the  mfg. out there don`t care  about the future just  a big bank  account .

yes plywood can be  a good  chair frame  use the  good grade and put together right. plywood is  like  furniture  there are different grades and with a good grade  it can be  a good frame .
i have been doing  upholstery  for 51 years . mostly furniture and did  some factory work in  early 60`s where we used  hardwood  stapled together frames . oake was the cheapest frames   blackgun maple  was  the better frames  dal joints  and braces were glued in .those frames are made  today but a couch frame alone would be more than a  fully covered  couch in a  low end store  lie  Farmer badcock  railway freight  and such  stores .  that is what the majority buy`s  so that is what they sell  some one is going to make and sell it  . the  un educated  people on  what is good and bad will not listen  the going to buy the cheep stuff  . i just sold my upholstery shop because there isn't enough  good  money making jobs  out there and at 69 1/2 years old  it hit at a good time in my life . most  furniture stores are  junk by the truck load .

40 to 50 years ago  if it was imported bit was  expensive  and good . now it is cheep and junk . mostly paying for freight and  store profit  . take that away from cost of Mfg.  you  can`t build it here for that . they have no  quality control  no waging hour law  and no  union .
a lady came into my shop  looking for a  small piece of  fabric to cover a  chair  and 1 inch  foam pad  when i told her $10.00  she wanted  me to  come down on the price . she just left  wal mart  with piece of  fabric   did she ask for a reduced price . bet she didn`t  i was so pissed  i told her no  and just forge t about it and walked off . her  husban  said that was ok would pay it . i almost told hem  hell no .bu i didn`t .

i have don that and  it still take up my time and when they  learn a little they go open a  shop and don`t do a good job . that take work i could get and and make the upholster business look bad .
if i was going to do any training  they would sign  a  agreement not to go out and open a shop  and use my name as a trainer until i approved it . and then not in  the area . like selling a business  and signing a  agreement not to the  opening another shop in the county and  surrounding county for 5 years .

with raveling  material i  serge the edges and thin material  i lay it on a  heavier material and  sew or serge the edges together . or you  could  put  thin re may on the back  . ( re may is a  foam with a  clout on back  used in auto  work )
