General Discussion / Upholstery Gun
April 12, 2014, 11:41:17 pm
I am wanted to purchase an upholstery gun and stapler. I have been using the BEA long nose at my class, however to purchase this model and silent compressor is quite expensive.

I have looked at JA Milton, however does anyone else have any other recommendations.

Thanks

General Discussion / Fabric weight for upholstery
April 12, 2014, 11:37:42 pm
I have made a couple of forays to ebay to buy remnant fabric to upholster my vintage armchairs. I have two Parker Knolls, my Dad's fireside chair = comfy, and two other old fashioned chairs.

It is difficult (for me) to buy online because I am not sure what minimum weight my fabric should be. I always email the seller to check if it is suitable for upholstery.... and one has arrived that I consider pretty flimsy, i.e. great for curtains. It is also possible to get some heavy weight tapestry-style fabric, but will this look very heavy - especially as I live in France and this might look like chairs in an overcoat in summer?!

When a seller says 'medium weight' cotton what does this mean? I can get them to weigh it and work out the price per yard.... if so what is the minimum weight I should aim for?

Hope someone with experience can shed a simple weight formula. In great expectations..... and gearing up to sew at last!

Am just setting up my own business in upholstery and would be grateful if anyone can recommend good upholstery fabric suppliers.

Also if anyone can recommend an air staple gun.

Thanks

General Discussion / Sagging Sofa
April 12, 2014, 11:11:00 pm
We purchased a couple of Red leather sofas from a very well known retailer a couple of years ago, but I've found that one side of the sofa has started to sag.... (Might be my large butt's fault).

So I have to remove the base fabric to have a look see at how they have constructed the sofa, I'm hoping it's just a case of replacing the webbing, but we'll see.

I can't get to the "Springing" any other way, because the way the sofa is constructed, pain of having leather sofas.

I'll keep you all posted as to how it's going.

General Discussion / replacing feather fillings
April 12, 2014, 10:58:32 pm
I have a nice sofa from Heals, that just needs recovering and the cushions refilling. The old cushions are feather and are pretty shot. I would like to replace with foam and feather, but the prices I see are so variable I don't know what to expect.

Are there any recommended firms that do a good work for filling the inners? The cushions themselves are quite large, about 32"x28", and I did wonder if feather & foam is the best for this size.

Thanks.

I find myself doing more and more double diamond and square pleat work lately and I am thinking of going the route of a double needle long arm. Im looking at a highlead right now and may pull the trigger on one next week.

Any of you guys and gals have a double needle long arm? Any thoughts on them? All help and advice is welcomed.
