I broke the needle I had in it. The one I  put in it, I had used to sew several heavy leather aprons, it was quite dull. I put in a fresh one and the machine just seems to run better. It could also be me learning to master a clutch motor?

 Howdy neighbors! I am across the river, about 12 miles outside of St. Louis, in Illinois. The weather is about the same here, we tend to be a little warmer close to big city. Good to know some local people. I am a beginner in this, if you have any recommendations of local suppliers, I would appreciate any guidance. When you don't know exactly what you need, a salesperson can be very helpful. If you would rather pm me than post online, that would be fine.

 Thank you for all the help. I have ordered new needles (size 22). A sharp needles makes quite a difference. I wish I would have ordered more things with the needles, shipping is ridiculous. Half of what they cost.

  I need to buy some needles for my machine a Seiko (STH-8BLD-3). I manly sew vinyl and sew foam. The machine came with a few needles. They say Organ 22 on them. The booklet calls for DPx17. What sizes should I have? How does the numbering system work for needles? Thanks for helping out a newbie.

 I am working on rebuilding a set of bench seats from a 1953 Chrysler car. They have coil springs. In between the burlap  and the stuffing is something that looks like a flex o lator or perma mesh. Burlap with fine wires running thru it. The thick cord that connects the fine wires is broke in several places. This is not like a new seat with springs attached to the mesh, just laying on top of the coil springs. I was given advice to not worry about this and just wrap the top of the seat in heavy canvas to replace broken pieces? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have used the 3/8 to 1/2 inch jute insulation with the aluminum foil on it. Seems to be a good product, but a little pricey. $27-30 for a piece 4'x6'. What does everyone else use? New cars use a jute without any foil. Does anyone know where you can buy in bulk?

Thank you for the replies. With more experience, I guess a person can feel a material and know what it will do. I don't have a showroom nearby to go look at material, and no need to invest in a large sample book.

I am a newbie. I have been practicing on whatever vinyls I can find. Bought a pile of scraps from an upholstery  shop. Now I am interested in trying some projects. The problem is when I look at suppliers, I don't know what gauges are good or too thin. I have some vinyls that are too thin (cheap) and some seems really thick. I am mostly interested in automotive grade. Please give advice on what to look for.

I talked to Sid Chavers's partner (sorry forgot his name) while in Louisville,Ky a few years ago. He was the one recommended removing springs. I have watched his videos several times.

When i purchased this car, it had been a flood of 1993 victim. The interior was full of dried mud. The car had sat in field for several years. I stripped the seats of all cotton, fabric, and varmints nests. I put a piece of cheap foam and wrapped them in cloth to be usable. Not much support. My question, does anyone have a system of replacing the cotton and hair? example 1 inch of this, 1 inch of that. Can I use a high density foam on top of the springs to bring back firmness? One person recommended remove springs and build back up with foam? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
