Hey Sofa,
Are you near any Canadian borders? I have an overlocker to sell (Yamoto six thread). Sorry no manuals, I aquired it from a retired machine shop owner. Runs like a charm, but I already have a six thread Siruba, so I don't need it.

hi Gregg,
Yes I've had it from new. It's four years old. We have to ship it off Island to get serviced at the place we bought it, so it only goes if it's broke! My husband is pretty diligent at keeping it clean and oiled (unlike me who abuses the crap out of my Sunstar!)

depends how much of a curve it is. If its fairly shallow I would use a backtack strip. If it's quite a deep curve I would make a pattern and cut and sew it on first.

Morning Gregg,

Yeah, sorry it is a DNU 1541! I think I was half asleep last night when I wrote that!
It's been serviced twice in less than two weeks! They both claimed to have fixed the problem. The second time it worked fine for a couple of days, then it went again. My husband was wondering if if it was the needle bar height. Actually I think I know how to adjsut that so I might try it myself - can't do any worse than the 'professionals'!

thanks,
Lynn
Ps I've reset the timing on this so many times, I think I could do it with my eyes closed!

Hi Greg,
It seems you are the sewing machine genius around here! so maybe you can help.
We have a Juki 1571 (my husbands machine). We build a product called a Rockgard(rockgard.com).- just sew the body part. It has webbing straps across the bottom and here is the problem. This machine doesn't like sewing webbing! It strips thread like crazy and my hubby is getting seriously p.o'd. I have had it into two different repair shops now. We have tried bigger needles, smaller needles, Nylon thread, polyester thread (that's the one I need to be using for outside). It seems it's all about the reverse. He can sew straight lines 'till the cows come home, but as soon as it's time to put the webbing on the machine has a hissy fit!
I run a Sunstar KM591BL and it sews the webbing without a hitch. I've considered buying another Sunstar, but they are not made in Korea any more (China now) so I don't know if the quality is the same. Any suggestions?

We just had one of those! The manufacturer sent out replacement foam - same junk as was in there already. I convinced the client to pay for better foam so that he doesn't have to come back in six months.

you find similar sort of heavy plastic fasteners on car seats. I try and reuse the old ones as i have no clue where you would get replacements.

thanks Gene!

That's going to be really helpful. If i secure the position (I'll know in a couple of days), I'll actually be working for an aviation company. I know there is a lot to learn, but I'm really excited to do something different. I'll post as soon as I know!

Looks like we all do it roughly the same way. Piece of typar bottom cloth for a pattern, nice sharp chalk, a small square if I can't get into the back corners, add 1/2'' to all sides - except if its a sofa then only 1/4'' between each cushion or they end up too tight.

General Discussion / Help with leather
June 13, 2011, 06:13:00 pm
Hi Everyone,
I have a question for all of you amazing upholsterers who work with leather. I have done lots of boat seats, cars seats, furniture with vinyl, but very little with leather. Now I have an opportunity to do aircraft seating which is all leather all of the time. They are private planes and small passenger jets. Am I getting in over my head having only a small amount of leather experience under my belt? Or will my general knowledge of boat and car seats be enough?
I plan on doing the Coachtrim course if I get the job.
Thanks in advance,
Lynn

I have just done three boats with Tempostest - the rep gave me a deal to try it out. I like that its a softer hand than Sunbrella. I'd like to see the boats after a season to see if there is any marked diffeence.

Ps I got it from J Ennis fabrics

I put up with pain and pins and needles in my hand for about four months last year - I already have wrecked shoulders so i figured it was related to that. A friend turned me on to a guy who does Sport therapy massage. Brilliant!!! He fixed me in about ten visits. Now I go and see him every three to four weeks. It's not cheap but worth every penny.
My hubby had appendix surgery a couple of years ago and he was out of the shop for about a month. It was really tough to do it all by myself. I know what you mean about feeling guilty letting customers down, but your health is more important.
My best wishes and speedy recoveries to you guys.

Same as RandyR I don't like to leave old window in either.
The only exception is if the customer wants a really quick cheap job.

I forgot about the London course! I was living in Wales when I did my training. I have my Diploma from the Master Upholsterers, although I doubt my membership is current as I've lived in Canada for the last 14 years!
Good luck with your endeavours!
