I've been in the biz over 12 years and am in need of your advice. I took on a job to recreate a '50's ottoman in vinyl. THe original was stuffed with wood wool or sometimes called excelsior. I've tried wetting it with a water & glycerin mixture and re-stuffing into new cover..with horrible results..lumpy and out of shape.
Next I bought 4" thick 7# bonded foam, cut slightly smaller that cover, hard to get it into the cover. Didn't use vacu-form as it's really dense foam and didn't think it would compress. So I removed it, trimmed another 1/2" around the perimeter. It fit but now have the gap to fill between foam and vinyl. ARGH! Oh, and there are 2 sets of buttons that go through the entire piece. So what would you suggest? Heat? Vacu-form? Dacron on the sides?
Thanks, Debra

The Business Of Upholstery / Re: Speaking of "Burnout"

mike802>I can relate. I have been in business 14 years and have taken only one vacation, that was 2 years ago. I have 20 jobs backed up in my shop because I am struggling to get motivated to do them. Had one customer post a bad review on Angies List because I was 4 weeks past my deadline. That's another problem.. setting unrealistic deadlines. The customers I have are usually very understanding and not in a hurry for their pieces. I love what I do but I feel like I need to re-set my brain. Part time helpers have cost me more money than the jobs because I have to re-do their mistakes. Enough complaining, but any tips on how to "keep-on keepin' on" would be appreciated. -Debra

A customer is looking to have this redone and I think it is vacu-formed which is not in my expertise. but if anyone has some other ideas, I'm open for suggestions. Thanks Debra
