General Discussion / Re: Cell phones
February 12, 2014, 02:09:29 pm
Well - I had to make a NEW RULE that there are no cell phones at the table. I got tired of our family time being interupted. Prince Charming is a district manager so his phone is nearly glued to his head - if we are having a conversation & he answers it while we're talking??? I just walk away....Dang things are more like a leash then a convenience.

I am originally from southern California - moved to middle Tennessee in 1988. Tuesday morning? It was MINUS 2 degrees. MINUS! I have never been this cold in my life. And it's never been this cold the whole time I've lived here. I will be so happy to see spring this year! So happy.

Great fix! Looks fantatic. My sister & her ex-husband worked for a moving company (HE still does) and you can't beleive the little piddy stuff that "customers" put claims in for! I can only judge other people on what I do myself - but I know I have nicked, knocked, scratched and torn my own stuff just moving it around from room to room. (Mainly because I don't wait for Prince Charming to be home to help me) Heck, I even mark the walls using a vacuum! But when you are paying someone else to do the moving, you expect perfection. And whatever the hired help damages is always worth more after it's damaged...At least that's what my sister said. And just think about what movers MOVE. Lot's of stuff I'd never attempt. We had professional movers when we moved from AL to TN and I thought those boys were going to cry when they saw my sewing room...........  ;)

OMHeck those are the cutest thing! I had to show Prince Charming these. I hope he takes the hint & makes one for me!

Doyle, I have a Janome MyLock 204D serger - it is used for clothing exclusively. It's loud as hell even when I am only sewing regular fabric or jersey knits! If I use any other fabric than apparel, it eats the blades - I mean that they go dull VERY fast and have to be replaced. It's just cheaper to replace them then sharpen them. I think that if I used upholstery fabric or anything heavy it would just give up.

I also have the servo motor on my Wilcox & Gibbs. I love it. No noise! (My normal daytime job is working at a landfill. I hear heavy equipment all day. Back-up beepers, grousers, tracks, trucks......noise all day. that silent motor is a blessing when I'm using it.)

I looked back on my old posts & I think it's bobbin that has a Wilcox & Gibbs overlocker. You may try & contact her & see if she can better answer your question.

I know that doesn't help you much, but it's the best I can do. (sorry!)

I have not tried using thread that heavy - but I think it COULD be adjusted (tension knobs..) to use thicker thread. I know when I posted pictures of my *new to me* machines - that there was another forum member that has the SAME machine.

Let me root around & see if I can find his name for you. He's had his much longer than I have had mine & would hopefully have better answers for you on whether or not the machine can use the specific type of thread that you're asking about.

My experience is limited, so take it for what it's worth - but are you "repairing frayed seams" or asking what to use to "prevent" fraying seams on canvas? I have a Wilcox & Gibbs 5-thread overlocker & this sucker runs thru 4 layers of canvas like it's quilting cotton..........It's an older machine & I bought it reconditioned. I am pretty sure I won't use it a whole lot in upholstery, but I do in slipcovers.

With respect to your thoughts - it's not having a bad boss - it's getting the work out no matter what

You might be right. I love these discussions. It actually gets me out of my little bubble.

I can't imagine needing to see an instructional video.

OMHeck! I laughed hard at that!

I will probably get flamed for saying this....but I don't see lazy employees as bad employees. I see them as having a bad boss. Bad employees get away with tardiness & laziness & poor productivity because it's tolerated. By whoever is the "boss". Small scale businesses or large scale. there is just no paying some people enough for pride. You either got it or you don't. And I won't say anymore without getting all politcal. but I will say that the bigger a company it is, the harder it is to get shed of the slackers.

My wife, his mom, said he told her that he wouldn't want my job because it's too hard and his hands hurt.

Gene, My husband & I have 2 daughters. My husband is a landfill district manager. We "conditioned" our girls to go to college by paying them $10 an hour (yes cash) to pick up litter. Best college incentive EVER. they were in high school when we did this. Oldest daughter, now a CPA, told my husband that she'd rather earn minimum wage as a cashier at the local seafood restaurant than make $10 picking up litter. Youngest daughter, now an SLP (speech pathologist), told us she'd rather VOLUNTEER at a summer camp for special needs kids than "do what you two do for a living". While we don't pick up litter very often anymore.....I just don't think my children's generation have any desire to work hard physically, no matter what the pay. They are now 27 & 31. And neither one of them get thier hands dirty.

Pressure points don't work for me, more like Ecedrin & coffee to the trick.

A mate of mine covered a few couches in potato sacks, sold a few and actually had a feature article about them in a magizine, those curtains would have gone well with them. He was busy for a while till the novelty wore off.

Nah they still doing THIS! Lot's of DIY'ers doing it on French looking type chairs. Pinterest is covered up with them - Potato sacks is a good analogy - looks more like rough burlap to me. Sure couldn't have it with cats - even declawed ones. What ARE people thinking when they do this type of stuff.....

That type of design feature on curtians would attract dust like flypaper I think!

On another note...I used some webbing to make 2 banners. Cut a bunch of peices about 7" long (as pennants), then cut a little "V" in one end(inverted..), sewed a casing on the other end, threaded the banner peices on ribbon. Instant banner. Sturdy & stands up to rain. Sheds a little bit though. the 2nd one I made I took a sharpie & wrote HAPPY FALL Y'ALL (ala Paula Deen) - the girls in the office liked it!

I sure would like to see photos of this when you get it done. I get at LEAST 2 requests a week with "when are you gonna learn to do car seats..my truck needs one!" Seriously. Heck, I'm just getting started. (and certainly am NOT up to doing truck seats. Not yet)

Sam

PS: I reckon middle TN is not covered up with car upholstery shops.
