I have to say that when doing something of this nature I LOVE my fencing pliers!  They are a hammer, a puller, a wire cutter and are useful for various other operations!   Just add a staple
"loosener" and you have it made.

I bought some brake parts from AutoZone. I got in the car and looked at the receipt. They had sold me some items that I did not ask for and that they did not mention. They just put them in the bag and charged me for them.
I went in to get my money back. They told me that the computer automatically adds items to the receipt and sometimes the clerk forgets to mention it. He certainly remembers to put the items in the bag.

Were the extra parts necessary to install the brakes? 

We bought a power steering pump from AutoZone and we found that the item in the box was used!

I don't know if it would help you any but I use an old steam iron on moderate heat.

I do hope I can get my thoughts across without sounding like a ditz. 
I would think that DIY articles that teach shoddy methods would be written by people that are not masters of the craft!   I personally am not a pro by any means, but I have upholstered car bench seats and motorcycle seats for myself and because I have a bit of common sense the projects came out beautifully.  You folks that are professional upholsterers have much more knowledge about thread, fabric, vinyl etc. than I do and thusly I have to consult with this WONDERFUL website for information.  If someone just starting out trying to recover their motorcycle seat only consult the DIY site that you wrote about on the HogRing, then they are not thinking about the project very well, or they just plain don't care what it looks like.

If I were a professional upholsterer I wouldn't worry too much about the "shoddy DIY" sites.  You know that the work you do is good, accurate and you put your heart into it!

You pros keep up the good work and please keep answering my ignorant questions!!

You can also run the leather through your sewing machine (without thread) so you can get the spacing you want.

I believe the thread that came with my machine is all for fabrics.  I wasn't sure if I could use it for the "cheap" vinyl I'm messing with.    Now I just need to find where to buy the polyester thread.

I am so glad all of you have been discussing this subject!   I have been analyzing thread and needles for the last week and wasn't sure what size to use for my "cheap vinyl".   All I need
to know now is the difference between the different types of thread.   I don't know what to buy
for my indoor or outdoor projects!

Nice ad scarab!  That should get your point across!

I live in N.E. Kansas and have to deal with chiggers about twice a year.   I have found that putting Absorbine Jr. on my tennis shoes and the cuff of my jeans (or on my socks)  it repels the little buggars!   I still get one or two but not many.

I feel good about tools also!   I have a table saw, radial arm, wood lathe, and all the moto tools a body could want!
