern. About 10 hours. Was very difficult to pattern from inside. I needed a cherry picker. It was about 40 yards of treated cotton duck. About 50 lbs, way lighter than I thought it'd be. Held on with side release buckles and strapping.

The "GREEN" Room! / Mondo Mainship Canvas

Yaowza! More convertible architecture.

With the paper. Half pattern.

Canvas without the snaps. Forgot to get a picture fully installed.

Can't wait to see it in the water. And watch him try to dock it in the wind. The ballcap thing worked out awesome.

How'd You Do That??? / How I make patterns for vinyl
April 20, 2012, 07:56:29 pm
I made this post and thought I'd archive it here. Hope it helps somebody. Good luck!

I was making a motorcycle seat yesterday and thought I'd show you how I make patterns. Forgive me, I'm on my iPod so they aren't thumbnails and I hope they aren't out of order.

http://i.imgur.com/GXkCP.jpg
Here's the dust cloth stapled to the foam. I cut half the cloth how I like it.

http://i.imgur.com/o8Gyr.jpg
Fold the cloth in half, feel where it lays nice on the other side of the foam.

http://i.imgur.com/et1Qb.jpg
Cut the other half of the cloth. I might cut the original layer too if I want. While its folded in half cut a nice big lead on your white pencil and give a good gob of spit on it (or I keep a wet teabag nearby and roll the lead around on it) then put it inbetween the two layers to mark a reference mark on both sides at the same time.

http://i.imgur.com/FuxAc.jpg
Now that my face piece is symmetrical (along with my reference marks) I only half to make half the border pattern. I'm not worried that the cloth is all wrinkled as long as it lays flat along the seam. I'll pull the piss out of the vinyl to get it over the hump.

http://i.imgur.com/STlsC.jpg
Tadaa! We seamed it at center  because we were given a tiny scrap of vinyl and we had to make do. Normally we would have mirrored it without the seam.

I'm not saying this is THE way to pattern. It works for me. I've never had much luck doing it like Darren says unless it's a very simple thing. Also it would be easier to do it that way if I was sewing it I think. You could sew a bit,  try it on, sew a bit more...ect. I usually make a pattern then run down to the marina and upholster it a week later.

And I guess it's not really a boat seat, but I hope it helps!

I went last week for a quick day and saw the sights. Nothing much different or exciting. This was the nicest that I was in

http://www.regalboats.com/46SportCoupe

Nice boat. I think they wanted 1.3m and I think I heard the guy say it was used. I didn't buy it.

I was mostly looking for design ideas for any future boats I may own, and noticed a suprising lack of upholstery in new little bow riders. No sidepads, bench seats, with what felt to me like crappy foam. And everything was carbon fibre. A couple stood out.

This one was cool with the tuck and roll

And I liked this one-

and this was jazzy

Mostly everything flashy was a wake boat now.

My favorite part though is seeing how awful the canvas is-

God, take a second and adjust the damn thing. You're there for 2 weeks.

and the upholstery.

Some odd boats-

cute little guy. $60,000 I think.

And this weird thing-

a catamaran that slides together so it can trailer, with a tent trailer on the back.

The cover for the cockpit is a truck bed cover. Resourceful anyway.

I'm living in the future, baby!

The "GREEN" Room! / KMV restore

This guy showed up and wanted a top he could stand under

After scratching my head for a few minutes trying to figure out something nice, the Sewer says "Why don't you take off that stupid hardtop and build a nice normal top? .....did I say that out loud?" And the guy goes for it! And gives us carte blanche on the interior!

hurtin' for certain

This bench was completely redesigned and now has cup holders. Oooo ahhhh.

I really like these seats. I'd have them in my house even.

and the top

Which is now snapped on as opposed to these things

Buttons! Seriously. The canvas had button holes sewn in that slipped over these studs. ??? Craziness.

General Discussion / Bend arc radius?
November 26, 2011, 07:09:23 am
Welcome to the 21st century! I'm the proud new operator of a bend arc and crown arc-er-doie! I just have to figure out it's secrets....What radiuses do you guys use? Mine has a 12" and it seems really big. My old wheel was around 8".

And when you crown the bars do you do it before you bend the legs or after?

We went to an auction at a boat factory that went tits up. Mostly we bought mountains of foam and vinyl. Some stuff went pretty cheap, two bosch foam cutters went for $50. I don't think anyone knew what they were.

First there was soyabean foam, now this says they're making foam from pulp paper waste-

I bet they find a way to increase the price anyway.

I'm about to start reupholstering one of those old thymie prams (you listening Rich?) including building a new hood. It's the kind with the hinged spreader bars that keep the canvas taught. Anybody ever done one? The upholstery is straight forward but the hood scares me a bit. Especially the lining. It'll be sunbrella and thats all I know. I haven't even taken it apart yet. I'll have some pictures next week.

Our supplier is flogging this stuff, so we got a roll to try. Anyone know about it? Is it just the Italian rip off of recacril? The boss says he tried it years ago and it faded....

I had a vision last week and couldn't get it out of my head till I built it. So I built it.

A 'y' type frame upside down and kind of inside out.

This is almost what it'll be like- with window material above.

finished pattern

inside view. The travel cover posts will support the dodger. I didn't have enough slide track today, but thats what it'll mount to, to let it slide forward to rest on the nose.

Hot damn! I'll show the finished product as soon as it's made. Giggedy! Nice when things work like you hope!

This is a cross post from the green room- but it seems real empty in there, and I wanna see what you guys think!
