General Discussion / Stockinette
June 06, 2015, 10:55:58 am
hi guys its been a while

can i ask a question to the upholstery guys n gals please.

I have completed a boat interior in a fabric , the foam was new and i covered it in dacron. The customer is complaining the covers are rucking on top causing ripples in the covers, i'm thinking that the stabilising coating on the inside of the fabric is sticking on the dacron and wondered if fitting Stockinette over the foam will help ?

General Discussion / Jobs in canvas/upholstery
August 26, 2014, 02:56:58 am
Hiya all

Here in the Uk I am thinking of going for broke next season and hiring canvas workers to take the pressure off me :-)

I am thinking of getting a US canvas guy or gal to work the summer season over here but i'm wondering how canvas workers are paid over there ? do they get a good weekly wage or a basic wage and bonus on completion of a job ?

Also if there is an experienced canvas person who wants to work in the UK for the season March to October get in touch .

 Ok guys here's a freebie ..

I had a job recovering some car seats and the base foam was shot, that mean't I had to make new bases.
My choice was to go buy a band saw or use what i had in the shop ..

I have one of Kens foam saws which is good for boat seat foam but it isn't quite up to it for car seat bases because they really need to be more accurate.

this is what i had to work with.

this is what I made with my english redneck engineering skills.. all it is, is a plywood base about 1/4" thicker than the base of the foam saw so that the saw base is held tightly and more importantly square to the blade. I then waxed the wood to make the foam slide easier .. Ta Dah! a redneck bandsaw for about $2

and this is how it all ended up, my first auto seats from snuggtopz.com ..

General Discussion / Help !! bucket helm seat ?
June 25, 2013, 02:06:55 am
hi guys n gals.

its been 2 years since I upholstered a bucket helm seat and i think i'm patterning myself into a corner ?
Knowing how great you guys are could someone point me in the right direction please ?

Here's what i have done, I have 2 seats the same to do so only stripped one so far. the seats have a seam inside and outside the arm and i understand why.
I patterned the arms but made the patterns baggy and taped up the baggy parts to cope with the curves and want to rely on the vinyl stretch to pull into shape.

another thing i did was moved the seam higher on the arm , was that a mistake ?

the baggy pattern works ok does anyone else make baggy patterns like this ? but i really wanted to make the arms without seams in the middle is this possible or am i buying into a world of pain ?

one place that is causing me problems making the arm in 4 parts is the front where the arm meets the base. even taking up the pattern baggyness it's still hard to pattern that shape.. ?

Would I just be better off cutting the old cover apart and using that as a pattern ??

General Discussion / new job next week
June 04, 2013, 02:04:51 am

hiya Peeps

I have to cover these next week and haven't done a bucket seat for about 2 years !!  it is seamed on the inside and outside of the arm but i want to do it without a seam. Any advice would be appreciated.
What i plan on doing is making a baggy pattern on the inside of the arm, lay on the pattern material and staple up the baggy bit where the seam would usually fall then transfer this to the vinyl.
I know it works doing it that way because thats how i was taught but does anyone else do it that way ?

General Discussion / no enthusiasm
November 25, 2012, 02:46:01 am
hiya

I know its not just me this happens to but how do you guys keep yourself going
when your enthusiasm levels are at zero and work takes forever to do because you
would rather be surfing the net or drinking coffee or finding some other task to
take you off the sewing ?

General Discussion / getting a boat top tight ?
April 24, 2012, 01:03:07 pm
hiya all

I have a top to quote for that I haven't made before, nothing unusual there :-)

the boat is a Sealine 390 statesman and the cover fits between a track along
the fly bridge and a horizontal frame.

these are very similar boats

I dont know if this is an English thing or not but the current top is drum tight
because the bow pocket is laced together with bungee and sew on hooks.

unfortunately the customer wants zipped bow pockets and i'm not sure i can get the top tight
enough with zippers ? are there any tricks to getting these tops tight ?

General Discussion / A demonstration piece
March 17, 2012, 01:51:29 pm

hi Guys

I will be opening a river side workshop come chandlers mid April
but it is quite small 30 x 20.

What I am thinking is i need to make a demonstration piece of furniture
that looks a bit like a boat seat but I'm not so good at design from scratch.
Usually my designs are organic, I start sewing and see where I end up heheh

I did think about making a knee rise curved bench seat under or attached to the
serving counter but I think thats not practical as customers wouldn't
be able to get near the counter.
Then I thought maybe a round seat in the middle of the shop with a flat display
table on top ?

Anyone got any good ideas ? I could also make a nice piece that could stay outside
when the shop is open for people to sit on ?

What I dont want is for it to look like a car bench seat dumped onto a frame.

General Discussion / Xtream seal
February 22, 2012, 12:20:52 pm
does anyone know who makes Xtream seal ?

was talking to my UK supplier today and they said they can't
find out who actually makes it. because they want 5ooo yards
their US contacts won't tell them who makes it as they want the
business.

I asked if i found out for them could i get a really good deal on it
and they said yes :-)
